Welcome to this week's “BOILING OVER,” GoldandBlack.com’s weekly information-clearinghouse and analysis column meant for our site members and site members only. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping us keep what is sometimes delicate or proprietary information confined to this message board. This feature allows us to be more flexible in our reporting, to our readers' benefit, and we lose that ability if we can't keep this feature secure and the value of our site's membership at its peak. Additionally, we address recruiting and hiring processes in-depth and often without filter in this feature and we do it behind a subscription-protected barrier for a reason, in hopes of avoiding situations where our reporting can impact the recruiting process, which can happen occasionally.

So again, we appreciate everyone's cooperation very much.We know there are a lot of aggregator blogs out there, and a lot of you are on Twitter and other message boards. We don’t want to come off like Darth Vader (before he turned good at the end of "Return of the Jedi" of course) here, but we would be doing all our subscribers a disservice if weren’t proactive about protecting the value of their membership.

PURDUE BASKETBALL RECRUITING

Will Shaver'
s commitment to North Carolina on Visit No. 1 — days after stating he'd announce on his birthday in September — knocks a name off Purdue's 2022 recruiting board and a visit off the June schedule. He was due to visit starting June 18.

But Purdue's center mix remains with options.

Matt Painter and staff have been this close to pre-empting Shaver's visit by offering Kebba Njie. Painter called Njie over the weekend when he was headed back from Atlanta and has been doing a great deal of legwork on the center.

In our opinion, Njie is a better prospect and a clear-cut Purdue fit whereas it was hard to know for sure with Shaver because the familiarity probably wasn't quite there yet. With Njie, at least Purdue has been actively recruiting him for more than a year, he's a Midwest kid and plays for Indy Heat and LaLumiere, where Purdue has relationships with people who'll shoot 'em straight.

Njie was about to be offered and now will almost certainly be offered, and maybe can be finagled into that visit date vacated by Shaver. We'll see.

Here's more video of Njie.

On the big man front, Purdue still has Tarris Reed due in for an official visit the weekend of the 10th and 11th. No idea where Purdue stands with him, but reasonable to assume that the chances of a commitment are minimal.

Purdue will expand its recruiting board for posts, most likely, also, as coaches get out and see players. It is fully committed to signing a center in this class, even though Zach Edey and Caleb Furst will have multiple years of eligibility after this season. Read between the lines on that (re: Edey) if you wish.

Can't add much more on official visits except that we expect Purdue to get Jalen Washington in for his official at the very end of the month, after he has visited North Carolina, Stanford, Oklahoma and Indiana. Regarding that list and UNC, OU and Stanford, we'd be very surprised if he ventured that far from home for college, but obviously those are formidable schools. Indiana is going to make Washington a huge priority.

The other visitor for June 10-12 at this moment is Camden Heide, probably the safest bet for a June commitment for Purdue if one is going to happen.

We do think Purdue has been the frontrunner from Day 1 on that one, but Heide has been in no hurry, and the reality of the Boilermakers' scholarship numbers reaching their breaking point after they've (twice) gotten to a pair of perimeter commitments didn't move him, even though we believe his family was on board with him making an early commitment and all that.

Arizona and Minnesota were the two schools that posed the greatest threats to Purdue early on. Arizona then got hit by the NCAA and fired Sean Miller. Minnesota went through a coaching change also and could be in for a scorched-earth sort of season.

Heide is also still getting recruited by Minnesota, as well as Iowa State and some others, but is there anyone on that list that could unseat Purdue? (BN)

PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING

While Purdue missed out on Clemson RB Chez Mellusi, who committed to Wisconsin earlier this week, the staff continues to look for running back help.

The coaches also are still searching for help at other spots. It’s believed two targets are Marshall offensive lineman Cain Madden and Missouri cornerback Jarvis Ware. Madden is a big-time prospect who has the likes of Florida State and Notre Dame courting him. The 6-3, 315-pound Madden was All-CUSA and second-team All-America last year. Not bad for a guy who arrived as a walk-on. Madden has one year of eligibility.

Purdue landed Marshall wideout Broc Thompson last Saturday. Purdue already has added one O-lineman from the portal: Tyler Witt (Western Kentucky), who projects to start at right guard after taking part in spring drills.

The 6-1, 175-pound Ware had 51 tackles with six PBUs and a pick-six for Mizzou in 2020. Ware played 28 career games over three seasons for the Tigers. He missed spring drills after having ACL surgery.

Purdue already has added defensive backs Jamari Brown (Kentucky) and C.J. McWilliams (Florida) via the portal. Brown projects as a corner, while McWilliams could be a nickel back or safety. (TD)

MORE PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING

As far as we know, this weekend's football official are as we've reported, but we'll update you as we learn more and touch base with as many of them as we can afterward for reaction and stuff.

Will anyone commit? Yeah, probably, but Purdue's numbers are pretty restrIctive, so don't expect this to be a double-digit commitment sort of June. The last weekend of the month will be a big one, too.

Caraway seems to be favoring Purdue, but has plotted other visits. So did Will Shaver, by the way. Kalib Perry has seemed like a possibility but he just got offered by Tennessee so we'll see if maybe he plays things out kinda deep now.

Purdue should have a real shot at Steptoe, but will have to ride him out. Sampson, too. He seems to be the running back they want. Strickland, too. These are a couple of high-end dudes who aren't going to be easy gets.

Again, we will update you on the weekend as we find out more. (BN)

PURDUE BASKETBALL RECRUITING

Before any official visits ever take place, Purdue will already have had a really eventful first week of June from a recruiting visits perspective.

Monday, 2023 prospect Myles Colvin officially became 2023 target Myles Colvin, as Purdue offered the Boilermaker legacy during his unofficial visit.

Whether that'll be an open-and-shut case for Purdue, we'll see, but It goes without saying that was a big offer for the Colvins. Some context that may be worth mentioning here lies in the fact that Myles Colvin's sister, Raven, committed to Purdue volleyball as a freshman.

We've yet to see Myles Colvin play — we should get a chance Tuesday night In Indy — but know that his athleticism is really high-level, physicality and strength should be pluses and his skills at this stage are well on pace.

Kids of pros tend to find a way, too.

Anyway, again, stay turned for more on Myles Colvin mid-next week hopefully.

Meanwhile, today (Thursday), Purdue gets four-star guard Dravyn Gibbs-Lawhorn on campus. He's from Lafayette, but home from prep school. DGL already holds a Purdue offer. Purdue will have to dig In for the long haul on that one, most likely, and we wouldn't expect It to be much hometown bump. This will likely be a national kind of deal once the player gets healthy — he missed this whole season — and people see him play.

Friday, Purdue hosts Cathedral 2023 freakshow Xavier Booker for an unofficial. His talent and physical dimensions make him a no-brainer. We'd expect an offer there, too. TCU and, ahem, LSU have already offered, and Booker will visit Ohio State, Illinois, Louisville and Indiana in June. Expect him to have a robust list of offers by the end of the month.

Offered point guard target Lawrent Rice was scheduled to visit Purdue this week, too, but has apparently had to reschedule. He's another player who might be picking up offers left and right this summer. Ohio State may have right of first refusal on that one, but Purdue's been very much top of mind for Rice for quite some time, after Micah Shrewsberry got the Boilermakers involved very early.

The 2023 class is Indiana is an interesting one, because Colvin is really the only In-state prospect we'd view as a likelihood for Purdue at this stage. Not sure Purdue will wind up offering more than a couple of in-state players: Colvin, Booker and DGL (If you count him as "in-state"). Jalen Hooks, we'll see. Sam Orme may/should be someone Purdue looks at, and there will be a few others.

Keep in mind, Purdue has one junior on its team right now, so scholarships will be tight for 2023.

PURDUE FOOTBALL

Jim Everett is expected to be on campus for the season opener on Sept. 4 vs. Oregon State. The former Purdue star quarterback (1981-85) is being enshrined in the Indiana Football Hall of Fame and will be part of an event hosted by the local Tiller Chapter of the National Football Foundation.

• Note of potential interest: New Purdue wide receiver Broc Thompson is actually the younger brother of former Ohio State basketball center Trevor Thompson, and the son of former Major League Baseball player Ryan Thompson.

• Because of financial constraints incurred during the pandemic, Purdue never filled the deputy athletic director job vacated when Jason Butikofer left in April 2020 to be chief operating officer at the University of Washington. And there apparently is no hire imminent.

It’s believed no interviews have taken place. In fact, interviews may not occur until the end of the month. It’s thought Purdue could be ready to hire a No. 2 man for AD Mike Bobinski no later than mid-July, barring anything unforeseen. (TD/staff)
