Game day is here. And all signs seem to point toward victory for Purdue. An easy victory, perhaps.

But, who knows?

UConn is awash in turmoil, as head coach Randy Edsall resigned on Monday. The defensive coordinator will call the shots vs. the Boilermakers today. Someone named Lou Spanos.

So, there’s that. There’s also this: The Huskies have switched quarterbacks. Don’t think this is Steve Young taking over for Joe Montana.

Amid this chaos, Jeff Brohm is a bit cautious. He knows UConn is desperate, that it has nothing to lose. And Brohm expects the Huskies to pull out all the stops and throw some wrinkles at his squad.

The best thing the Boilermakers could do is punch UConn in the nose ASAP to drain any spirit the squad may have brought to game day. Early success by Purdue could cause the Huskies to fold their tent and give up.

It’s a theory, anyway.

Should be a fun storyline to watch. Other storylines today from East Hartford, Conn.:

Can Purdue run the ball? The program has made it a mandate. The opener was a mixed bag, as the Boilermakers had just 85 yards vs. Oregon State on 33 carries (2.6 ypc). Purdue should be able to have its way with UConn, which allowed 226 yards rushing to FCS Holy Cross last week in a stupefying 38-28 home loss. Perhaps Zander Horvath—who ran 21 times for 81 yards last week—can eclipse the 100-yard mark for the fifth time in his career.

Will the Boilers dominate? Oddsmakers have made Purdue a 34-point favorite. That’s a huge number and reflects more on the ineptitude of UConn. Can the Boilers not just win—which seems like a foregone conclusion—but smash what looks to be a hapless foe? A dominating effort sure would give Purdue some mojo as it heads to Notre Dame next week. Adding WR TJ Sheffield to the offensive mix—Brohm thinks his No. 1 slot receiver and top kickoff return man will play after missing the opener—will add another nice weapon to an offense that already teems with deadly options.

Can Purdue come home relatively injury-free? The squad would hate to suffer any serious injuries trying to dispatch a program that seemingly is circling the drain. This contest may be an opportunity to get the key starters out of the game early and let backups seem plenty of action. Purdue sure could use a season of relative good health after being snake-bitten by injuries in recent years.

What are your thoughts on the game?
