Went to see our first two commitments play in the first two weeks of the high school season -- George Karlaftis at West Lafayette and Chase Triplett at Michigan City -- and both are fun to watch.

Both stand out in their crowds, both draw extra attention from opponents, and both make plays anyway. Both routinely fought off multiple blocks to make tackles. Both had sacks. George batted passes, and Chase ran down a fast quarterback. Alignments differed. George was shifted to spots all across the front, while Chase was always in place, down at left end.

Both games were similar, too, with the hometown-hero teams both looking like they were about to be blown out by bigger and faster foes, both falling behind early by two touchdowns, then both rallying with inspired comebacks to take late leads. The outcomes differed. George and West Lafayette’s 3A Red Devils ended a 65-year wait and beat 6A Lafayette Jeff, 38-29, but Chase and 5A Michigan City lost on a fourth-and-11 pass on the last play of overtime against Illinois powerhouse Homewood-Flossmoor, 33-30. Gut buster for the Wolves. But there’s lots to like about both defenders and their prep teammates.
