As much as I love Biggie...

he has to be one of the worst defenders I've seen wear a Purdue uniform.

4, he has his limitations, but you don't set the single-season school record for rebounds if you can't defend.....sometimes, he protects the foul situation, which is unfortunate. Not his best today or against Penn State, but he is the leading candidate for conference POY and in the discussion for NPOY. I think he's in a slight slump on that end and maybe frustrated, IMO. It's a long season, and he has worked his ass off......I love his effort and dedication, and the way he represents my alma mater.

Is it frustrating to see the Boilers lose like that? sure, but I hope it's not coloring your view. However, you're entitled to your opinion....I very much disagree with it.

Just my 2 cents but the stories of Biggie working out close to an hour after games would concern me this late in the season. I know these are young guys and recover quickly but heading down the stretch and into tournament time I would allow for a little more recovery time to get bounce back in legs. I thought he looked a little slow the last couple games. Again just my 2 cents.

Your 2 cents are are about as worthless as tits on a boar

He couldn't guard Wagner... CMP said in his post game he should have had Vince on him instead. They made the change at the half. He went for 22 on Biggie and Haas and 2 on Vince. Biggie is a great player and even better rebounder, but his D is poor. I think your correct in that he's trying to stay out of foul trouble, but none the less, he doesn't guard.

I agree with Lionheart1. He raises a valid concern.
Probably some of it, but a lot of times, he's out of position. One play specifically when we were starting to come back, he left his man to trap in the corner and left Williams wide open under the basket for a dunk. The announcer even commented he wasn't sure why Biggie would do that.

What is more concerning than his D is his TO's. He needs to realize that he cannot create off the dribble and set himself up down low where he is very, very good at finishing. I just wonder if his lack of handles could lower his NBA draft status enough to keep him around another year???

Exactly... As soon as the double comes, he should pass it. He usually holds it for about 3 seconds then tries to dribble.

I actually think a lot of the time he holds it hoping to find a cutter/slasher to dish it to which we really don't have on the team. Then I think he is trying to find an open man for a 3 and if the guards are standing he is reluctant to make the basic pass back out.

Or his lack of lateral quickness

Moe Wagner is probably one of the top players in the history of the sport. Things will get easier when he only has to guard NBA players. Plus the NBA doesn't have athletes who can defend the way they do in college, so the turnovers will fix themselves.

Oh, I watched Bill Walton call a game so that's how I know so much about basketball.

OP is correct. He is not good defensively. Thankfully, not everyone goes at him like they should.

I won't comment on his defense. However, has anyone else noticed he seems to be pressing more in the last 2 to 3 games? He does not seem to let his game come to him like he did earlier in the season. Could it be the additional pressure from being a NPOY candidate or trying to impress the NBA too much right now?
There have been rebounds that his teammates actually should have had or did have and he took it from them. His shots seem to be getting rushed more or should not have been taken. Haas is actually playing better right now than what he is playing.
With the loss, hopefully we get this figured out as a team. I cannot think of a better team to do that against than IU at home on Tuesday.

He's not a great defender, but I wonder how much of that is due to not wanting to foul out. I suspect it's about 90% of it. He wants to be in the game playing at all times , you can't grab rebounds sitting on the bench with 3 fouls in the first half.

I watch and can almost see that's what's going on

I don't think Biggie is a shutdown defender, but wow, he's not that bad. I'm more worried about how he deals with the double that collapses on him and he seems to lack the capacity to decide what to do. Defenses are starting to do this a lot now. Tape is showing he doesn't have the composure to demonstrate a consistent response to a double in the post. And, this is highlighted in a last possession scenario. He must figure this out. He's our best player. He's supposed to be our leader.

The issue I have is that it took an entire half for CMP to make a change. I thought he really mismanaged the first half yesterday...in a similar fashion to a lot of the frustrating losses.

That's obviously what's going on. They have no depth outside of guards so he will play soft on defense at times to avoid foul trouble at all cost. Pretty easy to understand.

I've been defending Biggie's defense all season with this logic. I think it holds true for his post defense. However, I don't think he is a good perimeter defender regardless of effort or foul situation. He isn't fast twitch. He and Haas were often in problem situations yesterday guarding the quick and skilled Wagner on the perimeter. Surprised Painter waited so long to put the post defender on shorty shorts.

I agree. I'm shocked how little defenses have done this. Granted, a lot of teams don't have the full personnel to counter what Purdue has to throw at you. People look to talk about how great Swanigan has played, but at the same time his teammates have really opened things up for him. Swanigan still has turnover issues and it's shown big time the last couple games.

I agree. Biggie is devastating when he catches the ball on the block. But he's been less effective when catching it four or five feet away from the block and then having to make several moves to get to the basket. It allows the defense time to crash in on him, and they are often able to force a turnover or an awkward shot.

He is a Big Man, hopefully the S & C coaches are monitoring his workout regimen, played 29 games so far, a little more rest and a little less treadmill, hopefully, his body would respond, recover for the stretch run.
We need him strong like Bull for the next 7-8 games and more!
