Spin to counteract the "cheap" label Purdue has

It's not spin if its true. With the investment being made in player facilities....it doesn't make sense to match that with a budget coach. Bobinski isn't here to play around. He's here to put his stamp on the university's athletic department. He has nothing to gain from following in Burke's footsteps. Mitch knows this and from what I hear, the BOT is on board with giving legitimately funded athletics a try.

An immediate, extra $3-$5Mil estimated to the bottom line per team from the new Fox BBall deal that was inked a few months backed helps as well. Let's face it folks....the facts have changed.

We have an AD that wants to compete at high levels. We now almost have more money than we know what to do with (relative to pre 2010s levels) and that's with a lagging Football team. Why not spend it and try to make more?

CBS renewed their basketball only deal, but what was this additional fox sports basketball one?

Start throwing that money around, suddenly every one is in play. I would think a guy like Chip Kelly would be hard pressed to turn that down considering his fingerprint on the program is still there. Honestly, if $10 million a year is a real possibility, suddenly a lot of universities are going to start upping the pay of their coaches. I think Oregon could get Tom Herman for half that and be just as successful there.

Agree for the most part but I hear Herman has a boner for the Texas job and will likely make $5mil there as well. I think $10mil is about what it would take to get Chip back @ Oregon. His ego costs about $8mil on its own.

FWIW...I hope the BOT recognizes that BIG MONEY includes facilities, assistant coaches, recruiting budget, operating costs like uniforms etc. and players other support items, media and player costs of */- $200 @ game and then legal costs when the NCAA comes snooping ala OSU.

Reminds me of Rodney Dangerfield in Back To School when he was in class reciting on startup business costs.

This news makes me happy because that means Oregon isn't going to be targeting someone like Fleck or anyone else we will be looking at. They are going to be swinging for the fences and may take longer for them to lock up their next coach, so hopefully we have our guy signed and done by then to avoid any chain reaction hires too.

Does make you wonder as old as Phil Knight is, how much longer Oregon can keep this going unless they have another major supporter waiting in the wings. Not sure I can see Nike continuing to throw the money at Oregon without Phil Knight there directing it.

I doubt new CEO of Nike will dump all the money into Oregon that Knight does. Usually, new management wants to save money for shareholders. I have seen it often. Company Jet - Gone, Company Cars - smaller, Pensions - Gone, etc. etc. The Oregon check would be a huge area to cut costs.

I'm almost sure he will, but they probably will not want to spend that as freely since that maybe it.

I'd guess, both as their Nike deal is pretty much the best out there.

Nike will be tied to Oregon in a major capacity so long as their headquarters remain there. It wouldn't surprise me if Knight has set something up with Oregon for Nike similar to how Florida is still getting royalty checks from Gatorade.

But, I believe once the program reaches a certain level of success and fan expectations, it's hard to go backwards in terms of the financial resources needed to sustain it.(although Purdue managed to do exactly that and we see the results).
