2018 recruiting radar

I think Purdue has a shot at Ahrens, and he should at least be a maybe. THT is more like a long shot than a maybe, but I think Purdue would make his top 5 if he came out with one today. Embery was almost a lock, but he blew up this summer and added major offer after major offer. For whatever inexplicable reason he really likes Arkansas and Oklahoma hasn't offered him. I think Purdue is in his top 3, but I would be surprised if Embery chooses Purdue. Dowuana is holding out for better offers, but he didn't jump up much at all over the summer and Purdue is strongly in the mix.

I wouldn't be surprised if we land Washington or Castleton, but I think Hayes is more like a long shot. In the end, it's all conjecture though. I think he will end up getting some good pieces, but I don't know if he grabs another future star like Eastern, Edwards, and Biggie before him although a Williams has a chance to be that guy.

Yes, just forgot Ahrens a maybe for sure. think we are in his final list.

FWIW, We made Jeremiah Francis' top 10. Still a longshot but better than not making it.

I think his top 5 will end up being UNC, Purdue, OSU, MSU, and IU. Unless a team like Duke /Kentucky/Kansas/Zona slides in with an offer. I had UNC as the front runner before they offered. I think they are the most likely even though all of the five I listed have ties to him or his family. I just think that if little Thompson continues to improve, we offer and take him. I think that is the most likely reason we are a long shot.

We are and I think the favorites are Michigan and Purdue. OSU and Xavier are heavy in that mix as well. Here is an article about his top six if you are interested. Also, Williams was tweeting at him telling him to pick Purdue. I think we have a strong pull, but he may not leave the state of Ohio and Michigan has made him a priority. We shall see, but Painter loves big versatile guards that can shoot.

Depends on if we can get Ahrens back on campus - or not. I know there is more than the normal pull to Michigan via his aau coach, and you are correct about OSU still being a possible destination for him.

I hope you are right, but I fear he stays at OSU. I imagine Butler recruited him before and he would be at home with players he already committed to playing. Can't find a reason not to like Holtman and so I really think OSU is in the driver's seat, but Matt recruited before and Purdue offense always has a place for a shooter...we shall see...

I think if he was sold on OSU, he would have committed by now. He has already met and spoken with Holtmann. I think Michigan is in the drivers seat. Purdue does have a chance though, and a very good one. He likes Painter, what Purdue has been able to accomplish recently, and how he would be used. Xavier and OSU are strong in the mix, but I would say they are in tier two. No way to know for certain, but based on his comments, that's how I would lay it out.

If Purdue misses out on Embery, which at this point seems like a forgone conclusion, then picking up Ahrens or Hunter becomes much more important. Big tall guards that can play multiple positions. There isn't the fear of being stuck behind Eastern and Carsen because Painter isn't afraid to run three guards. This could be very appealing to a player like Hunter or Ahrens, mainly because it means immediate playing time and even a chance to start right away.

The more I read these boards, almost tells me daily we aren't getting any more recruits for 2018, or any year for that matter......as I constantly read, there are not great indications for any of the recruits we are looking at. The only good news from a Purdue perspective I read here, is once spots fill elsewhere then Purdue can take whats left.

I see it though.... 1)long term though & 2)also focus on filling team needs.

While Purdue might not do great one year, that causes you to have more spots open and do better the next. Additionally, your competition might take a guy one year, where you lose out, but because of that guy....you point to that as a recruiter, and it takes away competition there, to some point, the next year.

As far as team needs, Williams was a HUGE addition(in more ways than one). I think we do get one of: Embery, Hunter, Dowuona, Phinesee, Ahrens, Castleton, Hayes, Butler, Llewelyn, Carter, THT. Although it might not look good on some of these guys at the moment; they have not committed anywhere yet. Any one of those guys combined with Williams is an good start for our team needs. And as usual, there are guys that will emerge that fill our team needs, we do not even know about....perhaps even overseas.

hope you are right. Relative to Hunter...I thought he was related to Eric Hunter QB for Purdue that just recently what shot?

And we are out of the running on Embery.

Listed his new top 5. Arkansas, A&M, Butler, West Virginia and Arizona State.

Something happened. Even as he was getting offers he was liking Purdue posts and then it just... stopped. I think something happened behind the scenes. I thought we would make his top five, but it did seem like Purdue is out of the running.

Purdue is mentioned at the bottom of this article from Scout about Lithuanian big Lukas Kisunas (link). I won't pretend to know anything about the kid.

I remember last month when an inside source - relative - said he was a lock for Purdue . until he got all those other offers.

Maybe it is because we are closer to landing Hunter and he is priority 1?

Trying to look at it glass half full

I believe you may be on to something. or maybe Embery believes Hunter is our #1 priority. . I believe Embery will be a great college player where ever he goes.

Right, Lutz may have backed off Embery since he seemed to pop on the radar after Lutz was hired.

Latest from solid sources in the last hour: Phinesse to IU is "imminent". Aherns is a "solid-to-heavy" UM lean. FYI.

What about CMP's recruiting history makes you think he will get more than 1 guy from that list?

1 guy plus TW really is pretty typical for CMPs so called "Plan A" recruits.
Nothing I am just hoping for more than one.

This is a very serious question. As recruiting goes, coaches and assistant coaches are usually credited with recruiting certain areas and recruits. Last year, Lultz was credited with recruiting la lum's Epperson to Creighton. Earlier this year, Lultz was credited with being the main recruiter for Embery. What other recruits was Lultz credited with recruiting since his arrival at Purdue in the 2017 and 2018 classes?

Your sources are bullshit until I see it happen, phinisee to IU wouldn't hurt me in any way
Well my source on Aherns is a Michigan guy who told me ahead of time the commitments of McGary, Robinson Jr and Brandon Johns. He also let me know about Spike coming to Purdue before it went public. He's not just guessing. And he didn't say Aherns to UM was any lock. Just that was the reasonably strong direction the wind was blowing.

IU wants Phinisee. It wouldn't be a surprising move, but I am not sure how much success he will find there. His height puts him at a disadvantage, so he needs a system he can fit in. Not sure that is Archie.

Ahrens isn't a lock to Michigan, but they have made him a top priority. I think Purdue has a similar sales pitch with how he will be used and they have had a similar level of success. I am hoping Williams is the swaying factor that lands him at Purdue. With his height, we could afford to sign both him and Hunter.

With Embery gone, I want THT as my favorite remaining recruit. Instant offense, great size, good defense, and a great kid. Landing him and Williams would make me very excited for the class and future. That would give us three straight classes with atleast one top 50 caliber player. With Williams/Wheeler/Haarms having a chance at being difference makers as well.

I think this years Boilers will be special. I think if they make a deep run, Purdue can consistently start drawing the eye of top 50 players. Win a gold, beat out MSU for a Big Ten title when they are easily the favorite. Sprinkle in another minimum of a sweet sixteen but hopefully a final four run and that will be more attractive the big names.

I might have missed something, but how would adding THT give us 3 straight classes with at least 1 top 50 player?

THT would be great. He just got an offer from Kansas. He is blowing up and our chances seem to be fading.

THT is going to make a big move in the rankings - possibly into the range of 50. Pretty sure that is what he is implying.

When you get offers from Kansas your ranking jumps

I agree with that. I was more questioning the "3 straight classes part".

Was Nojel the top-50 credit last year?

Scout: 95
Rivals: 73
247: 65
ESPN: 82

Again I'm a big fan of NE, but I'm not sure he's a top-50 recruit.

Exactly. I'm guessing he is saying Carsen was top 50 the year before, and he was clearly outside the top 50.

I hate to be on subject, but who is the new juco big man we are supposedly recruiting? it's in the trending articles.

Yeah. My kid does "Singapore Math" at his school. I asked the math teacher how many Fields Medal winners could she name from Singapore. When she said she didn't know of any, I replied "exactly!"

Years ago "Singapore math " was respected. I used to ask Wayne Bishop at Cal State on his various reviews of k-12 math books as he was tuned in. Too many math books in teh USA venture outside of math into teh political arena due to passing the multicultural review. Haven't ventured into teh Mathematically Correct site to see if they have any reviews or just pedagogical opinions. The site is under constructions, but did find
