Carsen should be starting...

Pretty sure Biggie played his ass off even tho shots weren't falling early for him! Wish more played with his emotion
I don't see it. To me, after the first half, he looked like he was only out to get his. Even on the last possession with 2.9 left, he didn't want to take the ball out, he wanted the last shot when it's obvious the ball should be inbounded to a guard. Was not a good night for any of our bigs IMO

More proof you shouldn't be critiquing players because you have zero clue.

I suppose that beautiful pass into Haas for a slam, in the second half, was just him playing to "get his"? Really? WTF buddy?

I really like Edwards and I'm excited for his potential, but he didn't really show anything tonight that makes me think we would've been better off with him starting. The shots already weren't falling, and the very first thing he does when he gets in the game is take a 23-footer with a guy right in his face, about 8 seconds into the possession.

No fight ='s we loose by 20+ !!! Don't know what game you were watching but those kids were fighting in the 2nd half. It wasn't just from the 2 kids you listed...just wasn't our night.

him and RC were the only 2 that showed any heart tonight.

First of all, how anyone can question Swanigan on this team in terms of desire is beyond me. He plays hisass off every night.

Second, Carsen is consistent in only one thing at this point: taking shots. Many are bad shots, and many are misses. Tonight he was 4-15, 1-6. He's not a guy this team can rely on each and every night if we're going to be any good.

If you don't think we looked lethargic the entire 1st half and most of the second, then I guess we have different expectations. VE looks like he doesn't even try anymore. 1 point from a guy that has NBA expectations... A nationally televised game to play like that was sad.

I realize he didn't shoot well, but he attacked the rim better than anyone else on the team. He's also only a freshman and will only get better. Should be starting over Vince.
Vince Edwards? I don't think they play the same position. We give up some height with that sub.

I agree that he should be starting but not because he's a better overall player than the five starters. It's just that he has a different skill set that we need in there. I think he should take less threes, mainly taking them only when he is actually open.

IMO Biggie wants the ball because he is confident he will make the shot, not because he is "out to get his." Biggie is a big time player, when he shoots it's going in.

Or would you rather have a villanova repeat with all of our players too afraid to take the final shot and end up with an awful toss-up?

Carsen Edwards needs to slow down, the shots will come, he forces the issue when it isn't called for. Swanigan is by far our best player and isn't getting enough touches early

I think Carsen is learning. He's showed flashes, but I don't think he has shown enough consistency to start. I thought PJ was solid tonight. I liked Carsen and PJ together.

On another note, Biggie worked hard and did his usual great rebounding and nice interior passing. Too bad IH couldn't finish. I wish Vince worked as hard.

CE hasn't performed well against good teams, but has against lower level teams. We need to see him step up against better competition before worrying about him starting.

I would start Carsen and see how he does. I love his energy and athleticism. He made some shots tonight that I don't think anyone else on the team could make. He is plenty fast. He will make some freshman mistakes but he will only get better as the season progresses. On the other hand, I am not sure why Vince is struggling so much! I know he can play much better than he has so far this season. I hope he bounces back soon! We are going to need him playing at a high level, if we are going to have a chance at a really special season.

Vince needs to be benched... that and or haas benched as well.

Haas offers nothing on defense, and is a turnover machine on offense. He either turns it over himself, or someone turns it over trying to force it into him. We played EXTREMELY soft tonight.. couldnt get it inside, and when we did, haas and swanigan were catching it 5 to 8 feet off of where they usually do.

College bball is all about guard play right now, but we are all about 2 giant's in the middle. I'm fine with Swanigan, but Haas continues to piss me off. So soft, so weak. This was such a winnable game with how bad Louisville is on offense. I just dont think this team will ever get over the hump, especially not away from home

I tend to agree with you. When the season started, I said he would be an impact player for us and would start at some point and before the season is over I think he will.

The question at this point is why wait ? It's VERY clear that he can handle the ball better than anyone else on our team, has the best overall skills of any guard & is one of the few who can create his own shot.

Yes, . . he takes bad shots on occasion and will make some freshman mistakes, but if you remember . . Biggie got better by the end of the year. If you don't think he is a BIG part of any success we have at the end of the year, then you need to open your eyes.

He has TONS more potential than Ronnie, the sauce, Johnson and Ronnie started. He needs experience. what are we waiting for ?? Having Vince bring the ball up isn't the answer - we need his energy focused on driving to the bucket and rebounding.

Besides, if we don't play zone against Louisville (who is the perfect target for it) we have to keep people out of the paint. He's our best bet from a Man D perspective, even though I still believe the whole Man D concept is flawed with this team ! ! How many games will we have to lose to learn this lesson ? The answer is: "TOO MANY !" A variety of zones could have won all of our games this year.

I would start Carson and PJ the next game.

I agree that Carsen should be starting sooner rather than later and with the notion of bringing Vince off the bench. That worked for AJH and Vince may need that to sort himself out before getting in to the game.

So with that, I'd do a starting 5 of:

Haas
Biggie
Basil/Dakota
Carsen
PJ

But then again, there is a reason I don't coach :)

Very much agree with this.

Carsen Edwards definitely has the most complete skill set and the highest ceiling of among the guards. But he's also a work in progress and sometimes reminds me of young Bryson Scott and Ronnie in terms of trying to do too much.

PJ, on the other hand, is far less of a creator, but he's also a steadying influence. He takes care of the basketball, and his shot selection is very good.

Never said anything about the 1st half or Vince...smh lol. Yes we played like shit and need to play better but don't talk about different expectations. Watch more baseketball before you speak again please!

Yes but....PJ is slow getting the offense started in the half court. Several times we didn't even get going until less than 20 seconds remained and ended up with a lousy shot. He needs to get that ball up the damn court and get started earlier. Carson did that and it helped our offense tremendously. Keep Dakota and Carson and let PJ sub.

not sure of being a starter and he is an offensive player that may make Purdue better by initially sitting. he needs minutes and he should improve adn does as you say bring something the others don't have. Purdue needs the best team going forward in February and he may work into more minutes and he may not. I love that Purdue has him as he does in fact bring something that is missing from the other players, but Purdue needs good chemistry at all times in a game as well as providing a different look if struggling. I think Cline showed more last night than any of the intrasquad games. I never expected much from him this year based on what I saw this summer, but he was a plus. Carsen will dictate his minutes

All I know is both times we climbed back into the game, Carson was on the floor.

...and you assumption could be correct. I also know that academic knowledge increases with foot size in both men and women in a certain foot range...pretty highly correlated and yet foot size has nothing to do with it :) Carsen will be a very good player for PUrdue and is a big plus, but I don't track minutes and data or see practices in overall team chemistry to know whether he should start or not. It wouldn't surprise me if he does become a starter.

Agree, Carson needs to be on the floor more in place of PJ. He will make some freshman mistakes, but that's ok. Let him work through all of that now. This team has a higher ceiling with Carson. PJ is steady and does ok, but to take that next step up, Carson needs to find his way and be much more involved. He adds things to this team that no other guard on the roster can.

As much as I like PJ and have often defended him, I have to admit that I see the validity in these views. PJ is probably at or near to his ceiling. He's steady but will only occasionally be a game changer. Carsen's athleticism and ability to get to the rim brings an entirely new dimension -- one that seems to be an imperative in today's game.

I respect PJ for how he's handled his role, but we may very well see Carsen take the reigns more often as the year goes on --- especially against opponents with very athletic back courts.

Not to go all stat-happy, but you do realize that Carsen had more minutes than both PJ and V. Edwards last night, right?

I don't think it matters who "starts" as Painter seems to be dispersing the minutes like last year where 9 guys are averaging between 15 to 30 minutes.

It matters because we were down 10 points very early in the game and 14 by halftime. We had to fight our way back. Carsen should start and take it to the hole early and often. This way our bigs can rebound and get putbacks.

certainly something can be said for put backs off of help defense covering a guy going to the rim.

He just needs to be better with his shot selection and play more within the team's offensive concepts at times. I just think it's taking him some getting used to because the style of offense he and his team played in HS contrasts with the way Painter's Purdue offense operates. I think it's clear he has the skills and ability to be a very good player, he just needs to become more efficient for his productivity to match his talent.

I'll live with some mistakes to have a guy who isn't intimidated by the game he is in. No hesitation or trepidation. He started bringing the ball up too and that stopped the "burn 9 seconds to cross half court" crap. I thought the kid was great and want to see more.
