Would Painter do this

Whatever it takes. Obviously it made an impression on this particular recruit. Some kids would care about this others wouldn't. I've said before, recruiting is a skill. Some coaches are better at it than others. It is a skill that CMP needs to get better at. I think he is and we will really see with the 2018 class.

Part of recruiting is reading a kid and knowing what is important to him. I don't think that we were even after this kid but if we were I hope that CMP and his staff would be in tune with what was important to him and recruit accordingly.

Agree. You gotta do whatever it takes as long it's within the rules.
IMHO, even more important than the head coach is the asst coach who is head recruiter.

I've been hearing about "how talented" Illinois incoming recruits are for the last decade. They've been to 3 NCAA tournaments in the last 10 years.

Since it isn't Purdue....I am sure you are probably impressed with 3 NCAA appearances in the last 10 years for Illinois.
How many of the 2017 committed to Gross, rather than Underwood? Didn't Underwood lose Tilmon after he committed to Gross?

What Underwood did just strikes me as normal recruiting. I was much more impressed by Chris Collins flying in Jon Scheier when he was recruiting Bryant McIntosh or even Painter having cow's tongue served to Felipe Haase. Delivering a cake doesn't strike me as anything extraordinary at all.

I'm impressed with who Brad Underwood is getting to commit to Illinois two-and-a-half months into his job there compared to the class Painter has coming in, 12 years and two-and-a-half months into his job as HC.

I like the potential of some of the newcomers for this coming season but the bottom line is that Painter and staff should be doing a better job recruiting, especially due to the overall winning percentage that Purdue has had (more times on TV, more exposure during the NCAA Tournament, etc.) during Painter's tenure. Sasha Stefanovic (who I'm sure is a good kid with a good work ethic) shouldn't be someone that Painter's staff even considers offering at this point in his tenure. The staff should be able to offer players that all happen to be more naturally talented than him at this stage.

I will agree that CMP should recruit better. However he has improved. As evidence of that the 2014 class +1 just won the B1G.

While I agree SS might not be talented enough, I think there is NO danger in offering him and him subsequently taking a spot on the team. CMP will likely know in 2 years --he either shows promise and earns PT, or he does not.....and if not, likely will be onto another school to get that PT....no harm(similar to GW). If he does improve & end up like DM or at worst Cline. Well that is ok too, even better, and that resultant shooting will be a needed part of good future teams. After all, for him to get PT he will compete likely with players the caliber of Eastern, Wheeler, maybe Carmody or Hunter....so if he improves enough to get PT - he will have to end up & get to a point where he will be pretty decent.

If you don't think Stefanovic is good enough, what do you think of Underwood offering Greg Eboigbodin?

I really think that the key to Altork's commitment is that Iliinois only had 8 players under scholarship. I think that Underwood is a solid coach, but it remains to be seen what he will accomplish at Illinois.

Come back in 12 1/2 years and compare their resumes. I doubt Underwood survives that long at IL.

I don't know anything about Greg Eboigbodin but I do know that Underwood has been recruiting at Illinois for two-and-a-half months while Painter's had 12 years longer at his school but he continues to struggle to bring in top 10-25 range classes on an annual basis.

Underwood is a great recruiter.
What are your thoughts about a guy he just signed who is ranked 450?
Meh I don't pay attention to details.

I get what you're saying. You're criticizing Painter because the guys that are committing are the result of him recruiting them since first grade and he clearly didn't do a good job of assessing talent when they were only 7 years old. I mean what else has he been doing for 12 years?

Most often, I wouldn't be excited about a high-major coach doing that. The players rated in the 250 to 300+ range (if rated at all) that can make a significant impact at a high DI program are few and far between.

I think Chris Kramer might have been considered that far down in ratings. There are also some guys that get overlooked and don't get rated at all and do manage to make a name for themselves in college (could be wrong, but I believe Cleanthony Early of Wichita State was an unrated or "lowly" ranked player out of HS.

However, guys like those two are clearly exceptions and definitely not the rule when it comes to recruiting rankings for HS players.

You missed the point.

You're ranting and raving about Underwood's recruiting success in 2.5 months. Everyone brings up a guy he signed that is ranked around 450 and you admit you don't know who he is.

Just showing you have no idea what you are talking point.

not really

The unknown is one out of FIVE players that are committed to Illinois for 2017. Three of those five players (Mark Smith, Mark Alstork, Greg Eboigbodin) committed after Brad Underwood took over as head coach. He's gotten two commits from guys that should be immediate impact players after just two and a half months on the job (to go along with previous commits Trent Frazier and Da'Monte Williams). Nojel Eastern and Aaron Wheeler should be immediate impact players for Purdue next season. After that, it's more difficult to tell with Eden Ewing and Matt Haarms and it's unlikely that Sasha Stefanovic will be playing significant minutes (if, at all) next season. Underwood's staff is recruiting at about the same level as Painter's staff and they just got there!

It's not that hard for a new staff to recruit well. They can promise the world and there's not yet any evidence in their new position to refute whatever they tell recruits.

Eboigbodin was offered. He hasn't committed. You are more excited about that kid than anyone Illinois fan.

Based on your loving embrace of everything Illinois and Underwood I guess we might as well call the BTN Corp offices and forfeit now so we can save ourselves the embarrassment.

Might as well call in our vote for Underwood as COY and every player for 1st Team all everything.

lol, good one

I already told you that I didn't know anything about Eboigbodin until you brought it up.

For several years you have been telling us that your role on this board is to affect change to the Purdue basketball program so that they go to a Final Four. Based on results, how's your performance?

...because of his other commits for this class. I've mentioned this already. This is ironic, coming from you.
He's got one 2017 commitment and he lost another very highly rated recruit to Missouri. He has one transfer commitment and he lost multiple players to transfers. He still has 4 open scholarships for next season that he hasn't been able to fill. He just offered the 450th ranked player in the 2017 class. He's doing ok, but I don't get the raving about his accomplishments thus far.

As TC4THREE suggests - when you have a team with few starters and fewer subs, you can offer and deliver playing time. If only CMP had done a horrible, awful, embarrassing job of recruiting, we too could offer lots of PT ... alas, CMP has not done a horrible, awful, embarrassing job of recruiting recently; therefore, we cannot offer immediate PT. The FUN part is you get to complain about it either way because you must dig until you find something negative about our program so you can finally feed on it and live another day.

Nag takes every opportunity he can to try and use anything and everything against CMP. That is the only reason he posts here and isn't even going to change.

Funny thing is, he isn't even trying to hide anymore. Next he'll start making posts blaming natural disasters happening around the world because CMP doesn't play a zone.
