It's a decade long problem, but this year more than ever CP has to change his Defensive Rules.

Purdue always chases the ball screen and when things go bad, one of 3 things happen:
  1. Wing Helps - Ball handler passes to wing for catch and shoot 3 (high percentage shot).
  2. Big Man Helps - As was the case last night, Haas and Swanigan had 3 fouls called on them when the ball handler went right at them (high likelihood of foul).
  3. No Help - Ball handler (read Josh Hart) gets a layup at the rim.
Our big men will be in foul trouble all season unless Painter starts having his guards go under screens. There is one really reliable shooter off the double and he plays for Golden State. Purdue defends every ball screen like they are guarding Curry.

Go under the screen, if the ball handler makes a 16' pull up jump shot you can live with that. We can play with an already thin front court in foul trouble all year.

ya i don't understand the strategy. nba players aren't chasing guys around screen. They zone the screen and play a direction and push the ball handler towards half court. If the guy pulls up, oh well, it's the lowest percentage outcome.

I'm with both of you. If a team can consistently hit the pull up jumper than you live (die) with that. I like that much better than drawing fouls on our bigs or getting to the rim uncontested. There just aren't that many college teams that are going to kill you with mid-range jumpers. There are far more that have the athletes to get into the paint and cause us problems.

I don't think you play it the same way all game long but agree that we need have our guards go under the screen more because that pull-up jumper is usually better than a lay-up, open 3, or a foul on Haas/Swanigan.
