I spoke on this exact issue with my Sociology students today because it is a social and political issue:
What we have is a major social, political, and economic issue that can’t find middle ground for all of those aspects. For example, the idea of allowing immigrants in to our country is a founding principle of our success as a country along with a guaranteed right in the Constitution...yet you have fearful individuals who are seeing American culture ‘washed away’ due to the idea of cultural pluralism rather than the melting pot/tossed salad concept of assimilation to the US culture. Cultural pluralism is an ideal and one that many view similar to the dreaded socialism. You simply can’t allow individuals from foreign countries to operate on their own regard without some sense of assimilation in to culture and society (shared norms, adhering to laws, use of language, etc).
This has much more to do with macro societal issues in terms of retaining American culture than it does anything else, imo. As humans, we naturally fear what we do not know. Not knowing the origins and intentions of those entering is a scary prospect to wrap your head around. When that worry is carried over to the economic strain our country is seeing and being push by the 1% and extremely wealthy, it is creating strain and dysfunction in society.
A bit of rambling thoughts because I’m typing on my phone but would explain more in detail if someone would like. In short, I think it is less a ‘race’ problem but more of an ethnicity and social problem.
