(Not sorry.. sick of reading about western east lansing and Marquez beason)

And college football is always about how this year is affecting next year more so than other sports.

Going into this season I honestly thought we had seven players who would hit the ground running as definite big ten caliber starters. I was wrong by at least one on offense and the other EIGHT on defense. Yes Purdue started the season with 11 guys you couldn’t pick on on defense.. even KD has surprises me by making plays and rarely being exploited.

So as we think of next year, considering who I’m pretty sure will be gone (there will be some where I’ll be thrilled to be wrong) this is what I think we will have by then:

Big Ten caliber starters (star level players in bold, potential stars italicized)

QB Aidan O’Connell
RB
TE Payne Durham
WR Milton Wright
WR TJ Sheffield
WR
OT
OG
C Gus Hartwig
OG
OT

Leo Kydran Jenkins
NT Lawrence Johnson
3T Branson Deen, Demarje Lewis
DE
WLB Jaylan Alexander
MLB
LB Jalen Graham
CB Cory Trice
FS Cam Allen
SS Marvin Grant
CB Jamari Brown

Quality Big Ten level depth/potential quality starters (those likely to take the next step and/or only held back due to injury in italics)
QB Jack Plummer
RB King Doerue
RB Sampson James
TE Garrett Miller
TE Paul Piferi
WR Mershawn Rice
WR Abdul-Rahmaan Yaseen
WR Broc Thompson
OT/OG Cam Craig
LG Spencer Holstege
OT Eric Miller
DE Jack Sullivan
NT Bryce Austin
LB Yanni Karlaftis
LB OC Brothers
S Chris Jefferson

Then there’s a lot of other guys we just haven’t seen at all (e.g. Baczynski) or haven’t seen enough of (Mbow, Moussa, Kane, Romphf) or haven’t seen in a long time (Saunders)… that very well could step up..

But to me, if no one transfers out, this is the basis of what we have in terms of what transfers we need.

Really no starter caliber player identifiable at DE or MLB. Those two positions would benefit most from a Jamari Brown caliber transfer who comes in here and does it from day one with no nonsense.. just performs. The DE position is particularly troublesome.. because it begs the question “are Johnson, Jenkins, Deen, Lewis and company GOOD? Or are they only good because Karlaftis is drawing doubles.” I think johnson is just good but the other two are on that fence

And people can say “what about left tackle? The position isn’t that great now and Long leaves.” Well.. if cam Craig got to 100% and showed out there or if Mbow took over and did well would I be shocked? Not at all. Who takes over for KD? I don’t know. Who takes over for Karlaftis? Sullivan doesn’t have the burst despite the fact that I love his toughness and physicality. We haven’t seen Anderson at all.

I said before this year and I still believe that this is a 7-5 team this year. We answer those two positions with players who are just GOOD players.. whether it’s with a current player coming out of nowhere or a good transfer incoming, we have a chance to do much better.

As we have these next five games unfold and new players hit the field more extensively and we find out who is staying and who is going and who is arriving I’ll edit this ..

But this is where I see things now (

I like what you have presented. I suspect that we'll have 1 transfer of those you posted and a few more of the depth players moving on as well. All to get more playing time and/or be closer to home.
With upcoming coaching changes within the Big Ten and elsewhere, we should have some transfer portal opportunities to fill needs for next season PLUS the 2022 recruiting class is very close to full if not full already.
Wonder if Purdue will have a special recruit or two at today's game.

As games play out I’ll add players or move them based on how they show out.. so If yanni for example gets in and does really well (not saying that will happen but if it does) I’ll move him etc

The only way I see transfers, is if: 1. they're not busting into the two-deeps; or, 2. they just aren't a fit (personality, location, coaching, "schemes", chemistry, etc.)

There are simply too many opportunities on a building, developing, WINNING team to jump ship.

Agree. I don’t think we will have them unless it’s an issue external to football. Nothing about Purdue right now is saying “get out while you can.”

Nice.

But by default, AOC is a potential star next year.

Wonder if Mitchell comes back. He's missed a lot of time.

I think we might lose a qb or two.

btw, Chemistry is a tough class in some majors, but I suspect many majors don't require it. (Not like at nd, where even the gender studies majors have to take calculus, according to @NDAFArly - who, thankfully, has disappeared for now.)

Please don’t encourage this phony never-was to post his tripe.

doma alums are decent people, from my experience, but wannabe douchebags like this are why most of the world loathes nd…..
