We have it good in GR: a healthy, diverse economy, affordable cost of living, big enough city to have a decent array of restaurants, nightlife and cultural attractions, but not so big you can't get away to Lake Michigan, wooded bike trails, wineries and so on quickly. By and large, friendly and caring people.

GR has issues too, but every place does.
GR is one of the best cities around. I wish I lived in that part of the state. I am a bit east of there, but often visit. Fun city.

. Amway world headquarters is in Ada.

That's a stain on an otherwise nice area. Accurately describing the operations of multi-level marketing firms and payday loan operations should be taught as life skill classes in our high schools. Would save many people large amounts of grief. Probably not going to happen any time soon though, for some reason.;)

you forgot to mention Founder's, when I was a frosh, Tom lived on the same floor at Owen Hall, one of these summers I want to vacation up in Traverse City.

I have a good friend who lives in Midland, another nice town NE of GR more toward Lake Huron.

Disclaimer: it's the home of Dow Chemical.

Live in Chicago but grew up in Grand Rapids for 15 years. One of the best cities in all of America, hands down.

My cousin and his family live in Comstock Park. Have always enjoyed visiting there, although my favorite spot in Michigan is Mackinac Island.

I lived in that area for many years. I've visited several countries and been all over the USA, and one thing that stands out for me is that Michigan has the most beautiful autumns anywhere.

Is that Labor day when autumn starts up there? Don't want to miss it.... :)

Labor Day's about right for the Upper Peninsula. October is prime for us "trolls" (who live "under" the Mackinac Bridge) in the far-more-populous Lower Peninsula.

After that comes the hard part: winter, which has its glories but for months on end grows cold, gray and seems relentless. Survive and spring-summer-fall await you.

Mackinac Island IS wonderful. The entire U.P. ("UP" north of the bridge) makes a great summer getaway/treat. Get ready to step back in time.

I've done the Race to Mackinac 9 times. One of the most enjoyable parts is sailing past Sleeping Bear Dunes, another is sailing under the Mackinac Bridge.
This year I'm doing the Hook Race, a multi day sailboat race similar to the Mac but shorter. The Hook finishes in Menominee, Michigan so I'll just barely get into the U.P.
I've also made a couple previous trips to the U.P., including an overnight canoe/camping trip in Sylvania (Watersmeet). I have a friend who currently lives in Hell and is planning to retire. He's seriously considering moving to the U.P. Upon retirement.
