CMP must read my post :)

I'm surprised only because it's so rare to possibly redshirt a junior (and for a junior to accept it), but I think we're just too crowded in the front court this year. After AJ leaves, Basil will have a significant role on the team and I would say a major role his [to be] redshirt senior year. This year, sadly he wouldn't have much of a role (at least in games) barring injury and that's not a knock on his quality of play.

Baird also said that Smotherman approached Painter about the topic. I hope he does redshirt because I think that Smotherman's role will increase substantially after Davis leaves. There's just too much of a logjam at the 3 and 4 positions this season.

Agreed

I don't know about an increased role next year. Basil can play the 3/4. More than likely both Vince and Biggie will be back next year along with Cline, Mathias, and Cline who could also factor into major minutes at the 3. Not many more minutes for him next year either

Damn, Cline twice?

Purdue is a renowned engineering school after all. With the Boilers recent shooting woes, maybe a "clone" scholarship is available.

In all seriousness, I can't think of a recent example of an upperclassman redshirting without an injury, but if Basil Smotherman approached CMP about it, I'm fairly certain CMP would give him a straight-up assessment going forward.

Hope it all works out for him and the team.

Maybe Basil or a family member read your post and got him thinking about it? Probably just a coincidence, but then once in a while someone on the message boards has a good idea that the staff or players might not have thought about before. Some of us suspect that the poster Nagemj has posted some analysis of potential transfers that was either coincidentally spot-on, or possibly used as a source of leads by the staff. He probably put in as much time doing research as an assistant would, and is a very clear communicator so who would ignore a good suggestion? I know of a local politics message board in Hamilton County that is often scoured by news agencies, and has resulted in several stories being picked up by Indy Star and other reporters. Like everything on the Internet, people are cautious. But there are always some informed ideas from the crowd, and facts can always be verified by anyone in doubt.

The key to this will be that when he returns from his redshirt, he is a full year stronger, quicker, and a better decision maker. Basil is already one of my favorite players. I just don't want him to take a year off waiting for someone in front of him to leave. He should come back a team captain, playing like a senior.

Basil has the ability to be a very good defender and that would allow him to step into Davis's role. Is he Davis, no. But very athletic, and can guard multiple positions. Painter and staff will evauate it.
The other item is if Painter wants to shorten his schollys by one year in that 2018.

Best scenario for a National Championship this year and to still protect the future is to: Have Dakota back up Hill at point, Kendall back up Raph, Basil back up Vince, and Jacquil back up Biggie. Redshirt PJ and Cline.

The problem with redshirting Basil is that he's Purdue's most athletic guy. You need athletes when you go up against North Carolina and their 6'8" freaks in the Tournament when Vince gets two early fouls. Dakota is too small to handle that type, Kendall too soft, and Jacquil too slow. Basil is just right. There's a chance that I'm underselling the ability of Kendall and Jacquil. But up to this point I've never once seen Stephens exhibit the toughness and strength required to shut down and outrebound a Justin Jackson and Taylor has chronic leg issues.

If Basil put in work with a shooting instructor like he did the last couple offseasons, it's reasonable to think he could jump up to 30% on his 3s. That would make him a very dangerous all around player.

Can you red shirt after your freshman year I don't think you can unless its a medical redshirt
yes, you can redshirt anytime. Purdue has had others redshirt after freshman year that weren't injured. Had one a few years back, I just can't remember who.

With Ray gone due to graduation next year, that opens up a decent number of potential minutes for Basil to have an opportunity that just won't exist this year regardless of Basil's good work and effort.

The thing about Basil though is that he brings a unique explosiveness and an energy dimension in a way that others don't. I think it's hard to play him over other skilled guys, like Stephens/Mathias, but I think there have been times when our defensive intensity from some spots can wane or lull in a game. Basil tends to bring that spark to the team when he gets on the floor. So, he's valuable to this year's team regardless. It's just tough to burn a year of eligibility for him if those minutes are few and far between.

He's improved his decision making in his time at Purdue and if he develops a consistent jumper in games, he could do wonders for the team offense. Just hard right now to have him take minutes over others on the current roster.

This is correct. You have 5 years to use 4. It doesn't matter when you sit out during that 5 year period. I believe Brantley did it.
