Interesting. Hope added to USF staff as co-offensive coordinator and USF goes from 4-8 to 8-4. Not saying that Danny was the only one driving the turn around, but he was just nominated as a candidate for the national assistant of the year award.

Folks here wanted a change from mediocre bowl games, I guess they got that with Hazell.

I don't recall anyone questioning Hope's skills as an assistant. He just couldn't cut it as a HC.

He hasn't stopped laughing his ass off in years. As I post this he's sitting there like, "hahahahaha, the big improvement they were looking for involved hiring John shoop!?!? Hahahahaha! He said what?! He's going to coach as though he's Jim tressel in west Lafayette???? Hahahahaha."

I'm not saying he's joe tiller but this whole turning your nose up at Hope routine is patently hilarious based on what is being tolerated now.

Knowing what I know now, I'd rather have kept Hope if I knew they weren't going to even try on the next hire by going cheap.

Whether Hope was a terrible coach or not is mutually exclusive to how crappy our current coach is.

Danny got us to 6-6 his last year, but we were not a very good team. We had to beat the 3 bad "I" teams that year (IU, ILL, Iowa) to get to 6-6. You could see a physical disadvantage for us against any team so you knew we were in bad shape. Still, he could eek out some wins whereas Hazell has made us even worse and frankly, we're years away from straightening out this mess.

That's part of the irony, they didn't go cheap with Hazell. Darrell has far more resources for paying assistant coaches and around recruiting than either Tiller or Hope had. I can't help but wonder where we'd be now if Burke had just given Tiller or Hope the resources they needed rather than pushing them out the door.

I think, post Rose Bowl, had MB paid people (assistants), hired more support personnel, and upgraded facilities, we could have been a consistent 9-3/8-4. Hope would have never gotten a crack at it; either Spack or Sumlin (would have left Houston) to come back. Of course part A, the commitment, would have never happened. You also get a gut feeling that revenue head coaches do not care for MB.

It's hilarious to hear anyone say that Hope "couldn't cut it", given where we are now. With far fewer resources for hiring assistants and recruiting, Danny consistently won more games and had significantly higher rated recruiting classes. He clearly had shortfalls, but when you look at the current situation with any self awareness at all, you have to ask whether he was put in a position to have a chance to succeed.

It's easy to look at the last three years and just say the Hazell and his assistants are terrible, but to do that would be to gloss over the deeper issues.

Agree 100%. First mistake was not listening to Tiller's pleas for additional resources. Some of that was MB not pushing hard enough, but more was the University leadership thinking they could just keep milking the cash cow. If that happens you are correct, Hope never gets a shot at HC.

Second mistake, and this was intentional by MB, was ensuring that Tiller's successor wouldn't be successful. Tiller had enough sway to be able to demand input on his successor, but MB blocked the hiring of Spack and Chaney and rather than giving Hope the resources he needed to have a fighting chance, ensured that if he were to succeed, it would be in spite of very limited resources.

Morgan Burke likes people he can control. People who won't give a sound bite, say a bad word, give bland generalities when giving an answer. Morgan wants people who knows he is the boss. Darrel does this to perfection. Joe Tiller did this for a bit, then had success, had Drew Brees, and knew he didn't have to be Morgan's pet monkey anymore. Keady was the same way and spoke out against Morgan. Matt Painter had success and pantsed him with the Missouri thing. Morgan hates people like that.

Jon Heacock also nominated. .defensive coordinator at Toledo. ..smart enough to get away from this train wreck.
Him and Coach Hudson could not get along. Coach Heacock came over and took a demotion because of his loyalty to Hazell. He was a head coach and a defense coordinator before he came to Purdue. As for Hudson there was a reason he got passed over for coordinator at Florida State university. It was a mutual parting of ways. Too many issues with drinking at FSU.

If I was as bad of a defensive coordinator as Hudson, I would drink a lot also.
