What is the significance of winning a bowl game? And which win is more important, a regular season game or bowl game?

Obviously winning the bowl game is better than losing it, and it does count toward your overall record. But outside of the CFP, bowl games seem to have lost some importance. Is it possible they have slipped below the importance of a regular season game and into quasi-exhibition status? Players are skipping the games due to injury concerns, and many fan bases consider their bowl assignment to be a disappointment. But a bowl game has a national audience, and you can end your season with a postseason championship (of sorts).

Assume you end up 7-6 either way, would you trade a loss against Mizzou for a win against Auburn? Answer is not so obvious as some might think.

For a top prospect it doesn’t mean much vs the potential risk of being injured. But, most players will see it as national exposure, and one last chance to show scouts what they can do against a good opponent.

With the different networks and more games being on national TV, it doesn’t mean as much. It used to be a rare chance to see your favorite team on national TV. But, now you can see your favorite team pretty much every weekend unless they are in a smaller conference.

For Purdue it is a chance to play for a winning season. Sounds better to say Brohm has had a winning season every year he has been here. This year it is a chance to play preseason #10 loaded with talent and in what some consider the best conference. It gives Purdue a chance to say they went up against a traditional powerhouse in the SEC and grabbed a win. Brohm is 1-0 against OSU at Purdue. Would be cool to also be 1-0 against Auburn. I think a win over Auburn means more than the win over Arizona, but since Purdue hadn’t had a winning season in forever, that win over Arizona was special. Getting a New Years game would be the next step up. It is expected at this point. Locked in one of the best young coaches in college sports. Now we get to see the rewards. MB1 should drink in what it looks like to invest in your athletics. Great national exposure and should increase donations/interest into the school.

I don't think it would be going out on a limb to say a win would mean more to Purdue than Auburn.

Exactly. For Purdue this game is a huge opportunity. For Auburn it is a potential trap. Will be a very tough game to win if Auburn comes in fully motivated.

I am sure when Auburn pulled Purdue there was a lot of expletives mumbled. Purdue has played really well against some really good competition. If the team that played OSU showed up, Purdue could blow out Auburn. If the team that played Eastern michigan/Minnesota shows up, it could be blow out the other direction.

Great draw for Purdue. Terrible draw for Auburn. Purdue is likely the scariest 6-6 team with their offense.

The way the season went, as long as it doesn't snow or rain, we will do well.

I think the bowl win vs. Auburn is worth more than a regular season win vs. Mizzou at home, if both get you to a 7-6 record. Auburn has more national cache, and it helps set the stage for the next season, although the bowl win last year didn't help Purdue avoid an 0-3 start this year.

Agreed. Purdue has more motivation going into this game, I think. Auburn was expected to do much more this year than they did. More pressure on Malzahn. Brohm announcing he's staying also gives Purdue an extra bounce in their step.

I go with the bowl win people tend to remember who you beat in a bowl game whereas most people don't really remember much about the regular season other than the record and the fact we upset OSU
