Just did a little bit more digging on this game. I've not watched much of Maryland so far this season but it appears they average more turnovers per game than we do. Also, they are one of the worst rebounding teams in the Big Ten. Perhaps these are the things driving this opening line.
Tex: I'm staying away from this one. Before the line came out, I would have predicted MD -2 or 3. When I saw this line I was shocked. I hope I'm wrong but I don't like this game. If I were to bet I would take the points and MD. Not in the mood to do that!!Agree about the surprise....wouldn't want to touch this game, though. Over under seems to be 139.
Dry? Are you down for a few pounds on the Boilers?
If Haas plays 13 minutes like he did against Nebraska we will lose. He needs to get 20+ minutes for us to win. Playing Haas more give us the greatest opportunity to win against both Nebraska & Maryland. Our lineup needs to matchup against our competitions.
Won't be surprised to see biggie and Haas play together. I think we see less of Vince at a three and those three players spread time at a four and 5 more. Dakota and Cline see minutes at the three and someIf Haas plays like he did in those 13 minutes for 20 minutes or more every game, Purdue doesn't lose this season. He had 11 and 5 in those 13 minutes. He would have given about Purdue 20-10 had he gotten 20 minutes. At time, the Haas and Biggie combo needs to play together for longer stretches...but losing Smotherman diminishes that opportunity. That is then biggest loss with Smotherman leaving...him giving 3-5 minutes per game to allow Biggie to rest after getting more of that combo of bigs.
Anyone know how uncommon this is? Home team that is 6 places higher in the polls (7 in coaches) that is a 3 point dog, especially this late in the season?Tex: I'm staying away from this one. I hope we take care of the ball, kill them on the glass and prove that spread correct!!
How the hell is it only 3?!I guess Vegas thinks they are overrated big time! Was figuring MD a 2h-3 pt Fav!!! Still love us with the spread!!!
Kenpom doesn't like Purdue? He has us -3 at Maryland and #12 overall. What am I missing here?Vegas + the analytics (namely KenPom) haven't liked us all year, but I think we've been playing w a chip on our shoulder because of it. Going into OSU we were 19-2 and ranked #17 coming off four straight conference road wins, and Vegas still made us dogs (again) at 9 loss OSU. It just is what it is at this point.
Good luck today. Expecting a close game.

1H - Is when you bet on the halftime score. 2H - Is betting on the 2nd half score.Sagarin has us right about -3. Depends on which Purdue shows up. Win by 15-20 or lose a close one.
Can someone explain the 1h 2h thing to me I'm not a gambler.
sounds like Billy Walters will be watching our game then !I'm in Vegas and just got back from the sportsbook. The Purdue line moved from -3 to +1 and eventually to pick em in about a 10 minute span. Lots of action on the game it seems.
IIRC Maryland was a road dog vs. Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and OSU and won all 4 games within the last few weeks. Apparently, odds makers don't believe they're legit.
Well Purdue won't play a zone by name, but no doubt will want to stop penetration but very cautious of the three ball. Would love for most of the game played at a slower pace only running when an advantage. Can't forget the perimeter three ball40 year Terps hoops fan here. First time I can remember in a long time that Maryland hasn't played a ranked opponent until February. Today's Purdue game is the first ranked opponent this season for the Terps. Our place is tough to play, weekend game, students back from break, full house, loud, yada yada yada. But Painter has had his way with Turge, including last year and dating back to Turge's A&M days when Painter took him down in the NCAA round of 32. Our OOC schedule is incredibly soft by design, since Turge viewed this as a rebuild year after losing four starters. Our B1G schedule is backloaded with the top conference teams this year -- before today, no games yet versus Purdue, Wisky, Northwestern. Moreover, we only play those three teams once this regular season as a favorable but unfair quirk of the unbalanced schedule.
You guys will own the paint today with Swanigan and your other bigs, since our bigs are very average, especially on offense. Our best forward is a frosh, Justin Jackson, who is barely 6-8. I think we matchup better in the back court with more speed and depth than your guards, but that won't matter if we're not hitting our 3s and if that happens, Painter would be wise to zone us. Painter is sure to clog the lane for Melo, who actually hasn't been penetrating until late in close games. Our frosh point Cowan is thin but tough, yet he still can get pushed around easily when he drives the lane. So if we're off from the 3 ball line and blocked from penetrating, then we're not getting to the line and that spells trouble for my Terps.
I don't think either team wins big today, and I think it stays close most of the way with Purdue winning by 6.

If the refs protect the dribble no matter what the dribble is doing an advantage to Maryland. When Purdue went to Nebraska there were two refs I haven't seen in the big and they were horrible. Two different teams.
What is the perception of a foul by the refs will play a role as well
Nothing major issues with refs so far. Couple continuationso, borderline moving screens, but nothing absurd compared to a few games this yearVery well said and true. Melo was getting every dribble drive called for him two years ago -- with many of them absurd calls. Last year it swung back well past middle. This year it's kinda moot since Melo isn't driving as much, now playing the two.
But I see Brian Dorsey doing the game, an ACC ref who has done plenty of Maryland games dating back many years. That will be interesting.
Dang it! We didn't cover the spread.Nothing major issues with refs so far. Couple continuationso, borderline moving screens, but nothing absurd compared to a few games this year
Purdue again has devoted too much attention to Melo, not enough patience on O to move the ball. Purdue has not played particularly well and Still in it. Should be a good half.
