Ah...another one of these "only coaches who make it to a Final Four are successful" arguments.
Let's break this down: 351 D-1 men's basketball team. 4 spots in the Final Four. Based on your logic, 347 coaches each year had a failed season, an unsuccessful season.
Now I know you don't believe that. So what you're really doing is applying an unfair standard to Purdue's current head coach...arbitrarily. While many other coaches won't make it to the Final Four this year and yet will have had a successful season, Painter MUST get to a Final Four OR he is a failure.

Putting us in a position to do well in a post-season single-elimination tournament year in and year out is my definition of success. It's called March Madness for a reason...requiring a Final Four berth is a bit much. Let's not talk about final 4, because this standard may be too far out of reach from some of your small minds. What about elite 8? Can you at least get to elite 8 in 11 years? My father in law has a 2015 with the eco boost six. I've driven it and it has plenty of power for typical truck use up to towing a boat. Might not drag a big fifth wheel with it though. Plenty of power for everyday use.
I don't tow anything.
I drive in town, gas mileage sux.
13-14 mpg in town, 20+ on the highway.
Not a real big deal for me because I don't even drive 10,000 per year.

He is defending our coach from our own fans. Good for him. If you are looking to run off the coach, don't expect those that appreciate our coach to remain silent about it. You absolutely should be mocked and shamed when some of the ridiculous criticisms here are shown to be without merit.
I can appreciate defending the coach for sure. Mocking and shaming people the way it has been done on here keeps this board super trashy so I don't agree with that method.
I want coach Painter to be successful. I want him to win during the season AND most importantly in the tournament. I also want to win a championship (so the IU fans have nothing to talk about). I want to win that title with Painter. But if he ain't the guy that can do it then I don't want him here. His regular season resume is stellar. His tournament resume is suspect.

You only see it as "instigating" because you don't like the coach. For those of us that do, the notion of extending the coach isn't provocative at all. If you get offended because a fan likes the coach, the problem might be with you.

You guys have said forever that we Painter complainers can whine all we want; Painter ain't gonna be fired. And you're right, but now there's a new sheriff in town, and especially after the fiasco that is the woman's program after she got an extension: I got news for you Painter ain't getting an extension until he does something, something real (an elite eight, at least). And if he doesn't and soon, I am staying with my prediction, Painter will be out of here by 2021.

If Painter continues to field a top 20 team, shows progress and has even marginal success in the tourney, he will keep getting extensions. No AD will fire a coach that has any of that going on, well, IMO anyway.
I won't say he could never be fired but I will say that he's not even close right now and if he has seasons like this through the next few years he will get another extension.
this is a no-win argument you know. At some point in the NCAA's we are going to lose. At least being a top 15 team, means sweet sixteen. This is a good team, but few of us believe it is an FF team - meaning top 4 team. So at some point, you will proudly announce you were right, and the rest of us are wrong, because we Painter "can't win the big game". If we had a top 4 team, and he didn't make the FF, then you might have an argument. As it stands now, you are just telling all of us the glass is half-empty, and are just provoking controversy.

I won't predict on if and when Painter gets an extension or canned. But, I can tell you that if he continues to get bounced in the first round, "He gone". You can look "pretty" all season long, but the tourney is really where coaches are measured. I really don't care if Painter is fired or not right now. But, I can tell you, that if he takes another first round loss? I'm in the "Fire Painter" crowd. All this talk about Biggie and POY and how awesome Painter has done...to then excuse an early exit is hypocritical. This board if full of folks who just don't settle, and some who'd settle for anything...then some in the middle like me. I'm not going to get high or low right now. I'll call a bad loss a bad loss. I'll call a good win a good win. Some of y'all just don't have the capacity to do that.

In 21 seasons, he has 1 National Championship, 7 final fours, 7 Big Ten Championships, 19 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, 72% overall winning percentage, 69% winning percentage in the Big Ten.
I don't like him winning recruits over us or his sideline antics as much as anybody, but when you look at his whole body of work, I think you can easily consider him great, and not just because "of some screwed up reason that we celebrate 4th place in college basketball".

His 7 final fours are his claim to fame. Only 4 coaches have ever been to more, one of which only won it all only twice in 11 trips. His overall body of work is indicative of a great coach. Even though I don't like the guy, I'm not too biased to give him his credit for what he has done over the past 21 seasons.
Not claiming he sucks but I see a huge gap between him and Coach K. Not close to the same level. If K is great, Izzo is less than that.
What do you know about people's personal lives on here? So why even add that to the discussion?
Being the VP of an IT company or being unemployed doesn't really affect the way I view the Purdue basketball program.
I am OK with Painter as the coach but he's on a short leash with me because of his lack of success in the tournament lately when having good teams. But according to some here my "opinion" is wrong so that's why I call people out for their BS on here.
Every fan I've ever known in person that spouts off like that has had similar characteristics.
Again, you then I expect will "call out" people of the fire Painter schtick or you're a hypocrite.
I'm "wrong" too then as that is my opinion for the most part. Personally I don't really care what Painter has done in the past (non-recent past that is) because that is the past. We start focusing too much on things that happened 6 years or so ago and we start to look like those IU subway alumns that yell "WE HAVE BANNERS" as you laugh at them in the drive-thru.
What I expect is Painter to consistently make the tourney and make it out of the first round. Another first round exit this year and I will shorten the leash myself with next year being the make or break year for me. Also I want to see him continue to change and adapt and I think this year is the most we have seen that from him. Which is why I think he is above average and not needing of firing. I mean if we hire a coach that does the same thing or worse then what do we gain? As we have learned with the football program and the hiring process here recently, we aren't going to have our pick of coaches. We just aren't. Brad Stevens is not going to come through those doors so that means we have to take a chance on someone. Great way to kill a program like ours is to become a revolving door of coaches.
And finally while I think this year's team is very talented, I do not think it's a Final Four type team. Sweet 16 maybe elite 8, yes just like mathboy said but I actually think our veteran team plus the additions coming in make us an even more deadly team next season. Simply because the type of team we will be I think will be vastly different, in a good way, than what we see this year.
All of that is just my 2 cents.
