Edey

It’s what happens when your coach only plays you half the game
It doesn't help. But he seems to be in a good spot with supportive teammates. He could still make a push for ROY. And if you want to know how open the ROY race is, Kel'el Ware is the betting favorite to win it now. There are about 5 or so dudes in the running. Probably the closest ROY race in years.

Kel'el has played well in the last few games, and I think better than he did at any point in college. He is a good reason Indiana should fire their coach, even though he is good at bringing in talent.

Woody definitely should have been fired after last year but his buddies got him another year.

As for Miami, Spo finally figured out to play him and Bam together.

Just 2 or 3 weeks ago, Edey was the favorite to win. It'll likely come down to who stays healthy and gets mins. Do you think having a key role on a playoff team plays into it vs a guy getting mins on a terrible team? No idea if that factors in in the end or not...

For ROY? I don't think it means a whole lot to the voters. Might matter if they are splitting hairs.

Ja Morant back in the line-up tonight, and Memphis takes down San Antonio for the third time this season.

Big Maple with 16 and 14 with three steals in a +25 effort in an efficient 25 minutes. ZE had 14 and 11 in 19 minutes on Sunday in Milwaukee. Grizzlies are going to be a tough out in the West along with Oklahoma City and Houston - some new young teams in the mix.

Why do they not play him more?!

Candidly, I think they're still figuring it out. He definitely gets utilized better with Ja Morant - the foul trouble doesn't seem to be aa much of an issue any more. He played 25 tonight, and his season high is 28 minutes. Think about 32 would be optimal range.

They've also been working him back through some injuries.

I watched a good part of the game in Milwaukee - it's still a struggle for me to watch more than 5 minutes straight of NBA action at a time, but I do like the way Memphis can play compared to some other squads. Bucks were just jacking most of the game (20-45 from deep is pretty decent though), and when they were hot, they would surge, but the lead dissipated quickly on multiple occasions - Memphis had 107 FG attempts and dominated the glass.

What everyone else said, plus IMO their team is already so loaded so there’s no pressure to bring along the new guy quickly when that would just raise his market value at a time when you’ve already got too many star players to carry on one roster.

With high production per minute played, I suspect the Grizz want to first lock up some of their other players but must be counting on Edey being a big part of their longer-term plan too.

The other thing is he’s been picked on a lot. Not just with Draymond Green, who tried to twist his ankle on the ground and antagonize him in multiple games after that, but similar things have been happening all season when he’s been in the game. If you didn’t see Drew Eubanks’ running hockey check into his shoulder about a week ago, it’s worth looking up. Nobody is worried about Zack Edey losing a fair fight, and I don’t think he has a reputation of being the aggressor in any of these situations, but people are messing with him (IMHO) out of fear that he could end up creating a movement of talented, big men that change the league. If you’re a 6’ 8-10” NBA player who plays Center or PF, you don’t wanna see basketball taken back to the era of dominant bigs.

Yeah I’ve seen guys trying to go at him and “test” him. And he doesn’t back down…Eubanks back tracked pretty quick after he barely moved Zach after running full steam ahead into him.

It’s just odd he doesn’t play much in the 4th Q it seems. But maybe they’re saving him more for the playoff run. I don’t watch much nba, but rooting for the guy of course! He continues to prove doubters wrong.

I said when drafted, Memphis was a good situation for Edey. He has performed very close to expectations. He has endured several different unusual injuries this year. He seems to play well with Morant in the lineup. I expect him to play more when fully healthy.

A question I have. Is a season of 12 ppg and 8 rebounds Going to win a ROY? I see it as being a very successful season. Unlike Purdue, I see Edey filling a supporting role for Memphis. I good comparison would be The Bucks center Lopez. He allows Giannis to do his thing. Edey allows JJJ to do his thing.

I expect EDEY to continue to improve in the NBA and become a force. But I don’t expect playing for Memphis that he will rise to become an all star or the featured player.

That would be fine. Only one Painter recruit ( Moore) has had a sustained NBA career. Ivey should be the second. So Edey being a 10-12 yeqr starter / role player would be a plus for the program.

Lots of good answers, also the NBA is much more fast paced game. I am guessing they are giving him shorter periods so he can give max effort on defense. Its not that Zach isnt in shape, its just that modern basketball is a running game and Zach is a 7'4 giant that can only give max effort for so long.

The backup center (Huff) has been very good in his limited minutes. And mostly, the defacto 4 (Jaren Jackson) is actually much more of a matchup issue for defenses when he's playing 5. Immensely athletic he doesn't have "go to" moves, instead relying on his speed and power to get past bigger, slower centers. (he's the antithesis of Zach)
Avg 23+ and 7 boards. AND the young 4's (Laravia and Wells) are playing very well when Jackson is at 5.
Young team with talent stacked up and down the lineup.
Much more what the other guys are doing right than it is anything Zach doing wrong.

Memphis is really stacked. Bane and Morant have missed considerable time and yet they still keep winning.
Morant barely shoots some games, and they still win. He used to have to have a career night to get a W.
I always thought he was a talented chucker but he now seems pretty content being the "back ground star" and letting other guys make plays. He's a pretty fine passer too, which I hadn't seen. He's impressed me with his non scoring skills and his (on the surface) temperament. It's a real nice come back for him. Kudos.
