CMP deserves a lifetime contract.

I thought the same would be true for Keady and knight. But when they stopped winning championships, public opinion changed.

Why was Keady forced into retirement? It’s very clear looking at what he did after he retired from Purdue that he really wasn’t ready to retire. He went to St. John’s and the NBA as a special assistant. He could still coach. But not at Purdue. Here, have a watch, thank you for your service!

Knight was fired by IU.

Knight’s situation was affected by his student altercation on campus.

Purdue at the time had a policy of retiring coaches at the age of 70 which I think Keady was about to reach.

I have to believe if Keady had reached a final 4, the age regulation would have been waived. Indiana does have an age limitation for their state college employees. My mother in law was forced into retirement, received her gold watch and went back to work full time the next day at her desk on a private cancer research grant And continued to work until the day she died at age 80. There are always loopholes.

Unfortunately for Keady, his last two years were not successful ones, and the grumbling and outside pressure started.

My hope is that Painter is allowed to leave on his own terms rather than being helped out the door.

Keady was too honest for his own good. He started admitting to recruits and their parents that he MIGHT not be there all four years of their careers.

And let’s just also say that the program wasn’t being supported like it should have been…

The pace he is going he'll be at the top of the B1G sooner rather than later and have a large margin between him and #2 by the time he is done.
Long way to go to catch Izzo, and he's still adding to his total. Matt will have to want to coach a long time to get to that mark.

Where is Wole, and whatd you do with him?! This is NOT how he responds on here 😂

The biggest question with Painter is how long he will want to continue to deal with this current NIL and Transfer Portal NCAA mess, the reason the Virginia coach left coaching.
I think he has figured out his strategy and he won't let it bother him. The strategy is don't play that game...keep doing it the old fashioned way. If there's a hole in the roster, get a nice grad transfer but otherwise stay out of the portal and let the guys that want to play for Purdue develop over time. As long as you keep guys like that in the recruiting pipeline, this is sustainable.

I think he is doing one of his best coaching jobs this year no doubt
Hopefully others will see how good you can be without spending millions and getting 4 or more players out of the portal every year. Gotta build chemistry as a team no matter how good the players are. So hopefully the portal will calm down a bunch. I doubt it though.

I severely Doubt it too lol

For example, is Purdue the ONLY ranked team that hasn't used the portal this year? Maybe so..... although I have heard Marquette is another. With added revenue stream next year, it grows even more. So it's here with the majority & here to stay.

And Purdue likely adds a guy next year, so next year maybe no ranked teams without portal addition?

Yeah Marquette is the the only other school that did not.

Is it true that it grows next season? I thought there were aupposed to be more controls in place starting next season?

Yes, and in fact as zz pointed out, Lenny's BFF Shaka hasn't gone to the portal the last three seasons.

Painter's approach seems fair, team-oriented, and he's using his usual up-front no-nonsense approach with it. But will he and Purdue be able to fight the cross-winds for retention of key members of the team? Who knows when they keep flushing the pipes with more and more cash - human nature says some people can't say no or help themselves. And with currently no guardrails, effective guidance, or repercussions in place......it could be the Wild Wild West until someone wakes up or one of the sacred cows get burned........

then it'll be - "Marshall? You gotta do something."

I believe Painter has a consistent 20 win program. Adding somebody from the portal could add 5-10 wins. But Painter is not going to go out of his way to add some superstar via the portal. He will assess the team needs and go after a complementary player to fill those needs. Look at Jones. Painter saw a need and filled it. Jones was not one of the top 10 players in the portal. But he filled a need.

At the time Jones signed with Purdue, he had a reputation for being great defensively and a good ball handler and a good 3 point shooter. Those three skills fit the needs Painter was looking for.

I highly doubt Painter will ever go after the big names in the portal like Dickinson. But if he sees a need and there is a player out there that fills that need. Painter will recruit that player.

I believe Cox is a good example. Painter could have used that scholarship on a portal player. But he saw what he liked and offered Cox the scholarship instead.

You don’t have to be an overhyped superstar to be good at Purdue! Look at Mathias. He was never an All American in anybody’s eyes. But he was good at Purdue. And he’s still playing pro ball and doing well. I still remember Brian Cardinal and Sheffler. I have no idea how many stars they had coming out of high school or what other offers from big name schools they had. They just gave it everything they had. That’s the type of player that brings success to Purdue basketball.

Starting in 2025-2026 academic year, each school can directly pay up to $20.5 M across all sports. Bobinski has said PU will have the whole $20.5 to spend.

Do you know how many scholarships are available for next year? I didn’t look it up. I could envision CMP choosing an athletic wing or another ball handler from the portal if they would fit our culture like Lance Jones did.

Is Painter still recruiting for next year? I didn’t see much activity. I hope I’m wrong because I favor recruiting over the portal.

And thanks to Title IX, $10.25M of that has to go to female student athletes. it will be interesting to see how the remainder is distributed. Some schools will load up on football. Some will load up on basketball. I'd wager Purdue will lean toward something more equitable than most and will fall a little further behind.

I think (hope) the largest risk is with supporting players who don't have a clear path to be featured. Obviously Purdue has shown that they can take care of guys like Zach and Braden who are already stars. I haven't seen it substantiated but word is that after Trey's second season (rs freshmen) there were other programs sniffing around and MP sat down and told him that he would be the featured post player after Zach was gone.

I don't know what you do if programs come to Cam or Myles after this season and say 'we will make you a featured guy'. You hope that winning is enough, particularly given the potential ceiling for next season, but there's risk there.
