Painter is going nowhere, anytime soon, for at least 3 years, maybe longer depending on Football.

In the meantime, one way to improve recruiting would be to add a stud recruiter to the coaching staff. I submit the name Frank Kendrick. Have him recruit Indy, FW, the Region, and maybe a little bit into Chicago.

The same Frank that put PU & Keady on probation in the 90s?

There seems to be a thought out there that he might have been a fall guy for that and it wasn't entirely his fault. Even so, we're 20 years removed. If they deem him worthy of a position somewhere down the line, I won't be critical of it. For mistakes of that nature, a second chance is often warranted and I think 20 years is more than enough time to have earned it if they want him.

I seriously doubt PU admin would hire him after those allegations. But in this world of athletics, who knows.

Painter will be here unless HE wants to EVER move on.

Likely that he'll retire from this place.

Trust in Painter ??????????????????

For giving a kid that was stranded at Mackey in the rain and had already committed to another school and that PU had never recruited, a ride to his hotel.

The Clay deal was all lies. Clay proved that over the next few years. He disliked PU and did what he could to hurt them ...

Sorry, did not mean to send 3x :)

Per article, it's a little more than that. Unless you are saying Luther Clay lied.

I am clearly saying that. Frank was a very great giver and cared a LOT about kids. That made him a great recruiter. He did his best to help Clay get through a tough time. Clay thought he got treated poorly by the coaches ....

He went on to great success as a Ram

I may not know everything but arranging a $4,000 loan and giving a recruit a ride doesn't seem that terrible to me in an age where players are given grades for nonexistent classes and are provided escorts (I guess a different type of ride) on their recruiting visits. His biggest error seemed to be encouraging someone to lie to the NCAA which is significant but if Purdue wanted to bring him back into the fold after 20 years and the NCAA penalties have passed then I'd have no big ethical issues with it.

I doubt we ever have to worry about that question. It took a long enough time for him to be welcomed back at this point he probably has no interest in coaching too.

Sampson only sent "texts" too but I'm not naive enough to believe that.

Kendrick did more for PU basketball than anyone I can think of. Maybe A.C. Eldridge ... he worked tirelessly and sold PU with a passion that no one has ever had afterward. He loved the kids. He loved PU. He recruited more great players than anyone else ever.

He only wanted to do what was right for two kids. And they both backfired and PU didn't have his back. They kicked him to the curb. The pain he felt for not doing anything he thought was wrong was intense. There is a LOT to this story ... much of which most don't know.

And by the way, Porter's Mom wanted to move here for months so she could watch Porter. She finally was able to move to Indy so she had a decent job which she couldn't find in Lafayette. She happened to rent from a MSU grad and somehow Frank got implicated in stupid rumors ... the Indy businessman owned many apartments, she needed an apartment.

Same can be said for every other program who bends the rules. I'm not judging. This a PU board, so why would I try to sell you on him being a bad guy. I have no idea what happened but I've heard other stories from a former PU player and read what was stated on CBS, Indy Star & Chicago tribune when it was released. But what actually happened, i have no idea. It's part of college athletics unfortunately, as every program tries to toe the line. My point was that I don't see PU bringing back a coach who bent rules per the NCAA, while at PU. Nothing more, nothing less.

OK. I contend that until Clay became unhappy, there were no rules bent ... other than a ride during a non-contact period ... to a kid who was committed elsewhere and never recruited by PU. Clay was asked to lie after he had started to lie about the loan to be disruptive... but I respect your thoughts. It was a long time ago. But the negative effects are probably still being felt. Passion is something that is hard to replace.

At times, loyalty and appreciation can be expressed even in bad situations. I would be curious what player would disagree with what I said ... that would be interesting, but long past important.

This happens all the time unfortunately, but with social media, more and more is exposed every year. Even with Social media, we probably only know about 5% of these cases.

There is a TON that most never know about players and emotions and coaches interactions and trying to be a good person within the NCAA rules. Read Tarkanians book where he talks about having his players over for Sunday dinner so they could eat when the dorms were closed and his story about the player who wanted to call his Mom who was dying and Tarkanian had to choose whether to break a rule to let him use his phone to call his Mom. Interesting stuff. All I know is that Frank loved PU and sold that with all the passion that was within him ... until that fateful day ...

Lol Tark was the best. (At cheating) I know Homer Drew was relentless. I personally know a former MR BB here in IN, and he said Homer would stalk his girlfriend. Homer called her when he would not return Homer's calls. Lol

Why do you keep saying it was a kid who committed elsewhere and wasn't recruited by Purdue? It was Jamaal Davis. He committed and played for Purdue.

The problem with Tark is that he recruited kids off the LA playgrounds ... no money, no family, no support, and really did try to help them, but they needed SO MUCH and the rules limited what they can do. The PU guys who's family aren't well off run out of their stipend before the end of the month ...

OK, It looks like you are right and that the ride occurred the day after he had committed to PU ...

I was shocked when I read about Greg Anthony and sorry my mind is forgetting the 2nd guy... They were actually Schollars opposed to the stereotype that the entire class were thugs. It was not Johnson or Augman. Anyway, its amazing what is portrayed vs the reality behind the scenes. Like Duke hoops, in the past decade, how many allegations from Coery Megatti (sp?) taking cash, the Tiffany jewelry case, Soloman allegedly raped a female Duke hooper and a few more we could add. The Darlings are truly Devils.

Homer Drew!! I used to think he was a good guy and Coach....since then I've heard stories from numerous
people/players. Sounds like Scott has learned well from dad. I do think Bryce is honest though.

Hell, the local HS coach does that for 7th and 8th graders that go to other schools. Especially Catholic schools. Tiller knew who every recruit's GF was and her contact info.

I know Painter is the coach and I'm not suggesting firing him... But... Bryce Drew could be a guy PU fans should keep an eye on. I think he loves coaching in IN. He is an Icon in the state too. (The shot) He has a huge upside and I think he could recruit the state very well and do it the right way opposed to his big brother.

Then what? He's been given more money, for both he and staff, as well as upgraded facilities. Time to produce something.

Are you speaking of Painter?
I'll be honest, I don't really have an opinion about firing him. I see both sides in that... With the right roster, he can win and possible win big as in an E8 or maybe F4. I know he's only had 2 great opportunities at this point with some bad luck in Hummel. I also see those who are frustrated at this point with some recruiting misses and the 4 year NCAA winless streak. Should he be fired? I really don't know cause I'm not attached to the program and don't know the PU fans expectations. I do believe the new AD will have patience with CMP but CMP will need to deliver. After all, the new AD has admitted in the past that he is a basketball guy.

Anderson Hunt, maybe? Although, I think he sat out a year for academic issues.

Other starter was George Ackles.

Tark was no saint, but I do think he was trying to help his players for the most part. Either way, the NCAA clearly had an axe to grind with him.

I think it might have been Ackles. Thank you sir.
