I can recall Mathias guarding him one possession last night. In the event Purdue faces PSU in the tournament, you have to assume Mathias will draw the assignment, right?

Couldn't believe Purdue didn't adjust to him using his size over PJ.

Glad they escaped with a victory, but didn't really want to face them again without some changes to the game plan.

I think Carr scored on Penn State's last four possessions of regulation....part of a 10-2 run in the last three minutes to force OT......without even attempting a 3-pointer, IIRC.

CMP post-game said they tried to do some different things with Carr, but if they did....it wasn't working.

That last three minutes of regulation needs to go in the training files on how not to finish off a game. PJT hung tough; it was a tough match-up for him. He hit some big shots too, including the sealing FT's, but it was also an uncharacteristically tough ball-handling game for him....three turnovers.....a season high. Credit Penn State some.....PJT has 20 turnovers all season, and five are against the Nittany Lions.

Penn State could do some damage in the BTT, and I look for them to be a rising team in the conference next year.

On to Ann Arbor for the Boilers....dodged one in Happy Valley.

Yeah - I felt bad for PJ. He was a sitting duck. Nojel would have been nice to have last night!

Also to be fair to PJ, that over-and-back late was completely not a violation as the ball was knocked away from him, twice actually, before he recovered it in the backcourt. That was a blown call that easily could've cost us the game.

Yeah, I'd like to see the replay again.....and the announcers seemed to gloss over it, IIRC on that.....it's not like the Big Ten officials to miss something like that.

Purdue did try different defenders down the stretch, but Carr answered the challenge every time. He got his last 6 baskets in a variety of ways. It was a pretty impressive stretch by Carr & sometimes you just need to tip your cap:

4:40 - layup against PJ (& Biggie) high ball screen
3:43 - Backed down, post-up move against PJ (Biggie tried to help)
2:33 - layup against Dakota (& Biggie) high ball screen
1:57 - about a 17 ft jumper over Vince (the one that bounced straight up off the back of the rim & fell through)
1:12 - Got in the lane for a little 2-3 footer against Vince
0:20 - Backed down, post-up move against PJ

Thankfully, he wasn't able to continue that run in OT---he was 0-2 with a turnover.

good points.....VE also made a critical help in OT.....was that on Carr? can't remember off the top of my head.

It looked to me like even though the ball was tipped PJ recovered it before he actually fell over the half-court line.

How I saw it was that the Penn State player actually tipped the ball away twice and I thought the first time PJ recovered it was on our side of the court but then it got tipped away again and recovered on the Penn State side. Perhaps I'm wrong about that but that's what the replay looked like to me.

PJ did try to recover it before going back court and then it was tipped again and in the replay, you could see him avoiding the ball until he crossed into the back court. So it was Penn State who touched it last in the front court and PJ was completely in the back court when he grabbed it.

Thanks for putting this sequence together. I would have gone with Mathias down the stretch and done everything possible to make Carr shoot it outside the paint. Mathias only had one crack at him and Purdue defended the high ball screen poorly.

The way I see it was that he had to have possession to be an over and back, but if he had possession, he was clearly being fouled by the psu player reaching in. Can't have the over and back with no foul called.

I'll give PJ a pass on the over back turnover. That call was putrid. The defender fouled him twice and touched then ball in the back court before PJ did. Don't know how he wins that play. The pick at the top was just sloppy by PJ. I don't remember the third.
