Expectations for 2019

Purdue wasn’t keeping him without a raise. I am assuming there will be a bump in assistants pay as well.

Think about it this way. It will still be cheaper per win than Hazel.

I was one that thought he was going to Louisville. Obviously I whiffed about as bad as one can on that.

With the view of hindsight, I think he was going to stay at Purdue as long as they at least matched what Louisville offered. He's been crushing it on the recruiting trail and got some good momentum with the OSU win.

I think 85% of knuckleheads thought he was Louisville bound. Me included

8 wins next year and then competing for the West title the next 3 years. Coach has had ES, Plummer, and Sipe long enough for me to not have any worries about the QB position.

What football record do you expect, assuming Brohm is indeed making $6M per year?

He had a Top 25 recruiting class for next year even when he was 'only' making $3.8MM. Don't think that changes all of a sudden now? What kind of record you think U of L will have next year? ;)

Would have been helpful to include the 2019 schedule plus the records of those teams from 2018:
@ Nevada (7-5): W
Vandy (6-6): W
TCU (6-6): W
Minnesota (6-6): W
@ Penn State (9-3): L
Maryland (5-7): W
@ Iowa (8-4): L (Toss Up)
Illinois (4-8): W
Nebraska (4-8): L (Toss Up)
@ Northwestern (8-4): W
@ Wisconsin (7-5): L
Indiana (5-7): W
------------------------------------
Total: 8-4 (real chance at 10-2 IMO)

Key is that Purdue only faces two teams with more than 8 wins but will face 8 teams that are bowl eligible this season.
I like your predictions, Johnny. But I have to ask you about NW. I think they will lose their QB, next year. Is that the main reason you're predicting a road win for us, or are there other factors. Just curious. Call me gullible, but I actually think we can beat Wisc., on the road. And I'm really happy that we don't play either Michigan, MSU, or OSU.

I am thinking 27 wins next year and maybe 30 the year after.

Minnesota beat us like we were West Lafayette high school
Why are people here still sucking Nebraska off? Who did they beat in their FOUR wins. When I see you picking them I’m betting you were one of the 75% of KHs who thought they’d be 8-4 not 4-8.

Also, I have a number of key questions regarding WHO we will be.

1. Do we replace the interior OL like we replaced 5/7 of our front seven? If so we could start 0-4. Particular if...
2. In addition to replacing interior poorly, we get 2018 Sindelar not 2017 Sindelar.. if it’s Sindelar. Brohm can be Bill Belicheck and if we are replacing Sindelar four games in, get ready for another clunker where we scramble for bowl eligibility.
3. Running back? Forget about Richie worship or Horvath being majority carry guys in this league. So, who then... ? Fuller? Hasn’t stayed on the field hardly at all. Evan Anderson? If Fuller simply is Fuller you’re either looking to Anderson or depending on Hewitt or Doerue as true freshmen.
4. Who plays Higgins DE spot. If it’s Higgins we get ZERO pass rush from that side. Is it gonna be Hunter on day one. Hunter looked bigger than Karlaftis in that group pic. Is he even a WDE. If he’s not I cringe for that position. Branson Deen would need to step up huge.
5. Will Mackey step up and not be the kind of corner like Cason and Blackmon who is self checked and needs to give a 9 yard cushion. If not, who opposite major
6. Jake being out was sobering. Watching a young Trice try to play a position that requires that kind of mental aptitude was sobering. Is it Brennan who steps in for Jake? Grant as a true fresh? Doubt it. Ball? Smiley?

Other than that yes the rest of this team that returns next year is an 8-4 team...

Looking at the schedule along with the roster: 6-8 wins.

Really nervous about replacing the three interior OL.

OL, DL, and Secondary will be the huge questions. If there are any transfers and schollys open up, it would be nice to grab a couple grad transfers to plug and play.

Some DL and Secondary talent coming in, but will they be ready to play as true frosh? And if so will the expectations be fair for year one?

DL should be ok, assuming Neal recovers from ACL. Each player returns with an additional year in the weight program, six freshmen coming off redshirt seasons and adding four more true freshmen.

1) the OL will have Stickford, Beach, McKenna, Washington to fill the gaps.

2) Sindelar (or Sipe or Plummer) is likely going to have Moore, Wright, Bell, Taylor, EB to throw the ball to. A tone of size and Moore for speed. He gets it out, they go get it.

3) IU just had a ton of success with a 3 star true freshman. King will be very good and could start. I admit that I am not high on the current RBs so the freshman will have to step up, but seem up to the challenge.

4) GK and Geo will likely start at DE. Geo showed flashes and will be even better when GK is on the other side. Can’t wait to see the improved DL play just by adding GK. And that doesn’t even include the incoming 4 star DT that could see time next year.

5) If you increase your passion rush, the DBs don’t get left on an island as much. Mackey will be good and Majors showed he could hang. The incoming freshman CBs will be amazing with size and athleticism, pretty sure Brohm would want them to redshirt at that position though.

6) Graham and Grant are both very very promising. My guess is that Grant starts at some point. BT showed some promise too. Trice will get it eventually, but JT leads that defense and it needed it because of the overall lack of talent. Defense overall should be much better.

1) none of those players have proven anything. The only time beach got in the game he got knocked on his ass on an extra point.

2) Sindelar has not shown touch or the ability to hit receivers on short routes in stride yet. The other two have proven 0.

3) IU was decent up front in the run game. See 1.

4) IF Reviere is starting look out. He’s got no burst rushing the passer. Besides, GK will play SSDE.

5) Major has proven he will be good. Mackey has not. The freshmen have not.

6) BT looked awful when he became the guy. It’s one of the most mentally intensive positions on the team. Thus trice looking confused.

Look, I’m not saying we won’t have an answer to these questions by game 6... or won’t look like we are beginning to have an answer by game 4... but look at this year. Yeah by game 6 Cornel Jones and Anthony Watts has proven that they were players. But for three games, we had two guys who could play up front. For the back half of the season, we still only had four players who could play. Higgins, Reviere and Barnes (lb) are not big ten caliber players at their current positions. Which reminds me... pursuant to #4, if Barnes adds 20 lbs. without losing speed, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him start the season at WDE as the starter at all. If he did so competently that would answer #4.

These are all legit questions. I’m not saying this staff and these players can’t answer them. But if they don’t answer some until game 4, and fail to answer some entirely.. and we end up starting 1-2 and finishing 7-5, I won’t be shocked at all.

In 2020 I think we go buck wild

We need to replace nearly the Entire starting o-line & lose several of the back-ups as well. Depending on how quickly they jell & how they perform, anywhere from 6-9 wins next year...

We asked all of those questions for the last two years and everybody stepped up. Have a chance at two back to back winning seasons which hasn’t happened in forever. You want to be a negative Nancy, go ahead. But you will be in the minority. The last two recruiting classes where better than anything Hazel brought in. 7 wins should be the minimum. This year’s schedule was really difficult and with probably the least amount of overall talent in the last four years. The ‘19 class has difference makers coming in and should benefit from the ‘18 class getting a year under their belt. I’m excited and until otherwise shown, I expect them to be much improved. They will have a pass rush and return a lot of the key pieces on defense. OL and RB are the biggest questions for me, but the OL coming in are almost all higher rated than what was there this year. King should be a monster. If the OL is even half way competent, adding in all the weapons in the passing game, King should go off.

We asked those specific questions last year and this year? The past couple years we had Thieneman, so how did we ask that question? This year has a different set of legitimate questions, as every year does.

This year we asked way more questions than we will next year. The questions we asked will “who will play x position”. “How will the x group do?” “Who will step up?”.

Last year people questioned who the QB would be and how they would do. Blough answered and then some. People were asking who would step up at WR, and Moore exceeded his high expectations and Wright and Zico stepped up big time. We had major Dline and pass rush questions, which weren’t really answered, but help is on the way for next year. We asked about who would step up at DB, and Majors really impressed and Blackmon did a good job in the red zone. None of these questions are new. The only difference is last year we didn’t ask about RB or OL (well, some did, but most thought it would be improved). But those questions are traded out by answering the WR, pass rush, DL questions. OL has some pieces that have been around and were higher rated than what they are replacing. Wouldn’t expect it to be a big step back, although they had a lot of experience. RB got a ton of success out of low three star guys that had early success wth bad OL. Again, if you want to worry, go ahead. It will be a waste of time though. Next years team will be much better with an easier schedule. So take some advice from Aaron’s Rodgers and R-E-L-A-X. Next year will be fun and 2020 is the year they should really start to shine.

You can say there are fewer questions this year and that’s fine, but these are the questions. Would i be surprised if these coaches answered them all? No.

I predicted 6-6 this year .. guess what

I guessed 7-6 again even with a more difficult schedule. Purdue was only a few plays away from exceeding that.

I guessed 7-6 again even with a more difficult schedule. Purdue was only a few plays away from exceeding that.

Of course, but you can say that about so many seasons.

Look, this isn’t specific to Brohm, year two and year three under a new coach are often when seniors have the least talent, because recruiting got successively worse under the previous bad coach.

Here are your projected senior starters this coming year:

RT McCann
QB Sindelar
RB Fuller (if healthy)
TE Hopkins
LB Bailey
DT Neal
S Mosley
LG Mendez (potentially)

Good right?? I mean that’s 3 big time playmakers, three more guys in Sindelar, McCann and Mosley who have shown flashes/can be big time seniors .. another guy in Fuller who just needs to stay healthy and then Mendez, who I’ve seen play a little and who doesn’t look like a starter at this level.

Problem. That’s 8 guys! Now, you may think I’m being a downer by saying that. What I’m actually saying is that in 2021 and beyond, you’ll see a lot more than 6 senior playmakers out there doing consistent work.

Next years team is going to have a LOT of freshman and sophomore starters! A lot man...

Let me just take an amateur shot at starters based on who we have committed now. And I’ll be upper class charitable:

QB Sindelar Sr.
HB Fuller Sr.
TE Hopkins Sr.
WR Moore So.
WR Rice Fr.
WR Wright Fr.
LT Hermanns Jr.
LG Mendez Sr.
C Beach So.
RG McCann Sr.
RT Washington So.

DE Barnes Jr.
DT Watts Jr.
DT Neal Sr.
DE Karlaftis Fr.
LB Bailey Sr.
LB Jones Jr.
LB Alexander So.
CB Major So.
S Mosley Sr.
S Thieneman Jr.
CB Mackey So.

Seniors - 8
Juniors - 5
Sophomores - 6
Freshman - 3

And that’s one of the more upperclassman heavy starting lineups one can suggest

Don't forget about Hopkins as another recieving weapon next year either. He's forgotten often and should keep getting better.

Indiana (5-7): W
------------------------------------

I see us winning at Nebraska. Iowa will be gunning for us like no other team.

Don't sleep on Horvath. Looked good in limited action and I don't know why he can't get a healthy amount of carriers next year.
