Fire Self

Kessel / boilerwizard is back

Yeah crap, I just saw he joined last week and has 30 or so posts. Combine that with him using nothing but hyperbole, name calling and lacking a coherent argument and I get to add another to ignore. I'm ok with folks like BBG who can make a coherent argument on why they like CMP. But I don't have the time or patience for this kind of non-sense.

I wasn't comparing any coaches, hence why I said both thread series are ridiculous for different reasons.

I will say this, there is a bit of hypocrisy in both types of threads. Which is probably the only thing they both have in common.

Many still want to compare coaches and say they are apples to apples. Ridiculous for different reasons, I can respect that. Painter = Self... I don't respect that.

More like you can't refute anything I said, so you tuck tail and run. Gee, who didn't see that coming. Myself and others have used facts that you simply choose to ignore just so you can continue on your emotional tirade. No surprise that you aren't man enough to just admit you were wrong.

I so enjoy being right as much as I am.

Yes. It was at the end of his contract and he had only 1 NCAA tournament and 2 NIT tournaments in his last 5 years as well as a 31-49 conference record over his last 5 seasons if I'm not mistaken. He was also closing in on 70 years old.
How did you know that it wasn't just a brief lull in his coaching or perhaps his players were letting him down? He had accomplished some good things in the big 10 to that point. It could have been considered a risky to hire Painter when they did. Didn't he only have 1 successful year at a mid major under his belt? ...There are some valid points on both sides of the argument....But Purdue fans have a right to be critical at this point. I think firing Painter this year would not be the best decision. But he needs to improve the guard play in the next 2 years and keep the team trending in the right direction IMO to be considered for a contract extension. I don't think that's an unreasonable expectation.

Oh no I agree those are equally as silly. Now comparing losing leads and such, okay I can see where that comes from. However, I don't see how pointing it out over and over helps anything.

Oh and to be clear, it isn't that I "like" CMP per se (I think I have used that twice now, new record) ... more that I am "indifferent".... or "undecided". He has until the end of his contract to win my vote just simply because he isn't going anywhere unless he quits. And speaking of, if that were to happen .. I would let him leave this time. Not because I dislike him, but to me it's the same as if one of my employees tried it. You took care of them once and they still want more which means they aren't happy where they are at and bumping them again is just a band-aid until something better comes along. Happens all the time in IT land ....

I think when a coach has been somewhere 20+ years and been as successful as Keady was at Purdue and then hits a bad 5-year stretch as he approaches 70, the chances of a recovery are less. As far as Painter being chosen to replace Keady, you could certainly view that as a risky choice at the time but you weren't exactly handing him the keys to the penthouse at that point either. They had to find someone and they hired a former Purdue player who had some degree of success at the mid-major level. It's not like we were replacing a coach that was delivering consistent top 25 season at that point. All things considered I think it has proven to be a very good hire.

I don't disagree with your specific criticisms regarding our guards. IMO, we went into the season hoping for competent guard play and I believe we got it most of the time. The exceptions are mostly the games that we lost. What we didn't have this year are guards that make plays and create offense and you're right that we need to improve in that area if we hope to go bigger and better places.
