Ok, so the 2009 team has a clear edge over the 2015 team. And why not, before Hummel went down, we were playing like the best team in the country....not just a F4 favorite but a strong NC contender.

How about the last Purdue team to get into the Elite 8 - the 1999 squad?

Jr PG Carson Cunningham vs Sr PG Hill - Advantage 1999
Sr SG Jaraan Cornell vs. Jr SG Stephens - Draw
Sr SF Mike Robinson vs. Sr SF Davis - Advantage 2015
Sr PF Brian Cardinal vs Fr PF Swanigan - Draw
Sr C Greg McQuay vs Sr C Hammons - Advantage 2015

Bench - 2015 team wins in a riot
So F Smith vs So F Vince/Smotherman
So G Maynard Lewis vs So G PJ/Mathias/Cline
So C Allison vs So C Haas/Taylor

Score is 3-1 in favor of 2015 team

I'd have a hard time calling Cornell and Stephens a draw. Cornell is 16th on the Purdue all time scoring list and is 4th on the Purdue all time steals list. He's one of 8 players in Purdue history to average better than 10 points per game each of his 4 years.

His scoring dipped to 12.5 in the Elite 8 year but he also averaged 4.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists.

I'd also have a hard time expecting Swanigan to have the impact that Sr. Cardinal had.

Fair comment. You make a great case.

At the same time, Cardinal and Cornell were the top two returning scoring options in 1999 while Swanigan is new and Stephens is only 4th.

Further in the Cornell-Stephens comparison, Cornell was shooting 34.7% on threes to Stephens 38.7%. To me, I think Stephens greater efficiency is as important to the 2015 team as Cornell's higher scoring is to the 1999 team.

Swanigan vs Cardinal is another close call....especially if Swanigan gels with the team by season's end as we expect him to do. From what we have seen of Swanigan so far, he looks like he will at least match Cardinal's 2nd round draft status should he choose to be a one and done

At this point, I would say only Hammons & the bench is the 2015 advantage. Mike Robinson was a beast & just as good as RD. That is a draw at best for the '15 team & I do like RD.

I think Mike Robinson is one of the most under-appreciated players in the past 20 years. I'd also take him over Davis.

And as someone else said, expecting swanigan to have an impact equal to a senior cardinal is a bit much.

I'd also say draw on the stephens-cornell matchup.

Overall, without looking back at the stats, I'd give the edge to 99.

We all know CS is a great talent and at the same age easily looks like more of a talent than Cardinal, but we know absolutely nothing about his "team" game and intangibles he brings to the team. We don't know if he will go all out for that loose ball. We don't know if he will absolutely frustrate his opponents. We know nothing about his will to play D1 defense and his heart. I know that about Cardinal. I can only hope CS has anywhere near those types of attributes.
