If I was the new coach

I'm in the wait n see camp. Like most, I was hoping for a big name splash hire, but what we got was a "Who?"
Obviously, i hope like hell is succeeds (read a story about Dabo Sweeney being in a similar situation when he was brought into Clemson 12 years ago, so there's hope....).
But...I think if we see either a decline or not growth in years 2 or 3, then we have the right to question MBobs decision.

I would love to know the list of who MBob reached out to and was told "thanks but no thanks".
It sounds like they at least had discussions with Helton and Monken.

would also like to see the list, then we would get an idea how our program is perceived, although I probably know the perception.
I think the perception of the Purdue program is relatively positive. Most of that is offensive identity and the fact that the general college football fan might tune in to a Purdue vs Ohio State game to see if Purdue could pull off the upset.
Maybe I'm a homer, but I think Purdue is behind only OSU, UM, and PSU in terms of perception of B10 programs. Purdue plays an exciting brand, usually puts up big numbers, known for the upset, etc.
Now....if you're a head coach looking at making a career defining move, the perception might be completely 180 degrees different.

your last sentence is what I was referring too. I'd put us behind Wisky, Iowa, and msu

I think the main issue was our lack of NIL $ compared to other programs.

The 5 star guard from Iowa said he took less money to play at alabama than he was going to receive playing at Iowa. So NIL money is not always a factor!

However like the past, And other businesses, I’m going to speculate nil money is reported as income for tax purposes . And a lot of additional money and perks are pocketed and never reported.

Certain colleges in the south had a tradition of providing recruits with coed escorts on their official visits. These escorts were provided free to ensure that recruits became familiar with the campus sites and geography. The escorts volunteered their services and were frequently providing those services 24/7. Another tradition at a college in the south was to give players $100 bills as they left the field after the game. The donations were never recorded by either the donor or the player.

So I suspect there are still a lot of free perks and other services provided that are never reported or included as part of the NIL. And even if you don’t commit, Mississippi is still a nice place to take an official visit. It’s a beautiful campus. Plenty of camellias and azaleas! Very beautiful this time of year!

There was a good article on The Athletic a couple weeks back where they asked multiple top recruits what went into there decision-making. For most, NIL wasn't on the top of the list - they were more concerned with their relationship with the coach, academics at the school, player development, etc. - many who had passed up dollars to go somewhere they thought was a better fit. Pretty encouraging comments for the most part.
What did stick out to me was attitudes towards the transfer portal. Got the impression that most of these guys won't hesitate a minute to transfer if they're not getting the time or treatment they think they need or deserve. Several stated that they had their transfer school already picked out.

Academics at the school? That sounds like routine player speak.

This may be one of those situations where you are missing the context. In many cases the concern wrt academics is along the lines of " hey, I don't really need to go to class, do I?". (tic, I hope)

I'm hitting the portal....Jones did nothing at Iowa on offense....That should show portal guys you have a chance to make plays at Purdue
I'm sure Walters and Co. are mentioning that, but Jones exploding on the scene was aided in large part by Brohm putting Jones front and center, like he did with Moore and Bell and to a lesser extent Wright.
