Athleticism

Saw these guys at the WUG exhibition game at Carmel HS and during pregame warm ups it was apparent that they possess a level of athleticism that has been missing- not just one individual but all 3 - Wheeler, Ewing and Eastern. Wheeler showed exceptional explosiveness but Ewing and Eastern also gifted. Eastern has BIG10 build already and ridiculously quick with ball as he can blow by defenders - crazy at 6'-6", not sure I've seen any Boiler with that combo of size and quickness with the ball (Barlow was athletic but didn't have this kind of ball handling quickness)

I disagree on Barlow. He was a 6'5 guy with really good handles, quickness and athleticism. He didn't have handles like Carsen, but he was certainly above average in terms of breaking down a D and getting to the rim.

Also, I don't put too much stock in what I see guys do during warmups. Sure, it's nice to see them throw down some monster dunks when there's no D and they don't have to do anything, but I like to see guys who can make quick decisions and are also good athletes. Jacob Lawson was a great athlete but always seemed a step slow on the play.

In due time you will see. I've been in there practices I watch some of there games at WUG they are as advertised and it's not just about them dunking but it's all about how all of them bring something to this team they didn't have last season athleticism and quickness and a much deeper bench that will help this team of seniors hopefully get another ring and a national championship. By they way my son has all of what was described of him and when season begins he will be utilized in a way you haven't seen b4. What I no is he really good and he is ready for that big stage.

From what I have seen and heard about them, Eastern, Wheeler, and Haarms all seem to have very high ceilings, perhaps not this season, but within the next few years. Dowuana is another player who might just be scratching the surface of his potential. Throw in Sasha, Hunter, and Williams, all whom I think can be very good, and I am looking forward to seeing the 17/18 classes develop and come together over the next 4 years.

Gotta agree with his mom - Nojel has a very rare combo of size and quickness and especially with the ball. I saw Barlow plenty and I am telling you now that Nojel is beyond what Kelsey could do with the ball already!

Hey Bonefish! - don't you know never to disagree with a mom? Seriously, I saw Barlow plenty and Nojel is bigger and quicker with the ball - not just warm ups - he blew by team Canada defenders (they were a decently athletic team). You will see soon. As for Wheeler and Ewing, their ability to defend will dictate playing time but over time their athleticism will be seen (not just in warm ups)

This class won't need 4 years they are gonna be good this season some will develop a little faster than others but collectively this class and team next season will be very deep I'm telling you. Again season around the corner and this class painter brought in has a 2 month advantage that will pay dividends as season plays out. As for my son NBA personel is on his radar right now why 6"7 223 pound PG that is as a versatile as they come with high bball IQ an elite passer can guard and play 4 positions no NBA scout gonna over look that. All I'm saying this team is gonna be good and this class they brought in will help this team this season.

How long will we get to enjoy your sons career in the Gold and Black? Is there a timeframe in mind?

I'm no expert on Nojel, but from what I saw in Taipei, he's very good now with the potential to be great. I think that he'll be a key contributor this year, but I would expect him to improve greatly year to year as long as he plays for Matt Painter.

If what you are saying is enjoy him now because he will be in the NBA before long, I'd agree that it won't surprise me if he leaves early.

I wasn't referencing Eastern specifically. In fact, I'll single him out as one of those guys who in actual games, already looked ready to contribute quality minutes when the season starts. I also agree he's bigger (6'6, 220...put on 30 pounds, give him a number 55 jersey and put him at D-end!) and faster than Barlow, but KB was a really good athlete and baller.
What I was referencing is guys who do high-light reel dunks during warmups but then can't get off the bench during games because they haven't learned how to use their great athleticism in game situations and coach doesn't trust them. Not saying this is the case with our guys, but time will tell.

Nope no timeline if he plays well and do what he is capable of doing he could play his way into conversation of being viewed as NBA prospect. I'm not pushing him or putting any pressure on him all I'm saying with his size at that position it's gonna be hard for a GM to overlook him. He works hard on his game every bit of it daily to get better and all that started when he was 10 years old when this guy who saw my son and wanted to train him and told me he saw something in him and than dropped a bomb on me and said he will be a PG in the future. My son from that trainer took his words to heart got in the gym and transformed his game from playing mostly the forward spot to being taught how to play PG as well as other positions bcuz the trainer who is 5"7 PG himself didn't no how tall Nojel will get so he wanted to make sure if he stopped growing he will be prepared to play that position and to this date he stills train my son and through gods graces he blessed him with 6"7 size and the mind to match to understand the game that he will be hard to overlook. If it's Gods will he sees my son in the NBA sooner than later than only time will tell. He came to purdue to get an education we will stick to that plan.

He really is a great kid if u meet him u will see how humble and respectable he is.
Thank you. I look forward to watching him play. I hope nothing but the best for him and I agree with you, with his size and ability, he won't be ignored.

I hope you are right. I've been waiting for an athletic Purdue team like this for over 40 years. The players look swole, they can jump, and can shoot. I'm looking forward to a very good year.

If you don't believe in Painter after he wins the big ten without one of the top recruiting classes in the previous years then go find another team. He can Coach and does a great job recruiting considering its in a non metropolitan area.

I'm just going to point this out. You are one of the guys always complaining about Purdue's slow, unathletic players. Someone posts a story about the new athleticism on the team and your first response is to go negative.

Eastern seems to be pretty athletic, but Purdue hasn't had a guard in the Matt Painter era more athletic than Barlow. Can't wait for basketball to start! Boiler up!

The big 10 was really bad last year. Michigan State and Indiana had a bunch of injuries. No team got a high seed or made it past the Sweet 16. Also I think Purdue had a pretty easy big 10 schedule not having to go to Wisconsin. Last year's big 10 title means nothing besides a pretty banner on the wall. This year's team is built for great things so if Painter can't get it done he needs to go.

Give me a break. You have lost any ounce of credibility you thought you had. I mean you can't be serious with this post right? It hast to be made as a joke because no one in their right mind would post something so ridiculous.

Thank God you aren't in charge, you would ruin our program in a day and would make Tom Crean look like Stephen Hawking.

Edit: And to cross-post from another thread, here is a chart of coaches that are 'better' than Painter. Please tell us who would come to Purdue from this list and anyone else wouldn't be an upgrade at all.

Kelsey Barlow was a freak of nature athletic wise. He could have easily played in the NBA if he wasn't a basket case. He was one of my favorite players dude can jump out the gym.
Honestly I have no idea who that guy is and if there are some comparisons athletically I can go with that but my son was never known especially up until his junior jr for his athleticism but what he was known for was everything else basketball wise. His IQ, skills passing etc now however he is more explosive and athletic something he's worked on since junior year. Teams needs athletes and teams needs skilled players now my son has both and wait till you see him really play you will see both. Probably one good reason he wasn't athletic back as a freshman bcuz he had serious growing pains by end of sophomore year he was 6"3 by end f junior jr he was 6"6 and probably still growing. Technically he should be a senior in HS bcuz of his age just turning 18 several months ago. As long as he do his job on that court is all that matters to me

Here is one of Kelsey's best moments as a Boiler

Yawn...

Pitino is available.

The only three appreciatively higher tourney entry percentages are Roy Williams (academic cheater), Tom Izzo (a few player issues) and Mark Few (an easier conference).

The big 10 is going to be really tough this year. I think it's the best conference no question. A lot of final 4 contenders. If we go back to back with big 10 banners now that will be impressive.

Just because we didn't play Wisconsin, its not like IU who didn't play 3 of the top contenders the previous year. This years team is not better, they might be as good if they can rebound, and that's not looking good "Gold Metal game". Sounds like you need to keep being a IU fan.

What's your point? Because IU played an easy big 10 schedule and won the big 10 by 2 games doesn't mean we couldn't do the exact same thing the very next year? Sheesh. Neither of those is very impressive that's why we should go back to back to prove it wasn't a fluke. This year's team is better than last year's so hopefully they can do it.

The 5 Big Ten teams that Purdue played twice had a combined conference record of 43-47.

The 8 Big Ten teams that Purdue played once had a combined conference record of 69-75.

Seems pretty even to me. (The reason that both groups had losing records is that Purdue was +10 in the win column at 14-4).

Wisconsin and Michigan were definitely the best teams besides Purdue. They both were 1 basket away from the Elite 8. We only played them once each. Wisconsin at home. That's an easy schedule.

Actually, Michigan wasn’t very good until late in the season when Purdue happened to play them.

Purdue played most teams once. That’s how the schedule works.

They are good you will see 1 game they didn't rebound bcuz they were tired 8 games in 10 days you tell me how your legs will fill. Also I if you watched the game painter really only played 8 players as a matter of fact the freshman didnt play much the whole trip especially the last 2 games that were much more competitive only played minutes when they blew out some of those teams. This team is really good you might not think so and that's your opinion but my opinion they will compete for a big 10 championship and NCAA Championship

Every game is crucial, but Purdue will compete for the Big championship and that championship will probably be decided at MSU...for whoever wins THAT game

You're awful good at making excuses. Michigan scored 50 points in the 1st half when they played UCLA early. I don't think UCLA would agree they were easy. We got swept by Michigan. We weren't as good as them. That's why they won the conference tournament. How many times has Painter won the conference tournament? Up to this point he's been a terrible coach when the games really matter.
