I figured when Fife left MSU last year it was a signal that Stephens was likely to be Fizzo's successor. He still could be, I suppose, and perhaps MSU would be reluctant to hire a first-time HC to replace Fiz, but if Stephens fails to do anything at WMU, it would seem like a mistake. They are generally not a good program and he may struggle to have the kind of success that would look attractive to MSU when the time comes.
