Duke looked like…

About the Flagg "foul", it wasn't "over the back". Flagg was going for the rebound, #13 for Houston was holding Flagg at the hips. Holding is not blocking out. When the whistle blew, #13 for Houston went straight to the Ref to plead his case because of it. Watch at 20:13

A team without a true point guard. Against Houston, you really need that distributor. Still almost beat them on overwhelming talent but if they had a good pg, probably pretty easily.

They were holding our players during our game with them too.

We have actually played Houston as well as anyone in this tournament. It could have been us playing again in the NC game.

Unpopular opinion, but I don’t feel bad for Mason at all. He had the chance to be a key factor in the Houston game, yet chose to leave for Duke. In fact, his misstep seemed to trigger Houston's entire rally (?)

I understand it gave our underclassmen more playing time, but still.

screw Duke glad they lost. Tired of the Flagg talk as best since Lebron, And all the talk of how great of coach Scheyer is, Scheyer did not have good game and team looked like it was not prepared to play in end of game situations.
Dont you know that top-rated 5-star players make you a "great coach". (sarcasm intended)

1. make your FT's don't leave it in the refs hands.
2. ref was already making his call, pleading had nothing to do with anything. And everyone pleads their case.
3. even if we allow that it was a bad call, Duke is still 8,523 calls ahead in their favor the last 40 years so boohoo to them.
4. no love for Cellvin but it still makes me so happy to see duke lose.

Flagg is the real deal tho. Absolutely sensational for a recently turned 18 year old. Impacts so much on both sides of the ball.

Crazy that Scheyer didn’t draw something up to get a good FT shooter to the line. Or at least take proctor out at 68%. I guess he WAS 3/4. But nerves got the best of him.
Def Bad call on Flagg. What’s crazy is the guy “boxing out” flagg is 6 years old than him 😂 😂

Glad Mason went farther with us than the Dookies!

Feel a little bad for Mason. Call on Flagg was a bad one. Leaving Proctor in at that crucial time was a bad idea. He was by far the worst Duke FT shooter on the floor. Will be interesting to see if Flagg leaves for the NBA, I suspect he will.

Both games yesterday were exhibits of the poor officiating the NCAA allows. Muggings each game both ways.
They really let them play. Really physical ,nothing dirty but a lot of banging. Don’t watch the NBA but is this common with the pros ?

From the parts I saw, Auburn got the more favorable whistle.....that game, though was a war of physicality - Broome seemed frustrated, and I think Florida eventually wore them down.

Surprised on the rebounding call that gave Houston the lead.....but we all know how that goes.....if you let it come down to where a missed call/no call might make the difference either way......you are at the mercy of the officials who are consistently inconsistent.

The bad part is that "refs" many times hold on to an idea that they don't want to be the decider of an outcome. Good for them, nobody wants that. However, not making a call and swallowing the whistle is in fact being a decider of a game. A call or no call always affects the game

Yes, TJ - implying that a missed "call"/no call - generally they seem to lean with "swallowing the whistle" as you put it.....we saw that recently, too. I've always like it when they make a determination of whether or not a player got an advantage or was at a disadvantage because of contact, etc. - not all contact should be a foul.

I'll throw a bone to the officials, which I usually don't - but it is more difficult now with the way the game is played in three areas helping the offense - the way screening is allowed, flexibility for dribbling/carrying/discontinuation, and the extra steps allowed eliminating travels. I'm also going to agree with Vitale (gulp!)......with the way the game is called, I'd also lobby for a 6th foul before disqualification - or allow a player to remain in the game, but a 6th foul would result in a two-shot technical and possession.

Dont get me wrong, I love seeing Dook lose. And yes, so many missed free throws. But the point im making still is a valid one.

Plus, he wasnt "boxing out". He was grabbing Flaggs shorts with both hands.

It is a no win situation and with three refs instead of two you have smaller areas of the court to watch, but then increase the variability of the refs opinion 50%. While we are at it...just give the ball to the visiting team to start the game and quit pretending they can still throw the ball up...which can be more of a factor in OT. Just rotate possessions the whole game.

I hate that they have taken the jump ball out of the skill/strategy of the game - agree.....why even start the game or OT with it......plus, they never call "stealing" the tip any more either. It's not that hard for officials IF you practice how to toss it AND enforce a player taking it early......

I agree that Auburn got some good calls. Duke did too, until the last one.

they don't practice it because it happens so rarely...so do away with it as I stated. When you and I were young, teaching the jump ball was an important part of the game...and it happened at all three areas of the court. You team would be on the defensive, offensive and neutral circle several times a game.

Who was responsible for bringing the peach baskets and the ladder? :)

Also, Houston was going to get possession. Ball went right to Cryer. No telling what would have happened but then a mediocre FT shooter made 2.

I hear you - at that point, Duke had lost control of the game and could have gone either way. Roberts made the two FT's then defended Flagg well on the next possession. Houston also didn't foul down six after the technical FT - gave up 30 seconds but got a stop/possession.

They got two stops, a turnover (and put-back off a possession), and a missed front-end to shut out Duke in the last minute plus - credit them for the discipline not to panic and ground out the last bits of a comeback.

Putting a lot of stuff aside, Sampson damn well knows the game and gets his players to be tough and play that way.

bogus call but no grabbing,
About the Flagg "foul", it wasn't "over the back". Flagg was going for the rebound, #13 for Houston was holding Flagg at the hips. Holding is not blocking out. When the whistle blew, #13 for Houston went straight to the Ref to plead his case because of it. Watch at 20:13
