I have no warm fuzzies for any Purdue QBs either currently on the team or being recruited. What I have a problem with is over - recruiting at one position and then wasting 2 years and trying to transform a 3* QB into some other position that he's not qualified at or very good at.
I hated transforming Henry into a DB. Rather than having Henry shift positions, I would have rather cut him and recruited a real DB. I realize you can't really do that.
Whether he redshirted or not, adding Hunter would mean we'd have 7 QBs on our roster for 2018 with one of them already trying to become a WR. And if we add Taylor, Moore and Anderson, with Hamilton to go along with Anthrop, Zico and Wright, then Sparks will most likely be very low on our depth chart at WR next year. I hate to come across this way, but that's not a very efficient use of our scholarship resources. And neither is having two kickers on scholarship.
if we added Hunter, what becomes of Sipe? hopefully, he doesn't become another back-up WR or DB. I have no clue what Alstott will become. Sure, I'd love to ad
d Hunter.
Wolegib-always read and enjoy your takes and opinions but must respectfully disagree on this one.
If Sindelar was unable to play the last 2 games of season on his gimpy leg, we were totally "f...ed"
1. Of all the positions on a football team, QB position requires more depth than any other position. It is simply TOO important to loose your starting or 2nd team QB to injury, grades or "whatever issues". You can make up and cover for losing a middle guard or LB-but not a QB!
2 .QB's are ALWAYS the best athletes on most HS football teams. Therefore, I have no issues with recruiting 4,5 or even 6. They will eventually contribute to your team in multiple ways.
3. Typically QB's are your finest students, academics and are usually involved in community. Having several improves team cohesion and community involvement + grade pt averages (I realize J Manziel and B Mayfield are exceptions, though)
4. I agree Henry did not become a stellar DB(He was a GREAT teammate and leader, however) Sean Robinson became an elite LB and a team captain. 5* QB recruit Owen Daniels out of Naperville Central HS in IL became All Big10 & All-American TE@WI and NFL All-Pro.
5. If you doubt athletic ability of former PU QB's-just consider 1959-60 starting PU QB Bernie Allen-played for NY Yankees or Bob Griese (3 sport athlete) or even Drew Brees who could of played on PU baseball team or tennis team.
I predict that Sparks will end up by senior yr as a team captain and possibly All- Big 10. I also submit that it is WAY too early to dismiss Alstott who I am hopeful will be a team leader and positive influence on this squad later. Not unlike the Anthrops and Dierkings from years past.
Purdue will need both Sipe and Plummer in coming years!
