Seems odd to me too. Unless it were just a money move. And if it were, I'd think ND has the money to match if they want.
If Kelly did leave, I'd think the ND job would be as simple as a call to Luke Fickell.
ND is on the verge of a possible playoff spot and this clown leaves??? What a Dbag move that is! No way he should be talking with anyone until the season is over. I dislike ND and their fan base, but I’ve disliked Kelly even more! Now I feel that feeling is quite justified.

Well if they put them in the West they'd be a lock every year. We've been advised the East is just too hard to handle. On top of that how much confusion would there be among the reversible jacket crowd if they had to play each other?
I think it's pretty clear that ND is no longer a national championship caliber program. And Kelly knows it...

As potentially shocking as the move is, I will be equally shocked if he sees the end of that 10-year deal.
Don't even initiate a reason for him to return, much less respond...if/when he does, it will be some dissertation on how this was all part of the ND master plan of some sort.
