I was lying awake last night pondering if Basil would have made any difference in the Kansas game. He had the energy but lost a step from last season. Considering he was considered the best "athlete" on the team, figured it worth the debate. Not trying to start anything just a truly curious question.

I think Basil would have gone for 35 and shutdown Jackson to 6 pts leading us to a 10 point win. Seriously I get your point with him being somewhat athletic and would have helped some, not much. We have athletes coming in program next year so think we are better situated going forward.

Had he stayed in shape and improved his game maybe. Any idea what did him in with MP? I know he already had one strike but never read what the second one was.

Unfortunately, I don't think it would have made a difference. Defensively, he could have helped us some, but unless he was capable of scoring 20 plus points in that game, it wouldn't have changed the outcome, just closed the gap a little. I always thought Basil had the potential to develop, but for whatever reason it just never happened. I hope he gets to a good place in his life. I am often reminded of the Steve Prefontaine quote that many athletes today should remember, "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift".

I dont think Basil would have helped much.It is a shame that so many guys have flamed out in recent years, like Smotherman,Stephens,Scott, and Jay Simpson had a bad heart.Oh,well, life goes on.

Funny. I had the same thought a couple of days ago. I think he would have helped some but we'd still have lost big, IMHO. We have to find a way to keep our best athletes happy and not transferring. Basil came through a few times over his years and after red shirting for the better of the team, mid way thru his Boiler career, he couldn't have been all bad. Nice post. Glad you brought it up.

I like that quote...said similar things but not that wording. Thanks!

He likely would have spent some time with the Kansas team before the game and shared his stash thereby slowing down their team and giving us an assist.

The only thing Basil did was commit early and give us no chance to get Hayes. Now if that doesn't make you shake your head, I don't know what will.

his lack of commitment let the program down, if he would have progressed like he should have , he would have been playing more than 7 min. a game and prolly would have beaten some teams we should have thus having a better record, then getting a higher seed, then prolly never would have faced KU .

Yes but he didn't and Nigel Hayes did.

My best guess would be that he failed a random drug test. That might have been coupled with either being late for some practices/team bus/charter plane or the coaching staff not liking his effort or attitude in some of the practices.

Back to the OP, I think he could have helped some (particularly defending some of those alley-oops that Kansas converted) but if you just add him and not change anything else about how Purdue played this past Thursday, it still wouldn't have been enough to beat Kansas.

He made his choices....many wrong. It makes no sense to do what if's about his play.

Would he have made a difference? Yep. Could've lost by 40.

Never heard either but I bet that the public is always one or two strikes behind the real count. I don't think he would have mattered either.

It wouldn't have mattered if he was still on the team.

Problem was he put on too much weight and never seemed to get the spark of quickness we were all hoping for.

I liked Basil because of his energy and just always seemed to have fun. The problem was not focusing and making himself better.

He could have been an amazing onball defender with his quickness. Sadly he never put in the effort to get there

once again, if we had him fully engaged, the whole chain of events would have been different and probably would have never faced Kansas.

" ... if we had him full engaged." In other words, the motivator with Basil had to be somebody else, not him?

A.J. was that way too. Kids like Biggie bring you the drive from within.

Too much of the latter can cause problems too, but they are the players I like best.

Sad story about Basil, a poster said he saw Basil in Follets, right after the IU game, when Purdue locked up the BIG.
Can't help but feel for the kid. I guess you make your own bed though.

He would have made a difference at the pregame buffet.
