Hadn't seen what Catchings has been up to lately, so took a quick peek. He started out playing lots of minutes and shooting lots of threes. Not a a particularly good percentage, but he was getting shots up. Now he has been replaced in the starting lineup by Mawot Mag of Rutgers fame. In the last 2 games, he has played just 7 and 9 minutes. in their last game, he got both a flagrant 1 and a tech. Reports that he is didn't even bother taking a shot during pregame shootaround. Just stood there doing nothing.

This dude had no shot here. Had he come, he'd be off the team by now.

Well with Mag, I guess the coach wanted defense. Dude is a decent experienced college basketball player. BYU lucky to have him.

I see Gillis had a nice game for Duke, against Miami.
12 points on 3/4 from three.
Good for him. Unless we play Duke!!

Didn't realize he dropped out of the starting rotation. Doing some reading - coach said he needed more intensity and that is why he switched to Mag.

Hard for a freshman when they hit that wall which it looks like he hit. Got to find ways to stay engaged/active and make those little plays.
He has the physical ability but obviously mentally still immature.

Good point. Didn’t he have some issues similar to this before he left Brownsburg? i don’t think OTE or whatever “league” he went to helped him iron those issues out.

Seemingly came from a good family and has the skills. Can’t let the pressure boil over and cause you to be a problem because you’ll earn more bench time.

If he can’t figure something out, with AJ Dybansta coming next year, he is really going to be fighting for playing time.

Glad Painter said, “ nah, we’re good”, when the young man called back to recommit…

And on the other hand, I’m sort of shocked that he didn’t break this off sooner. Guess talent can blind anyone.

I really do hope the kid figures it out somewhere.

Still a lot of season to go, and a lot of opportunities to improve both physically and mentally. He needs to decide if he will continue working (earning his pay) and fight through it, or give up and squander it.

Catchings had 3 fouls in 7 minutes of action last night. I keep track of boxscores from BYU (Catchings), Colorado State (Morton) and Duke (Gillis). Gillis had his best game last night hitting 4 3's in about 15 minutes off the bench.

Purdue definitely dodged a bullet with Catchings...I was critical of Painter not guaranteeing minutes...but now see Catchings as a disruptive cancer on any team. Until he grows up...he will not play in the NBA.

How is Morton doing?

Looks more and more like a 4 year player. I am sure though with the right coaching, he can be very good..... eventually.

Wonder what happens if his BYU NIL $.......suddenly dries up??

Not a lot of effort given when he's on the court from what I saw earlier in December. He's not quite as fluid in his movement as I expected him to be either. Wasn't putting in effort on the defensive end and he basically looked just like a perimeter shooter never really saw him attempt to take somebody off of the dribble and not sure that he can. I would say that he's going to have to put in a lot more work to ever see the NBA. It's definitely an if not when from all indications that I have.

Yes, that surprised me. Saw he needed a great coach......badly.

I think his NIL dries up and he is in the portal.

I think a great coach can work him into form., but sounds like that might take 2-3 years of maturing mind and body under the right guy.

Totally agree. CMP would've been the best thing for him. Similar to Colvin, but to a lesser extent imo. Myles is getting to where he needs to be and wouldn't be this advanced in most other programs. Catchings needed Paint but wasn't ready. He's likely to realize that hopefully sooner than later.

Has Sleepers done a video on how bad Catchings and BYU are?

They were sure sour on Purdue and singing the BYU hype train in offseason.

Funny how things change.....

IMO he will only be successful if he transfers to a program with a coach like Painter, Izzo, or Underwood. Needs some tough love. Unfortunately he has to want that growth and apparently is far from it.

Yep ....needs an old fashioned hard case.
I think parent's knew this early, why they steered him to CMP to start with.

Looking at the hype he received, I believe he thought he could start as a freshman anywhere and wasn’t really planning on staying in school after his first or second year. Now, he’s not starting or playing a featured role.

I hope he at least hits the books this semester because he has no chance of being drafted. Many players forget they also have to be academically eligible to play and there are only so many easy courses you can take.

It must be frustrating to be a super hyped player. Watching someone else take your spot.

Just curious. Is he playing the 3 or the 4? When he left Purdue, I had speculated one of the reasons he left was because he wanted to play the 3, and Painter always uses a guard to play that spot.

I wish him well.

Sounds like he'd be a perfect transfer for Indinia next year.

You think him or any of the other majority of guys are hitting the books hard with all this NIL money and ability to transfer wherever? Oh you sweet child.

Also, he still is in mocks to be drafted. Always was a late first rounder but in second round now. He could come back here 😏

There's no perfection in figuring out people. You're going to miss sometimes. Whether they are high school or portal.

Hard to see him staying as BYU even if he's not drafted.

Oh he’s for sure gone to another school after this year. Especially with them bringing in the projected overall number 1 pick for next years draft where the offense will be focused on Dybansta.

The trouble with these kids is that everyone, coaches, fans, family, etc., is telling them that they have too much sauce. The trouble is that there are only a very select few kids that do have that sauce.
But that can be said for just about every top 100 recruit in the nation. For the most part, they've been the best player on the floor their entire life, been told how great they are, etc, etc. Having the right guidance when you're growing up is really important and realizing that eventually, everyone on the floor at this level is talented.

True....based on these weird decisions he has made in his career thus far, wouldn't surprise me seeing him try the draft and end up in Europe or going to the portal and being a kid who has 4 schools in 4 years type.
IMO, he has a better shot at making an NBA team than Euro league. That league is made up of the hardest working men and every play is contested. Clearly not his game. China maybe?

Haha. You’re probably right.

Sad to see all that potential wasted because you haven’t had a coach who pushes you and rides you when you’re out of line.

It’s not odd at all that this turned out OK for us and maybe not so much for him.

We found a way to be successful and he seemingly found a way to continue to squander good opportunities - nothing new for either side here.
