The worst move was leaving PJ, Cline, and Mathias in there from about the 10 minute mark to the 3 minute mark. They missed every shot. If Carsen was in there I doubt that would of happened and I think Purdue could of pulled away
Easy to say so in hindsight. I would agree that we did better when we drove to the rim than when we took mostly jumpers. The worst move was leaving PJ, Cline, and Mathias in there from about the 10 minute mark to the 3 minute mark. Carsen over Cline is a no brainer. Better defender & better shooter last night. He's a freshman, he's going to make mistakes, but he more than makes up with it with the other things he does. I did like the fact that CMP had him in at the end of the game. He was also guarding OSU's final shot.Carsen Edwards: 5 - 11 (2-5 three) and 3 TO's
PJ: 2-4 (all from three) 4 assists and 0 TO's
Cline: 1-5 (0-2 three) 2 Reb 2 Ast 0 TO's
Mathias: 5-12 (2-5 three) 2 TO's
So looking at the numbers, tell me again who should have gotten the minutes?

I would argue that Cline is in fact the better defender right now in conference games. Going back to the Minnesota game, Carsen was frequently defending the same players as other guards/wings differently. This led to Carsen giving up a lot of easy buckets because he wasn't doing the same thing and what was expected in the scouting report (he was going under screens and leaving the bigs and other wings at a disadvantage when defending on ball screens).Carsen over Cline is a no brainer. If CMP felt that way, he would have had Cline in for the last 5 seconds. Not only was CE in, he was guarding the guy everyone knew was going to take the shot. I think that speaks volumes.I would argue that Cline is in fact the better defender right now in conference games. One thing is standing out is CMP has changed in regards to coaching for the better during the offseason. He has "fixed" mistakes he used to make and is making rather good adjustments overall this season.
Ironically, it happens when he added a stud frosh in CE. I don't know if there is any correlation, but I hope he keeps it up.
I think Carsen certainly can be a better defender than Cline thanks to his superior athleticism. But Cline is a fundamentally better at this point.........because he is consistent and he has no other choice. He has to defend smarter and work harder than Carsen to overcome his physical weaknesses. When Carsen understands that great defense is shutting your man down, helping out, and playing team defense he will get most of the steals he's going after and become a great defender.......I think elite good. A stopper. But he has to want to be a great defender, great defense is about attitude.
I was surprised he was in at the end, to be honest. It also scared the hell out of me when he got so close to Lyle on the shot. Maybe he was just trying to get hands in his face........I hope he wasn't going for the block.......but it was too close for me. But he was in and Painter obviously trusted him, as 4Purdue said. That's why Painter makes millions and I watch the game from the couch.

I even heard Painter tell them before going in to miss every shot they took! Insane! The worst move was leaving PJ, Cline, and Mathias in there from about the 10 minute mark to the 3 minute mark. calling the TO after OSU tied the game at 75 & icing Thomson for the free throw. I don't think this was CMP's best coaching job, but that one move saved this one IMO. Also props to GBI for their prediction of the game to be 75-73. Not far off.
None of the above? Our guards hit 50% we are darn near unbeatable. Average when they don't. Sad thing is these are mostly standstill straight up good looks. None can consistently create shots off the dribble. Offensive boards saved us.Carsen Edwards: 5 - 11 (2-5 three) and 3 TO's

I was watching that also. I'm pretty sure Fran called the TO, which again , I thought was great coaching.Going OT, but speaking of coaches icing players on the line, Tim Miles might have accidentally done that to his guard Evan Taylor last night. Nebraska and Iowa were tied at 75 with a few seconds left in regulation when Taylor was fouled. He missed the first and then a time-out was called, by Tim Miles! I know he probably wanted to set up a defensive approach on Iowa's last second heave but Taylor might have made that second free-throw if Miles would have just let it be. Anyway, Nebraska pulled out the W in double-overtime but I was just laughing for a moment because that decision looked like it was going to go down as a very bad one by Miles.
If you actually watched the game Mathias had most of his points early. Sure Carsen has some TOs but he makes stuff happen on offense. I'm not saying all those guys need benched that lineup just wasn't working for that stretch.Carsen Edwards: 5 - 11 (2-5 three) and 3 TO's

That was a fun game to watch. I also thought that Iowa called the timeout when it was tied at 74 (not 75). The play-by-play listed on the ESPN site confirms it was an Iowa timeout.I was watching that also. I'm pretty sure Fran called the TO, which again , I thought was great coaching.
