B1G Award Show Starting Now....

Mathias, Happ, Lynch, Law, and Showalter....all defense.

Lynch came on strong and named DPOY...second in the country in blocks this year.....well done.

Also, who would have guessed Dakota Mathias as all-defense prior to this season.....worked his you-know-what off....."Cowboy" hats off to him....congrats, DM!

We all love to see blocks....They're just sexy but would be interested in seeing the stats on Mathias's shutdown defense on all are the best shooters in the B1G versus Lynch's blocks... I'll take the Midwestern Cowboy any day.

Pitino gets COY....not a big surprise, either. Would like to see the final results on that.
I really haven't been overly impressed with Pitino. I think this award is more a function of how little they accomplished lay year. He has a very talented team - one that other coaches would do much more with.

Yep, they did away with Third-Team and Honorable Mention picks (at least for the broadcast). I missed the beginning of the show at 5 (ET).

thanks!

I believe one of either VE or Mathias should have gotten a third-team selection over either Jordan Murphy, Nigel Hayes, or Scottie Lindsey. Oh well, at the end of the day, it's about who's the best team.

Boiler Up

VE did get third team in media selections. I updated my post, Nage to include Media.

It's a Monday.

that did surprise me..just didn't think a coach finishing that far down would get it. When they played Purdue I thought they had some talent then

I hear you TJ, but as others have said, when you have that big of a turnaround, hard to ignore Only eight wins (2 in conference) last year. Two more wins, and they will tie the biggest turnaround in one season in conference history (for total number of wins), IIRC.

I assume his peers voted this? No matter, he won and obviously some think he was deserving. I'd much rather be the fan of the team that wins than the coach that wins...just thought they would be the same this year. Purdue came a long way as well...last three years ago with steady improvement. Purdue was not ignored...Biggie POTY, Vince 3rd team...hope it was high third and Dakota all defense. I'm not sure Dakota didn't effect the other teams more often than the bigs and blocks...

I know that in high school conferences...sometimes coaches would vote for someone that they knew would not get a particular position just so their player moved up...not an ethical thing to do and will assume until proven otherwise that does NOT go on...even with Crean. :)

So, according to the coaches, first placed Purdue has 1 All BIG selection while third placed Wisconsin has three, and fourth and fifth placed Northwestern and Minny each has two?

Sounds a bit dumb, to be honest

At first I thought the same thing. But it's also a tribute to how good a TEAM this is. Top 5 nationally in assists speaks to selfless play.

I don't want to be too negative, and I'm extremely happy for Biggie, who deserves this award and much more. But the very nature of awards--which, admittedly, can benefit Purdue just as it can benefit any other team--really irks me.

1. Pitino did a great job this year.
2. Pitino did a really bad job last year by any measure.

1. Painter did a great job this year.
2. Painter did a really good job last year.

The fact that the respective 2s are the reason why Pitino won COY this year is, objectively speaking, pretty absurd. You're not just rewarding improvement; you're rewarding the crappy past performance that created the room for improvement.

But like I said, this is how awards work. Next year, the most likely coaches to win COY are the ones whose teams will be seeded eleven-through-fourteen this weekend at the BTT. Or the coach whose team had the most perceived graduation losses. IMO, the Coach of the Year should be the one who did the best job the year of the award. If not, why not change the name?

Just a thought.

That's because Matt is not COTY! :) It all goes together when you make your results fit your hunches. Did I ever tell you about NCAA Pairings? :)
