The addition of Lopez via the transfer portal makes it a three-man race for the starting kicker spot. Ben Freehill is the incumbent, Lopez is the fellow senior that has come in via the portal, and Spencer Porath is the true freshman.
Lopez is most likely to see the field regardless. He has been a kickoff specialist at UCLA for four seasons, and last year was the first year he did placements. He finished the year 6 of 11 on field goals for the year.
It is expected to be an open competition in fall camp for the kicker spot, and Porath winning the job would say a lot. Both Freehill and Lopez are in their COVID bonus year, so a true freshman beting them out would be impressive.
