DJ Practice in Providence…

Re DJ:

Interesting, but really no reason he shouldn't be at least practicing if he's healthy.

Seems like he'd have a case for a medical reshirt even if he does play in the NCAA.

He/Purdue would absolutely not be able to apply for a medical hardship waiver if he plays again this season. Painter has said repeatedly he's not playing again this season, and I would have to think these are progressive instances for him to work his way back into game shape, but he's not ramped up or going anywhere need competitive pace and also isn't medically cleared to do that.

Also, my understanding of the rules (which could certainly be wrong) would require Purdue and him to provide contemporaneous medical documentation that this was a season-ending injury preventing him from competing. IF he's healthy enough to compete, even if he doesn't compete, that would suggest Purdue couldn't apply for the eligibility waiver. I've not really seen a scenario come up before concerning the season-ending aspect, and I'm not speculating that it's relevant here. Usually, schools look for an exemption/exception based upon the time already played being close to or above the limit. That's not the case here, as DJ only played two games into the season.

Regardless, it's indeed very good to see DJ out on the court and progessing with his rehab. From the naked eye, the healing process seems to have gone well without any further complications. You'd have to think he's hungry for next year and will make a contribution on both ends of the floor.

Isn’t it 8 games or less for a medical redshirt?

Luke Goode is trying to petition the NCAA that since he only played in 10 games his sophomore year, that he should get a year back. He had surgery in October and came back at the end of the year.

So…there’s a max of 6 games left. Maybe we have DJ play and then sue the NCAA and win the case since they just bow down instantly 😂

That would be great but I think the rule is based linearly from beginning to end. Meaning it’s only applicable on a go forward basis rather than applying the game rule in the reverse.

He's not going to play but I'm not sure your statement above is true at this point. Goode is applying for another year after playing all of his games in the back half of the season. I could be wrong but it doesn't seem cut and dried.

Fair point in that the NCAA could always grant a waiver outside the rules, and they might if Indiana and Luke Goode apply for that one....it's still outside the usual criteria. What they should do is just revise the medical hardship process and also allow a limited number of games for a redshirt season in all circumstances. On the other hand, if you're going to have a rule and say it has to be a season-ending injury.....and then in the same breath say "well except for this.....and except for that....." (which is what the NCAA has done in enforcement stuff too - sorry, dinosaur mode kicked in again......)

I get it when someone might be just over the other limits (% of games or just over the half-way point). Given the way things are going on relaxing eligibility and maximizing playing opportunities, my guess is that Goode would get the additional year - he played 10 games at the end of the season.

I think folks underestimate game conditioning and the impact of changing roles last second

Currently you can not play any games and medically redshirt. If you play then you have to petition to be granted a medical redshirt year. If the ncaa adopts the football rules ( rumored to be under consideration) for this its 33% of games so roughly 10 games.

That all being said I believe DJ is planning and believes he can leave college early for the NBA. If up to him he might choose to gamble on returning this year and if indeed he stays 4 years he could then choose eto petition for a medical redshirt year after his senior year.

Even if he were to play conditioning would be the biggest issue…

Yes! If he develops as we hope/expect, he likely won't need that medical redshirt yr anyway.
