Yesterday was a very bad loss IMO, so needed to until the day after to post. You cannot let that team come in and beat you on your home field like that. They come in with a run or fall over backwards throwing a Hail Mary offense and you allow that to win. Embarrassing.

I am not yet ready to say Brohm should be fired but he is getting there. He is playing with a MAC o line but that’s his fault. The QBs aren’t good enough to overcome sub par play up front. But he just has to get better. You have to have a TD at the end of the half and this dope takes all 3 timeouts to the locker room and settles for a FG. I swear to god he runs up the middle for nothing on pretty much every 2nd and 10 and my TV screen won’t survive much more of that nonsense.

Brohm needs to get better in a hurry or this is going to turn into another ugly season. He has to figure out a way to score points almost exclusively throwing the ball. Get on it, coach.

For being an offensive guru, his teams sure always find ways to lose games.

we’re now through the soft part of our schedule. It’s going to get really ugly.

and is there any reason to expect things to get better next year? We’ll lose our elite players to nfl, the QB currently on the roster clearly isn’t the answer, and recruiting fell off a cliff 2 years ago.

Purdue fans are so hungry for a winner - he’s had great support, but I expect that to dramatically change by the end of this season. Simply put, this team is hard to watch. It’s not good football.

For some reason his decision making hasn't been good between, hiring, play calling in the red zone, offensive line and who should lead our team at the QB position. All this falls on JB and he needs to figure it out quickly or he will be on the hot seat.

It does seem like the playbook has shrank over the past three years. I don't know if Brohm has become more conservative or if it's a lack of faith in the quarterbacks or if it's just that the offensive line isn't very dependable. Maybe all of those things are a part of it. I don't know. It's been frustrating. It feels like Purdue is squandering an opportunity for upward mobility in the West.

Offensive guru in the Western Kentucky league. Loser in P5 league.

Brohm’s a bust.

Some coaches just aren't .....and never will be primetime coaches!! Some excell in the small conference WKU type conferences and that's all they are cut out for. See this way to many times!

Agree yesterday was bad. Worst thing was I hate losing to Fleck. Overall I think this team will be competitive in most of these remaining games save Ohio State. One reason I'm not as discouraged is the D has been good and it's the offense that needs tweaked. If it was the other way around things would look more bleak IMO. A couple next day thoughts....

1. If I would have known Dorue would have ran for 90 yards I would have said 95% chance Purdue wins. I think there was some progress in run game, especially when you throw in the Burton wrinkle. The sack yards just masked the overall numbers.

2. How bad is the pass rush? If Karlaftis is getting double and triple teamed someone else should be disruptive. Was Mitchell hurt? If you want to boil the game down to one area it's the Minny pass rush killing drives with sacks and that opening drive forced fumble. Their Defense made the big plays that lead to a win.

3. This might be nit-picking, but I think it's time to put Anthrop back as punt/kick returner. Sheffield has made bad decisions that have cost the team field position several times this year. For a team that moves the ball well, but struggles to score those 5-20 yards of misjudgment could be the difference between another FG or maybe even a TD.

Brohm was hired as a offensive guru.Purdue is known for producing great QBs .He has brought in average QBs.You need outstanding offensive lines to succeed offensively. He has recruited mediocre OLs.What makes anyone think it will get better if he is given more time.

The greater problem is that we have nothing but MAC caliber offensive linemen in the pipeline. This isn't going to get better next year nor the year after that nor the year after that. The transfer portal is the only possible short-term solution but if you're getting transfers from Western Kaintuck and UTEP then it's just more of the same.

A dual threat QB would take some of the pressure off of the OL but we don't have one of those either.

Lol we’ve had one QB since tiller was hired and I began watching Purdue who was good enough to overcome this OL

Do not disagree at all. How can Tanner Morgan falling backwards deliver multiple hail Mary’s and we delivered maybe one long ball.
Our defense played well, but couldn’t sack him when needed.
Offense is and will be work in process thru the rest of the season. Expect something different for the latter half of this season.
I’ve been onboard with Brian Brohm calling plays exclusively and Jeff Brohm being CEO and making active in game adjustments and coaching up the players. Talking to units coming off the field and going on the field. Watching the playcalling card is missing details that they can exploit.

If this is a reference to Brees, it’s kind of hard to make that comparison since 4 of his 5 OL went on to play in the NFL. Orton had at least a couple of NFL guys on his line too. I’m picking up a trend.

Brees is better than oconnell. If Aidan stays and we have a makeover of the OL this off-season, I’m not sure many will think that there are all these other guys besides brees who are better than Oconnell. Orton was too slow to get away from the the red carpet this OL lays out for pass rushes

Nobody’s making the argument that O’Connell is better than Brees. I’m saying Brees didn’t really face the similar challenge of having to be mobile very often because he had a pro line protecting and providing him time. Also, the argument could be made that the running game in the Tiller era while overshadowed by the passing was stronger than now which also relates back to offensive line opening holes and run blocking. I guess the point I’m trying to make is it wouldn’t matter who was back there, without a line it’s tough to carry an offense. Look at the difference between the Colts with Peyton Manning and his line and Andrew Luck and his. Fans get spoiled by big numbers and long td passes but without the big uglies winning in the trenches those things go away.

Touche!

He was seldom sacked. AOC had four sacks yesterday.
True, but do you think tucking and running played more of a role in that than say protection, quick release, throwing it away sooner, being in the shotgun more than under center? Sacks given up say more about the line than the qb’s mobility or “escapability”.

Brees would have led Purdue to a two touchdown win.

Perhaps, but Purdue fans better understand that Drew Brees was a generational talent and he ain’t walking through that tunnel to play anytime soon. Want a Drew Brees? better hope the Brohms can pick up the slack in QB recruiting and OL recruiting/development or hope that some kid in Texas or wherever gets hurt his senior year and dropped by his major offers and Purdue is willing to take a chance on him.

By his senior year Brees hand off/release time from snap averaged 1.5 seconds. I'd say that had a lot to do with it.

Definitely. That offense was a pretty well oiled machine by his senior year. I think Tiller and his early staffs proved to be pretty good recruiters and player developers to the system. Just look at the amount of Purdue guys the Tiller era put into the NFL.

I didn’t think anyone was making that argument. Someone said something about how our QBs aren’t good enough to overcome our line and I laughed.. I don’t know much about bob griese or Len Dawson or mark hermann as players but I’ve seen one guy in my 23 years of watching who is good enough to overcome our line. Drew Brees

Brees would tuck the ball and run when he needed to. Neither Orton nor AOC do that.
Tiller had designed draws for Orton just about every game. Im not saying he was the quickest guy, but Orton did do some running. Aiden is stuck in concrete back there. Unfortunately, Plummer doesn't really have a feel for the blitz and isn't much of a scrambler himself.

Yes I like.. Aidan Oconnell isn’t better than drew Brees. He is better than Jack plummer and that shit yesterday wasn’t his fault.
Holding on to the ball...and taking sacks...entirely his fault, and, he knows better ( or should at least). Throwing into triple coverage...entirely his fault...he should have had at least 3 interceptions yesterday.

Both guys have flaws...I think O'Connell provides a better chance to win right now than Plummer, but, he did not have one of his better days yesterday. Definitely not on him as much as staff and OL, but, he definitely could/should have been better as well.

What was more proximate to the loss yesterday …

anything you mentioned about a guy who threw for 371
Eric Miller whiffing on a block
Broc Thompson falling down
The secondary biting on a couple fakes
The OL being a laugh fest such that we aren’t a threat to run in the red zone

rank those

If everyone on offense was as good at their job as Aidan is at his, we’d have won 42-10 yesterday

Sounds like an unprepared team. That falls on the man that leads.

It ALL starts with the OL, and, you left a few guys out...

But, THAT (the OL) is a known issue (or absolutely should be), and with that, it means that the secondary can't bite on fakes (never mind multiple times)...that the defense needs to get to the QB (and someone else already mentioned it...with Karlaftis being blocked by at least 2 guys, and, in a lot of cases, 3...how can NOBODY else be able to take advantage of that at all...how does the collective triumvirate of DC's not for that matter) and create turnovers as well.

O'Connell was way down the list of problems yesterday, no doubt about it, but, he made some really bad mistakes and really poor throws and decisions that a guy with his experience and general knowledge should not, and, it absolutely played a part in Purdue losing that game.

Just maybe he wants to be fired, and go back to coaching at a school like W.K.

So I guess this is how I view it. When Alaimo and Allen are ready it’s highly likely we don’t have any more Oconnells or Plummer’s being a factor. In the meantime, the kid is a walk on who threw for 371 in a game in which we held a big ten team to 17 points. Brohm has one job before a time comes at which we no longer need Aidan… fix the OL.

if he does and Aidan comes back next year, Aidan will be good enough. If he doesn’t, we’d need Brees to get results that are much better than what we are getting
