1) Biggie fouling out. That's the first time I can remember that happening this season. Hoping it's the last.

2) I still think our bigs need to kick the ball out more when the double team comes. To many times I see them still try to force a shot. With our 3 point shooting, they need to look for the open guy.

3) Vince... needs to play like he did against NW. I thought that was his best performance of the year & then to disappear like he did against the Terps was concerning.

I agree with these, although I would put at the top ~ two of our outside shooters going cold. I also am not very concerned about Biggie fouling out, far more concerned about Haas fouling out, that would have a couple of impacts, including Biggie wearing out.

So, mine are (and assuming injury is not a concern):
1. Two outside shooters going cold in an important game
2. Bigs handling physical double teams poorly - it is clear that is the way to play against us
3. Vince being "bad Vince" more than a couple of times, and not in big games
4. Haas fouling out - especially early in the game, or even getting two fouls early in the first 1/2, thus forcing Biggie to play a lot.
5. Not handling the high ball-screen well ... this is perhaps a higher priority than some others above it
6. Experimenting with a couple of zones here and there ... just for fun

I think our outside shooting is a big deal, and that has a direct impact on on your #2 with Swanigan/Haas. For example, we were not hitting our outside shots in the first half against Maryland. If we were hitting outside more, it would put less 'pressure' on our inside guys. And it also allows teams to be more liberal with their help defense.

I think it works much better for us to have our outside shooters open up the insider game vs. our inside game opening up the outside. Swanigan struggles when he is bodied up and double teamed. And Haas can as well. Maryland had the personnel to play these guys. Swanigan definitely got his points, but it wasn't the most efficient.

Swanigan has fouled out of two games in a row. He fouled out against NW too but obviously it wasn't a big deal. He also fouled out against ASU (also not a big deal).

1. Your memory is bad, he fouled out the game previous. This should have always be a concern and nothing new as we are thin at that position with Taylor out, we need to give him favorable defensive matchups and he needs to be smart.

2. We need balance and not every shot will scream perfection, we also need to pressure their bigs down low and force the refs hands when it comes to calling a foul.

3. I also want Vince to play like he did against NW every game, but thats most likely not going to happen, he needs to keep on working hard and making sure he controls the smaller aspects of the game like defense and rebounding, shots will begin to fall.

All valid concerns, but can be looked at in a multitude of ways, I like our teams versatility and resilience.

Vince playing like he did against NW. I know he hit 5 three but that was all his scoring. I'd much rather have the Vince who scores 12-14 by getting to the basketball. Getting offensive put backs. And hitting from the outside. I def will take it anytime he wants to hit 5 threes tho.

I'm OK with Biggie fouling out toward the end of a game if his defense is needed to win. I get him playing less aggressive on D throughout, so we can keep him as an offensive threat. But toward the end of a close game, I want to see him work his @$$ off on D and if he fouls out, so be it.

My biggest concern going forward is giving up points in the paint. We beat Maryland, but gave up an obscene number of them. Melo didn't shoot well, but his ability to hit his big men down low while driving to the basket was darn good until we put Dakota on him.

However, I see a lot of other teams struggling with this too this year, with the new "freedom of movement" rules in effect.

Concerns continued:

...

4. too many turnovers (having 13 or more in a game is my baseline for what I consider too many)

5. Matt Painter (he's still Purdue's head coach)

However the D plays, the O will read and adjust. Whether it starts on the perimeter due to sag or whether it starts inside to more straight up play...PURDUE cannot forget to go inside. It is a huge advantage to get fouls on the inside players of most teams unless they have tremendous depth....AND makes it more difficult for them to hurt Purdue's inside players. Hitting the three ball is nice, but it can make a team too comfortable and not punish the opposing team with fouls. Take what the D gives you, but always be aware of an inside presence.

Oh, I agree. I'm very quick to point out that Purdue's best games are when the right number of outside shots are taken. Even when you're "hot" from outside, it's always smart to remember that your highest percentage shot is the closer to the basket. Purdue's done a great job of this at times during the season. There's been times when they have forgotten - like the second half at Iowa.
