When he gets to play his natural position at the 4 next to one of the centers? He is night and day different when hes the 4 instead of the 3. Love that Painter is finally bringing him off the bench and playing him at his natural position and he is back to being the type of player we are used to him being!

Completely agree. He is much more confident and quick to the ball. The inside is not clogged up with two big bodies and he has room to operate.

Looking forward to see this team in Indy - time to bring a win home.

Liked his activity.....especially on the offensive glass....he's in position to do some damage coming off the bench....if he can just embrace his role.....like what I've seen so far lately.

Agree. And Cline should be starting at the 3 going forward. Have the Edwards duo come in at first sub.

Whoa there killer, Carsen is going to be a star. We need to getting him as much as experience now as possible so hes where we need him come March.

Didn't say anything about playing anyone more or less minutes. Just stating that they would be a good combo to come off the bench together. It would change the pace of the game instantly. Killer? Get a life

Completely disagree, carsen should be starting. Nothing needs changing at the moment. Carsen should be getting minutes in the high 20s every night and as a starter

He had a rough game from the floor today, but CE is absolutely the player that can kick the team into another gear, and he is finding additional ways to impact the game than just scoring. I expect he will continue to start and will end up with just about as many minutes as anyone other than CS and DM....doing well for a frosh......he'll have his valleys, but the upside is Yuge.

He did struggle shooting today but, as you alluded to, he was still a positive player in the game. Likely our best perimeter defender or soon will be. Made some nice off ball rotations and also was good about going over the top of screens on shooters. Some of our more experienced were having problems with that. Loved that rebound (maybe it was a steal) push and laser pass half the court right up the gut to Vince.
Kids impressive.

Best perimeter defender is Mathias...and it isn't even close.

Excellent point. He plays so smart. If Carsen can play that smart he would be better as he is so good physically. Let's hope takes Dakotas lead.
The thing Dakota does so well is he plays great off ball defense. It is very similar to playing post defense. As a post defender, if you don't put the work in off the ball, a good post player is going to be able to establish good position. You see this a lot with Swanigan and Haas off the ball and being able to get good shots within 6 feet of the bucket. Watch Mathias off the ball some time and you'll see a player who is putting the work in off the ball to deny a pass to a good wing player. CBoogie is a great defender one pass away but needs to improve more off the ball. Once he does, he will take a major step forward and he appears to be a much higher IQ basketball player than most freshman coming in. When you keep adding players that have high ceilings and have high basketball IQ's (Mathias, Biggie, CBoogie, Cline, PJT), you get a team that passes the ball as well as Purdue does. A team that passes up good shots for great shots.

I don't think Vince's natural position is 4. I think he is doing better because when he is coming off the bench as a 4, he is the 2nd option rather than the 3rd. When he starts, he is the 3rd option behind Haas and Swanigan. Vince seems to be a type of player who thrives with more chances to handle the ball. He definitely is not a ball hog, but better suited as the point forward, if anything.

I think what you are eluding to is that as a starter, Vince tended to look for his own shots...which I think is a totally fair assumption. CMP has long stated that when Vince allows the game to come to him and work within the offense, he is a totally different player. Some times it is hard to see because Vince is a some what of a smooth and laid back type of player (not really an emotional guy on the court) but it was painfully obvious that Vince was shot hunting and forcing the issue the first few games.

Maybe my basketball acumen is off, but when did Vince Edwards' natural position become the 4 spot? He is a 3, that played the 4 as a Frosh out of need. As someone that had been a head coach for 20 years & played college basketball.....I just don't see Vince Edwards as a "natural 4." Maybe a "stretch 4," but that is relatively new term & does not mean you are a natural 4.

I'm really not sure what is meant by "natural 4", but I do tend to think that Painter's offense tends to work best with 3 guards and a highly versatile 4 with great vision (such as Hummel, Edwards, or this year's version of Swanigan).

Totally agree. Just wish it didn't take so long for this change to happen!

Its amazing you know - Painter comes out in the second half by sitting Haas and bringing in Edwards at the 4 and letting Vince edwards and swanigan play their natural positions and all of the sudden it looks like ND cant guard Purdue and they both dominate all half

Once again I will note that Vince played the 3 all of last year.

Vince is a great player. He will be good regardless, but hes only at 85% when hes playing out of position at the 3, he unlocka his full potential at the four. Just look at how good he was today. Do not be foolex into thinking that just because Vince can play the 3, that he should. He is at his peak at the 4.

Probably but I think those that are attributing his early slump to his position are really missing the mark. Sometimes a slump is just a slump. Vince can play the 3 and play it pretty well. He just wasn't early this year.
