Yeah very weird timing, seems like maybe there's a health concern or something. Just speculating, it's just odd. I don't remember when in the offseason Wright retired but don't think it was close to the start of the season. He’s one of the good ones. There has to be a lot more to the story than I’ve heard, given the timing after the start of practice. He and Jay Wright were two of my favorites and both got out young.
The list of the Non-Scumbags/Cheaters with a title is even shorter…Only 6 active coaches with a title now.
Bill Self
John Calipari
Dan Hurley
Tom Izzo
Scott Drew
Rick Pitino
That's a pretty short list.
I think this, like with Wright, are coaches who are tired of dealing with transfer pool and NIL. Players asking first how much money they will make, wanting guarantees etc. No rules in place and no governing body with any clout. They just don't want to play the game any more.Dick Bennett did a similar retirement when he left Wisconsin. Maybe it is his way of passing on the baton to a worthy assistant. Tony is only 55 so I'd imagine he'll coach somewhere else in a couple years.
