Minutes thru 2 exhibition games:
Eifert 26
Wheeler 14
Ewing 9

This seems to speak volumes for the role Grady is expected to play on this year's team. There is no reason to be giving him exhibition minutes over the new guys unless you are planning to use him.

He also led the team in rebounds last night. If he can give the team 8-10 minutes a game and get 2-4 points with 5-7 rebounds, that’s a big plus. CMP defaults to what he knows he can get rather than what he hopes he can get. Grady is going to probably play harder than any one else on the court and will make plays happen because of it.

Having Grady ahead of Ewing and Wheeler is a great practice and teaching tool for those two. They have a guy who because of his incredibly hard work and dedication has put himself in a position to be a contributor of a top 25 team. If you don’t think how hard Grady works and plays isn’t going to rub off on those guys because they see they are going to have to go as hard or harder to get his minutes. It may not show until later this season or next year, but it’s an incredible opportunity for CMP to help develop two very talented players.

Love the aggressiveness of Haas. No reason he shouldn't do that all season as with a solid backup behind him, he can be a lot more free I would think because him fouling out is less of a dramatic drop when you have another 7 footer to come in.

The biggest deficiency on this team may be defensive rebounding, so Grady grabbing 7 boards in 12 minutes is a strong argument for playing time.

No doubt, but with Haarms making a case to backup the 5, I wonder if Taylor will take Grady’s minutes at the 4 when he returns.

Possibly. Seems to me that Haarms might be better suited to playing the 4 alongside Haas or Taylor given his skill-set and ability to guard smaller players on the perimeter.

Three games watching Haarms and I'm already having a hard time managing my expectations. If players were stocks - buy, buy, buy!

Awesome post JDB. Explains the Grady situation well.

Not sure whether it means the two new guys need somebody to show them what effort and hard work look like in a game or they are simply behind schedule to contribute this year. I would think they would be given as much run as possible in exhibition games if there was any chance they would be expected to contribute meaningful minutes in a real game. Effort and hard work can be modeled in practice. There are only 3 exhibition games to prepare for the season. That those minutes are going to Eifert instead probably says something about all 3 of them. I do wonder if JT stays healthy does Painter end up shirting both Sasha and Wheeler. Of course I could always be reading the tea leaves incorrectly..

Eifert is not a typical former walk-on in that he has a great frame and solid athleticism to go with a terrific motor. Wheeler or Ewing is going to have to earn it to move ahead of him.

I have not posted in quite some time. Now that the start of the season is a week away, thought I would share some thoughts on my expectations for the 2017-18 season. After watching the WUG games this summer and 3 exhibitions, I believe that Purdue will take a step backwards if they insist on going with "experience" or "hard workers" rather than taking advantage of the new guys' (Ewing and Wheeler) superior athleticism and basketball skillset. With the current rotation of starters and substitutions, there is not much to worry about if you are Villanova, Louisville, or Arizona (which are long, skilled and athletic teams). While I am sure Eifert is a scrappy player, if he becomes the primary substitution for Vince the entire year, Purdue will be in trouble. Personally, I believe one of the new guys will grab Eifert's minutes -- once it becomes clear that Eifert's ceiling is Wheeler and Ewing's floor.
