2nd Team on Display - Future is Bright

Our bench logged some major minutes tonight as expected. With a comfortable lead secured early, there were long stretches of the 2019 squad together on the floor.

The line up with Haarms, Cline, Nojel, Taylor, and Grady was interesting. We didn’t necessarily take the ball to the hoop at will, but still got some good looking jumpers. Cline was on fire, so it made that offense tick. Would like to see Nojel get to the hoop more often, but he seems to pass the bass off. Boogie was also sitting much of the time, he’ll add a different dimension to that group. Jacquil had a couple of points, but still looks scared to make a mistake. Haarms is the most confident of the bunch - he was really having a ball out there tonight.

Will have some good momentum heading into the new year - hope the team enjoys their holidays.

Any thoughts on the potential of this team for next year?

Sasha and Wheeler will play a lot.

There will be some solid pieces returning next year, but so many holes vacated by this senior class. In some ways it will be a more interesting team to follow as we watch them develop and form chemistry. I think we need one more piece, possibly a grad transfer to stabilize the froncourt and help lead the young pups. Preferably someone with an outside shot, as we will lose quite a bit in the outside shooting department. Is there a poor man’s VE out there at a smaller school?

No thoughts on future potential... well, good thoughts, not bad ones ... but nothing major, way too soon. I think we keep on keepin' on.... and those who think we have guys leaving early ... NOT

Is he scared of making a mistake or is he rusty and just trying to get in the flow? If he were scared..would he shoot a 3 or two of them? I wish he couid get in sooner, but Purdue has a stretch and if he can see 1o minutes each game and slowly get those 10 minutes in during a closer score...it would help. I just wonder if Purdue and he are just really playing it careful to get even more healing and slowly being him on for the tourney play.

I agree with this. JT did not look "scared to make a mistake". He looked scared to get injured. He was very careful about how he moved and where he put his feet.

By the way, I saw plenty of errors and plenty of guys getting lost on defense or not fighting through screens, especially with the bench in there. Painter didn't pull any of them. This whole mantra of Players playing scared is nonsense.

Cline, Eastern and Haarms seem to have the D down. Sasha looked advanced for a frosh on D when he played this summer. Knowing CMP's value on D, I look for them to play a lot next year.

As to JT....will see if he can stay on the floor, but he played very well last night. The rest....no data yet, but hope at least one of Wheeler and the 2 new bigs can learn the D & help Haarms up front.

Will be interesting & fun to see that team grow as CMP coaches them, but my overall expectations are not high given the experience level of that future team relative to the B1G. I do have a lot of confidence in CMP improving them as the years takes shape.

What is the situation with summer games in 2018?? I'm guessing we can't have any? Sure would help after losing 4 starters.

It's easy to forget about Sasha this time of the year. I would love to hear how he is doing in practice, same with Wheeler. I think Sasha has the ability to be just as good as Dakota in a few years. This will be a great look at what a RS year does for players like SS and AW. If they look like freshmen next year I will be disappointed.

I think we gave some young guys with potential to eventually be good, but I don't think we'll be very good next year. Losing 4 Sr starters...Carsen is going to look like Willie Dean out there next year.

I'm a little concerned about next year also but we have a solid trio in Cline, CE and Haarms. Eastern is gaining experience and a healthy Taylor will contribute a bunch.
We'll have Wheeler, Sasha and some talented freshman. I'd say middle of the BIG. We shall see?

Being scared has it roots back in the Keady/Knight era origins. Not saying the original comment has an agenda, just disagree with the scared part. THAT is probably the biggest difference between Matt and Gene...freedom on offense and was the FIRST time I saw Matt's team at Purdue. Purdue has the offense it does due to SELECT shooting, not run and gun...but not rigid. When there is a degree of selection ...a degree of discipline...an understanding that what is a good shot for one isn't for another and a desire for efficiency many people see different things. Purdue is playing well right now due to TWO major changes from earlier. 1) Not sold out on the fools gold and just running down teh court and shooting quick 3's, but realizing there is a post presence as well. This is MUCH more than just scoring 2 pts and it has to be a consideration over the course of the game...with "consideration" being the operative word. 2) Shell defense, much better help and recover on the dribble.

Rebounding is what it is...athleticism is what it is...Matt's understanding of how to break a press is no different than a few years (but now has Carsen and an older group) and and Matt still recruits the same (budget different and Biggie help) and recruiting is improving. Being smart AND skilled really helps ;)...and if you can do that and be athletic ...

I think we will continue making the tourney next year
I guess I'm more optimistic...probably too much over the years. Still, even if we are not seeing them...can we not assume that Wheeler and Shasha improve? Who wouldn't like to start out with Haarms...teh guy that "MOST" didn't even mention last summer, Carsen, Cline..possibly Taylor and Eastern. GRady will be the great attitude, improved mental chemistry on the team and do whatever he can to win..playing what ever minutes he can get and not disrupting the team. Then...I've always been impressed with Hunter in the videos and can see him scoring right away, Dow and his defense and rebounding and Williams..big body...skilled and rebounder...

I know other teams will have a lot of star power...and haven't even considered them and they want to win as well...but I still like some pieces for Purdue going forward...

Next year's team will look very different, but they should still be at or near the top of the Big Ten and make the tournament. Too much talent not to. They will miss the shooting of this senior class and Haas being a dominant big man on offense. The athleticism coming in should make for a fun season. I think Wheeler and Carsen playing together will be a blast. I think Williams will shore up the rebounds and be an intriguing mix with Haarms. Hunter and Sasha will give some depth as well. Purdue will be even further ahead if they can land Tyger. I am remain very optimistic. A lot of people thought there would be a huge fall off with the loss of Biggie. If not for that WKU loss, Purdue would be a top 10 team looking to crack the top 5.

We are losing a lot more than just Biggie this coming offseason. I expect a pretty dramatic fall off next year. I think we finish 7th or 8th in the B1G assuming no one transfers/goes pro.

Only way we fall that far is if those that remain fall apart. lowest we go is 4th or 5th, maybe. We are reloading not rebuilding.

Do you understand other teams will be losing significant talent too, both seniors and early entry guys?

I like your optimism, but i disagree. We are losing 59% of our scoring. We are losing 51% of our rebounding. We are losing 57% of our assists.

Our bench scoring has been dreadful this year. We are in for a rebuild next year.

boogie, cline, haarms and eastern as a core. JT if he's healthy can contribute. Wheeler off of redshirt. Then the youngsters. Things will look different for sure, but I wouldn't consider that a rebuild job. If we are rebuilding with those guys, CMP has f***ed up.

Just to give a little break down of what I see for next year vs this year.

Starting PG:

This year: PJ
Next Year: Eastern (assuming he doesn't transfer)

I see this as a wash. PJ has better ball control and is a better shooter. Eastern is better defensively, and is a better driver.

Starting SG:

Both Years: Carsen

This spot will be an upgrade next year, because Carsen will be a little better next year than he is this year.

Starting Wing:

This Year: Mathias
Next Year: Cline

We will take a massive step back at this position next year. Nothing against Cline, but Mathias is just flat out better.

Starting Forward:

This Year: Vince
Next year: Wheeler? Taylor? Williams? Eifert?

No matter who you plug into this spot it will be a big step back from what Vince brings to the table.

Starting Center:

This year: Haas
Next year: Haarms

I would give this position a wash as well. Haas is dominant on the offensive end, and Haarms is dominant on the defensive end.

Subs:

This year: Cline, Haarms, Eastern, Eifert

Next year: Hunter, Williams, Sasha, Taylor

IMO the subs we have this year are all around better than the projected subs for next year. Hunter is probably more versatile than Cline, but he will be a freshman, and needs a lot of weight added. I don't see any of our subs next year having the impact that Haarms has had so far off the bench.

Furthermore, the teams I see ahead of us look like this.

MSU
Maryland
Penn State
Michigan
Iowa
Wiscy
Ohio State
Purdue

For the last couple of years we have been dominant offensively inside and out. Next year we don't project to be dominant in either category. We will be more athletic for sure, but we will be significantly less skilled.

That isn't correct at all. We still will have CE, Cline and Haarms as Topsecret said and RS players that will have had a year under their belt from a practice/getting to know the system perspective. It isn't optimism, it's reality we just aren't going to drop as far as you think we will.

We are going to be a different team yet again, but different doesn't mean bad nor that we are rebuilding. Again, we're just reloading.

We can agree to disagree.

We are losing some people. We are losing 4/5 of our best players....
I think you will be pleasantly surprised next year. We will have a strong core around CE, Haarms and Cline. Remember, Cline was a starter last year. Haarms could easily start, even in this, his freshman year. What does that mean?

Well it means we have 3 potential starters returning - for the purpose of analyzing what next year will be like. That's a good start. I also think that Wheeler will start as well. We have JT who has been in the program for a couple years, so the starters next year will be pretty experienced. Eastern will be a force next year. That's 3 guards and 3 post players who will form the core.

If all you do is stand back at a distance and say "OMG! We are losing 4 out of 5 starters", then you can carry the burden of worry all by yourself. As for me, the devil is in the details, and the details look promising.

At this point, the only way I will be concerned is if CE leaves. (I hope he doesn't read this. I don't want him to get any ideas. :D)

I've given you a break down position by position of where I think we get better, stay the same, and have a drop off. I'm not making uninformed statements. I've researched what next year's team will look look and concluded we will take a big step back.

I do have a couple of questions for you though.

What makes you think Wheeler will A)be the starter and B) be even close to what Mathias (assuming you have him at the 3) is Purdue this year? These same questions apply to Taylor replacing Vince.

Also, what makes you think Eastern will make a huge jump next year? From what we have seen so far this year, he has been an average backup.

Where do you see us finishing in the B1G, and behind who?

The potential of that line up gives me chills.

What has to happen for consistency is the ability to be very efficient in the post. Haas makes it easier for the shooters...and of course the shooters will be a bit "less" than this year. You can be really good when the shots are falling and the athleticism is making plays, but an inside threat that demands attention gives a bit more consistency to the team. You can get that a lot of ways, but it is an area that must be replaced.

I think Purdue can be pretty good next year, probably better than many...course I thought this year would be too due to the plaeyrs returning. You can't discount the importance of the seniors in ALL facets of basketball...we have been blessed to see such good people, good players work their way to where they are today. Purdue and us fans will miss them and all they bring to the sport above and beyond making baskets...their facing adversity, their work ethic, their team play, their constant improvement. When Matt hangs it up...this will be a class he has such fond memories because they are what a coach wants to coach outside of raw talent no matter what happens in teh tourney
