Just was looking at the box score from the ND game and watched the Louisville and Villanova game and all of these games had the same thing in common…. Mathis does not perform well in big games when he has any kind of a athlete guarding him. In the Signature Games this year he has 3,5,5, points. Hell reading some articles and to thought we are ready to retire his number. Just remember watching him in last years NCAA game where he was on the bench because he couldn't stay up with the athletes on the floor. I know we have a short bench but we need to limit his minutes and try to find anyone we can develop who can play D and not going to let you down on the offensive end. I know he 'll have some great games against northwestern and Penn state but he needs to bust his butt on the defensive end to contribute to this team. His offense will not be something we will be able to hang our hat on .

Wow… that is all I can say… is Wow.

let me say that when he got a board and pushed it up the court I could see immediately that he was going to set Cline up for a three which he did and Cline hit for the go ahead basket. then later on top he made a great pass fake and hit Biggie for a crucial basket underneath. Dakota has a GREAT understanding of the game and is Purdue's best passer. That is not to say that he doesn't have weaknesses, but he affects the game when not scoring.

I thought Dakota was solid today. Moved the ball well. 5 assists, no turnovers, a steal. His shot wasn't falling but still, the 2 shots he hit, especially the 2nd was critical. I can't think of who else on the team deserves his minutes.
6 or 7 rebounds too I believe

That was awesome. Doubt he ever leaves the starting line up.

Cliz and CMP also gave Mathias the lion's share of the credit for defense on Vasturia (1-8 for 3 pts. versus 16.6 pt. season avg.) in the post-game radio interview.

More to basketball than just scoring. He's consistent and key to our ball movement on offense.
indeed he may struggle to get his own shot against more athletic teams, he is still like oil that greases our offense and makes it work smoother. His threat as a shooter also helps spacing. He is a fundamentally sound basket player with limited athleticism, excellent passing and improved defense this year. Overall a huge plus to our starting line-up.

But isn't he supposed to be one of our go to scorers, maybe i should have clarified that. We need him to score in big games like all shooters are supposed to, he just doesn't answer the bell in situations where he is being guarded by a athletic kid (see ND, villanova and Louisville!! Again at the end of the year i think we will see a victory against a very average ND team.

No, we don't. We have the Edwards and Biggie for that. We need him to play his role, keep the offense moving, play some point, play decent defense and hit the open 3. That's all.

Thank you for your thoughts, Mrs. Cline. We will take it under advisement.

He can score, but I'm unaware of anyone thinking his role is to score. PJ can score, but his role isn't to score. Cline's role is to be a shooter and make good decisions in passing the ball. Biggie is a scorer, both edwards are scorers and Haas when able to get minutes and be effective is a scorer. There is one ball and four people without the ball. You cannot have a team where everyone is looking for their shot. Dakota is a team player...solid in many phases measured in skill, heart and cerebral understanding...even if not the most athletic player. This team was built on skill due to the previous teams struggling. There is more athleticism coming next year. Would I love for Dakota to average 18 and do everything else he does? Yes, but he would be one and done. Dakota is playing about as well as his body allows and Purdue is better to have him on the team day in and day out.

Yeah. Painter must want to lose a lot and get fired. That's why he's playing Dakota so much. You nailed it.

Please don't group me with the OP.....just saying, I love the role that DM plays....

We have a rotation of 8 He's gonna play. Se will see how far his great D and Great passing helps us. After all these posts I'm thinking he may carry us a long way, i'll be watching and hoping he can. We will see when we play Wisconsin, IU and the Spartans. They all have players like DM and they count on them to score , play d and pass and their better athletes. Their flipping college basketball players. I hope he doesn't end up on the bench in crunch time like last year in the tourney where he watched the better athletes take over the game and beat us. Biggie and Vince better light it up every game if we don't need DM to score. Wont happen gentlemen

So do you want to kick him off the team or play someone else and if so...who?

Last year Dakota was the best player on the court against Maryland.

(May have been Wisconsin)

He also hit a huge shot against Ohio state.

Those just off the top of my head.

I see you moving the goalposts now that you got called out. Nice try.

BTW he did drop 17 against top 10 Maryland last year. So there's that.

Just being facetious, he won't carry us anywhere if we rely on him, and we act like he can. Just look at leading scorers, rebounders, assists this year or last not on the list 40 some games. Maybe you are right he did score 17 against maryland,THAT"S 1 game. Maybe MRS Cline should be mad. Goalposts staying right where they are

You most certainly are moving the goalposts. This started as a condemnation on him playing. When you lost that argument convincingly you're pretending that everyone is claiming he can carry a team. The only way that holds weight is if you think every player has to be able to carry a team which is even more idiotic than your original premise. Should probably stop right there but I get the sense you're in this for the long haul. At least this will be entertaining.

Mathias was a fringe top 100 recruit. He committed to us at a time when the program was way down. He is an outstanding passer, good ball handler, and he has made efforts to vastly improve his defense during his entire career. The 3's were not falling for him but he had 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and only 2 fouls in 32 minutes. Prior to yesterday we was above 50% from 3 for the season, and still may be. I feel that Mathias consistently plays at a level above his recruiting ranking. But most importantly, he is a Boiler through and through. He would do anything to help his team and the program. I am still issuing "Strong Buy" guidance on him.

I said he doesn't play well in the big games-- does he based upon games noted. You said carry at team i said he needs to shoot better and play better in big games. that does not mean carry a team. Read all the posts then you may get a feel for what i'm saying. If he is on the bench like he was at the NCAA tourney game at the end ...that is not helping our cause. We will see hopefully i'm wrong

-Dakota shot 45.5% from 3pt last year in games vs ranked teams or in tournaments. He shot 34.3% in the other games on the schedule.
-Dakota shot 41.5% from 3pt last year in B1G play vs 36.1% against non-B1G teams

Yes, he's struggled shooting in the 3 games against the best competition so far this year. It's possible teams are/will game-plan him differently this season & he'll continue to struggle against the best teams. However, his history suggests he's more than capable of performing at a high level in the biggest games.

You should let it die because you're looking pretty ridiculous. You originally said we needed to "find anyone we can develop who can play D and not going to let you down on the offensive end" in the very first post in this thread. When people started to point out his strengths and justify his starting spot, you tried to move the goalposts. You were then the person to bring up him being able to "carry" the team in post 25 which nobody had ever said he was going to do that.

I like that comment, "Read all the posts then you may get a feel for what I'm saying".... Sorry, but most of the follow-on posts flat out refuted what you said in your OP. The fault, dear sir, is in your initial opinion. You based it on looking at a few box rather than watching the game. Now it seems that you have come back around just a little, and maybe modified your initial thinking. That's a good thing.

Few of us are bright enough about any subject to form coherent and accurate opinions without the input from others. That's the cool thing about these message boards. They help all of us understand the game better. You don't have to be right all the time, but you need to pay attention to what others post to validate your observations, and be ready to update your perspective.

Who is "we"? I don't recall anyone ever saying that Mathias will carry this team. Ever.

If it is you have have been saying it, then I agree with you that you are wrong.
