Yikes...I'm watching IU at OSU and this is some the worst basketball I've ever seen.

I have yet to find anyone who can explain what exactly Ohio States offensive identity is. Dribble penetration from Thornton and Gayle, toss around, repeat, take terrible shot.

Kudos to IU because they found the fire late and won. Ohio State looked uninterested the last 5 minutes. How Holtmann has a job is amazing.

Does the AD transition buy him another year?

His buyout before April is like $15m. You couple that with what it will cost for an elite coach, and you are staring at $30m.
Basically he is guaranteed his entire salary for the next 4 seasons… so it never really decreases by a large lump sum at any point.

What did he do to get that extension in 2022?

It's interesting timing but also hard to figure.

He was coming off five 20+ wins seasons his first five years at Ohio State and four NCAA tournament appearances (with no tournament in 2020). Now, they had three 2nd round losses and one first round.....but were competitive every year. Early departures have hurt him with Branham and Sensabaugh, but it appears that if he doesn't have a dominant go-to player (include Liddell and KBD in earlier years as well), the offense struggles.....hard to see an identity right now.

You won't get any sympathy, though, from this native to the Buckeye State.....and Ohio State has more resources to tap than just about anybody.

We are talking about Holtmann at OSU. Woodson has at least next year. When comparing him to Archie, Woody has 2 tourney bids in 3 years. Archie had 0 in 4.
Technically, Woody has two tourneys in two years, but this year's chances are very slim.

Unlike Holtmann, Woody's buyout is manageable, and Dusty May currently makes $1.25m at FAU with almost no buyout needed.

I would not be the least bit surprised if Woody 'retired' after this season. He doesn't need the stress or the paycheck; especially if it's not trending up for him at IU.

3 more years after this season at $4.2 million per, fully guaranteed…so $12.6 million, correct ?

Not really, though that is the yearly pay.

It's 100% of the life of the contract ($12.6m) if Woody is let go after this year, and 50% if he's let go after next year. So $12.6m after this year and $4.2m (1/2 of $8.4m) after next season. And those payments to Woody would be spread over many, many years.

If Woody and IU agree that with the right settlement he's done; I could easily see a $6-8m lump sum buyout after this year. And IU would pay that lump sum and then finance it over 20 years, so $500k or so a year for 20 years for the net cost to IU. And with Dusty May making so much less at FAU and with almost no buyout on that end, the annual pay for the head coach position, even with Woodson's buyout factored in, would be about the same as keeping Woody.

You have a link for this?
This was before the raise, which did not change the buyout schedule:

"Indianapolis Star reporter Zach Osterman had the details on Woodson’s deal with Indiana:

Per the report, Woodson and Indiana have agreed to a 6-year deal that will pay him approximately $3 million per year. The buyout for Woodson will be 100% of his remaining contract through the first four years and 50% of the guaranteed compensation for the final two years."

Would like to know how much money Purdue has saved over the years only having two coaches over the last 40 years? Moral of the story, if you have a coach that proven he/she can compete at the highest level year in and year out, keep them.

A little off-topic, but I wonder if Jamison Battle is regretting his move to OSU. It looked like an obvious upgrade a year ago, but now Minnesota is really coming together while OSU is tanking.

So they can get rid of him now for $12.6 million or 1 year from now for $4.2 million…I would bet he gets one more year, especially coming off the LEO buyout.

It looked good when they were 12-2 - not so much now

I jumped the gun by implying he won’t make the tourney in year 3. Got my wires crossed.

I do feel like IU could manage this correctly since Woody was always a stopgap to right the ship and get things back on course. I do think he is here next season but if he doesn’t figure out the roster with transfers and some guys in the back court, it will be another tough year.

Side note, kudos to Leal who has shown he is a gamer. Basically played 0 minutes for 4 years and has been huge the last couple of games. Will Woody opt to start him and Galloway in lieu of Cupps? Probably not but it would make sense.

Those are the accurate financials, but if Woody has had enough there is always room for a middle ground. And as I stated, the likeliest replacement would be a financial super-bargain, which would take much of the sting away from the buyout.

A $500k annual budget hit for a bunch of years forward to improve the marquee program? I'm not an actuary, but to me that makes the buyout a net cost positive. Much like the Allen buyout; the increased booster revenue for football since Allen was fired has likely already paid for that buyout.

It was painful watching those do something with the ball. I can't even use the "O" word to describe what either team was doing with the ball.

Missed shots are just part of the game but fairly wide open within 2' of the rim misses are really an insult to the game.

I was watching some IU Pod cast, and the dude predicted that their great come back at Ohio St. and Leals great play that he really believes that IU will beat Purdue outright at Mackey Saturday?? Leal needs to play 30 minutes and start, he's that good!

Imagine the staff prepping and being like “we got to scout Leal!”

Honestly starting him over Cupps is a no brained but even Woody ain’t that smart.

Curious how Ware is doing. Looked like a knee or something on that last second dunk attempt.

2 bad teams and 1 had to lose. Very bad basketball at it's finest.

Not to wish harm on a player but the Ware breakaway was so ugly. I truly believe it was embarrassment when he acted like he was hurt.

Does anyone remember when it was an article of faith among some around here that Chris Holtmann is a far superior coach to Painter? It wasn't that long ago.
Some “feel” a lot of coaches are better than Matt

So much for that…
