Big Ten - COTY

I think Gard deserved the award, but I love that Crean won. Time for that multi-year contract extension :).

Just make sure Painter stays at Purdue if Crean signs that extension.

:D

Being that Crean has finished higher than Painter 4 out of the last 5 years with 2 B1G titles, I can see why you're so elated Crean might be at IU for awhile.

Take to your board. It's IU fans who want him fired.

Could be wrong, but doesn't Painter have a winning record against Crean?

Be honest. You like crean because he kisses you in the mouth.

Honestly, yes Crean has had some success, but he should have had even more success with the talent that went through there. Overall, he has underachieved given the potential of his teams, and he is a just an embarrassingly strange guy. I think it is funny as hell that IU is likely to be stuck with him for even longer than assumed given this year's B1G championship and COTY honors. If you like him, please lobby your IU brethren to support keeping him around for a long, long time because it is so much fun to poke fun at his... idiosyncrasies.

Thanks for validating what all of us already knew about you tools:
All your blather about being a "blue blood"--- all the banner worship---is meaningless; what REALLY matters is how iu does, compared to Purdue.

Congrats to your phony spaz of a coach... He truly is a gift that keeps on giving

Gard was the best coach in the big ten, big hill to climb, and he did it with flying colors. good for him. even overcame his cheating mentor. never have an affair with a chick that has vengeance on her agenda.

"Gard was the best coach in the big ten"...how do you reconcile that statement with the fact that the league coaches voted Crean as COTY? Are all of the coaches that misguided?

All of the league coaches are happier if the Clapper stays for a long time than if Gard does. Simple to understand why they voted the way they did.

IMO Crean did a pretty good job at IU this year. They won the BIG outright and he did it while fighting injuries to his leading scorer and a freshman at center.
IU's schedule stacked up remarkably well for them but he still won the league outright.
Wiscy has been to back to back final fours and they finished 6th in the league. He will do a good job at Wiscy but Crean deserves the award.

That is easy to say, but in reality he has done a great job. IU fans and the rest of the nation recognizes this. I was very disappointed in him early on, but what a turnaround.
If I had CMP, I wouldn't throw rocks..

Absolutely...two conference titles in the past four years really supports your position. Just out of curiosity, how many titles does Painter have in the last four years?

Yep, he's so successful he took a team with 2 lotto picks and ranked #1 in the country for most of the year and couldn't get them out of the sweet 16. That's some coaching for you.

I'm not going to complain about Crean winning it. It's hard to look the other way when his team won the league by 2 games. That said, big things were expected out of the Hoosiers this year.

What Greg Gard did in what most people figured was a rebuilding year at Wisconsin was pretty special, too.

I vote for whomever is the Wisconsin coach. We no longer have to watch Bo whine and cry from the opening tip till the end of the game!
Gard didn't politicize the award while Crean did. Crean is a pile of festering dog dung, a spaz, and other things. Gard, with limited talent did a far better job....taking over DURING the season than Crean did.

Agree on both.

Crean deserved the award. He won the BIG by 2 games, with his leading scorer out of action, a freshman center, and with 2 other post players (one a starter last year) dismissed this summer. He beat the teams he had to beat to win the BIG.

As for Gard, he had an easier schedule than Crean, almost no injury issues, and did not come close to winning the BIG. As much as I dislike the guy, Crean deserved the award.

Now, here is the question. Last year Crean was infamous for weird substitutions, lack of defense, and undisciplined play. In fact that was his MO for all the time he has been at IU. So, who changed those team characturistics? Was it Crean, suddenly becoming the coach he dreamed he was? Is there a really good assistant coach on the sidelines that has changed the playing style and culture of the IU team? How did this team suddenly change characture?

The team changed when a freshman big stepped up and got in the face of the chosen baby bear after the collapse in Hawaii. He asserted himself and took a lot of control of the team much like CZ and VO did a few years ago. I'm hoping he jumps to the league. With BooBoo gone if Bryant leaves and they get Jack 'Em Up James back from injury we'll find out just what kind of changes the brilliant coach made.

Tim Buckley is a very good assistant. He was a good X an o coach with Ball State but couldn't recruit a lick and got fired. Crean took him back in an instant.

Maybe Perfect Storm? Per Dan D, Judsen was hired for his defense strategies. Maybe Crean decided to open up to his assistants? Great question.

I've always thought Crean was an egomaniac, maybe he finally learned something and listened to another coach... Honestly, I put a lot of stock in the way Dickie V raked him over the coals during the Duke game. Perhaps that was the thing that snapped him into reality. What ever it was, I'm glad it happened. It's also been mentioned that he laid off the running in late season practice, something he'd never done.

Some people are just slow learners.. ;)

What is "characture" and what are "characturistics?" Anyway...I think I know what you mean.

I think Coach Crean won the Big 10 in 2013 as well. He's been to the Final Four. He is the first Indiana coach in 33 years to win the Big 10 twice outright in a four year period. He just won the Big 10 by a two game margin. He just was named AP coach of the year. He has the 16th best recruiting class in the country coming in next year (as opposed to his in-state counterpart's class that is ranked 91st).

Among other things.

didn't know that's where he came from. Major reduction in salary. wonder why he didn't go for a pedestrian job where he could make close to what he made at BSU like let's say Bowling Green State or Central Michigan? I assume he's probably just topping 100K but the benefits are probably pretty good , like health insurance is probably not a Health Savings Account (HSA), it's probably full coverage and maybe even a company car (but i doubt it).

He was Crean's lead assistant at Marquette when he was hired at Ball State. He if I can remember correctly, took a pay cut to come to BSU in hopes of using it as a stepping stone to a major job. Took over a very talented team from Ray McCallum and did well but failed to produce on the recruiting trail. He actually got a huge raise when he returned as an assistant at IU. Tim is a great guy and a very good coach which works well with Crean who does recruit well, although Morgan and Anoby were supposedly guys Tim found, but that's just a rumor. In any event it's easier to recruit to IU than Ball State.

I think we have covered most of these Tom Crean "credits" before, but if it makes you feel better, feel free to list them again in your post. Seems redundant though. I guess it feels good to bang your chest on your rival's board. DO it now, before you face Purdue in the BIG Tournament. I might note that for IU, the 2016 class is critical. Where was the Yogi class rated 4 years ago? For your sake, seems like 2016 would need to be in the same range (16th).

EDIT: I just checked. Your 2012 class was ranked 11th. Hum... looks like you might be going downhill? Of course, that was Yogi, Peria, Jurkin and Hollowell. This alone shows you how much a crap shoot recruiting is.

As for your in-state rival, 2016 is not an important class. We are watching the 2017 much more closely than 2016. Our team next year is pretty well set, and will be very good. I expect IU to have a bit of a fall off for the 2016/2017 season. You guys will miss Yogi more than we will miss AJ, IMHO.

As long as IU fans continue to post here that won't be the dumbest post. Some of you have reached a level of dumbness that is unrivaled on any fan board. Sadly the evidence of those is often quickly removed. I'm sure IUT would say something similar on the Hoosier free board about Boiler fans.

For the record, Matt Painter is a better all-around coach than clappa-tan. If you had to choose between them to start a new program as an AD, be honest and tell me who you would choose. It can only be between Painter and Crean.

Yes, Tom Crean did make the FF, but not with IU. And when he did make it, his team suffered the largest loss ever in a Final Four contest. The man is dumber than a dead possum with a yellow paint stripe and you know it.

I think it's funny how all of the IU fans were bitching at Boiler fans for throwing up that we had the most B1G titles. They only cared about national championships. Now that they won the B1G they are gloating. I just find it funny. I guess they truly do care about B1G championships.

He's not the brightest tool in the shed, that's for sure. Can't get IU to a final four to save his life. I think Bobby Knight did it in like 3rd or 4th season or something like that. His command of defense is deplorable. His capability to understand what is happening on the court with regard to adjustments is downright non-existent. In coaching clinics, they talk about the Crean vs. Boehiem game where IU went against Syracuse in the sweet 16 first game vs. the vaunted Boehiem zone as far as what NOT TO DO against a zone, lol. I thought that was a pretty defining chapter in the "book according to Crean", ROTFL. That is pretty telling of how he is viewed by his peers.

Then why does Painter keep finishing behind Crean in the standings and on the recruiting trail?

;)

Because it's IU. That's why. Crean can thank the previous coaches for making it so easy for him to recruit to IU. Put Crean at a different school and no way he brings in the same recruits.
