Four Full seasons. But why stop at 5? Let’s look at 8!
That’s why it’s silly to pick an arbitrary cutoff, you always need context. But I’ll say this … since Underwood got his two seasons to rebuild Groce’s mess and finally got his guys in there (2019-20), Purdue and Illinois have easily been the two best programs overall, and they both appear to be in very stable and healthy spots with the coaching staffs they have in place.

If you look at the top 2 spots in the regular season standings and the top 2 in the BTT since then, you see more Purdue and Illini than anyone else, and our programs very easily have the best overall records, too.

2020 RS: WISC, MSU, UMD (all tied)
2020 BTT: N/A

2021 RS: MICH, ILL
2021 BTT: ILL, OSU

2022 RS: ILL, WISC, PUR
2022 BTT: IOWA, PUR

2023 RS: PUR, IND, NU
2023 BTT: PUR, PSU

2024 RS: PUR, ILL
2024 BTT: ILL, WISC

Yes for sure. Not debating that!

So far, looking like Illinois is better built this year (I hate admitting it 😂)

We have arguably more talent than the 2018-19 elite 8 team which won a share of the Big Ten title.
Overall collection of talent I could agree with that. We don’t haven’t a carsen type on our team but we do have a good system in place with solid players. I may be underestimating us but the blowout losses have me wondering how big ten play will go.

Speaking of IL, hows that kid from Lafayette doing who's mom likes to post on social media with bongs in the background?

DGL had been a spark plug off the bench. You….would em actually really like him. Even tho he’s smaller like smith, he attacks and can finish. Has a tenacity about him and a decent defender. He would have been a great second ball handler on this team with Smith.

Long way to go! We are one of the youngest teams in the country, and we will stumble here and there … plus Purdue has just had our frickin’ number lately. We have a very high ceiling and I think we are quite good, but we’ll have some inconsistencies. I think Purdue will stabilize and be near the top of the standings like always … tough non-conference schedule will pay dividends.

During the season last year, I thought his mom had been commenting about that he wasn't getting enough PT, so I assumed that he would move on. Seems to be a guy that likes to move around...but he stuck around and he looks like an important piece in their rotation. IL has some depth.

He’s the only one that stayed! Well him and Ty Rodgers (RS this year cuz he was going to get much PT)

Edit: wasn’t***

I think he'll be servicable for D, rebounding, etc., but he'll still be young, inexperienced. if Painter believes he has a NC shot next year, I think he has to get an experienced 5 and 1-2 other guys from the portal.
A 5, a guy who can play the 2 or 3 and a 1 who can handle it. Both guys that aren’t the 5 should be able to go get their own bucket.

Not sure I'd put too much faith in DJ being that big of an impact player next year. He's a lightweight big coming off a major leg injury with minimal college experience. Obviously hope I'm wrong, but I would temper expectations for him.
Nope. Pretty large expectations based on what we Saw. ;)
Hopefully 20 solid lbs heavier and that kid will make a difference.
He doesn't even need to do that much, it's freeing up Trey to go against 4's that wins us games.
But additional outside shooting is always a plus.
That it draws the other teams 5 out of the rebounding area isn't bad either.
That and his rim protection,
Doesn't need to put up impressive numbers anywhere to be the X factor.

Hopefully, you are being sarcastic - as we only SAW 26 minutes in real games. Alot of potential, but yes really only hopeful expectations at this time. Mostly hopeful he can make it through a full year next year with added strength.
Expectations probably driven more by what he did in USA BB than what we saw in preseason. Agree with OP that it would be great to hear that he’s put in 15 to 20 lbs of muscle by the end of March.

You must have seen him play more minutes than I did. How many did he play before he got injured?
A 7'4 guy coming off a major leg injury is always concerning.
I think he's talented and can do a lot of things well but I'm not sure I'd be relying on him to be the starting 5 if Painter thinks he has a FF team next year.

Him shooting 3s and knocking them doe prior to the game was good to see. Granted it was only shoot around.
We've yet to see Painter give one of his 7 footers the consistent green light from 3 (maybe Haarms a little bit) but having a 7 foot pick n pop has never been part of the offense. Yet.

didn't see any of the NU game. Quit watching Auburn out of frustration. Watched all of Bama.
Cmon man! It was a good one yesterday! Understand about auburn 😂

Burgess will have pick and pop ability. I don’t think painter doesn’t allow it, it just didn’t make sense for edey in pick and pop last year and the year before to shoot it because it was a lower % shot and take away from Zach offensive rebounding. This year, TKR isn’t great at shooting the 3. And prior to edey we haven’t really had anyone who could pick and pop or at least with the on ball screener.

DJ and RB have shown they can hit the 3 as 7 footers, so I assume that will help change the offense going forward next year and on.
