JUST look at their recruiting on rivals. All 2 stars a few 3 stars. Just like us. I do not see a recruiting advantage that he brings to the table.

Please God tell me you understand the difference in recruiting to the MAC and recruiting to the B10. His recruiting for where he coaches now is pretty good.
HIs recruiting at WMU is aided by less than tough academic requirements. Academics are more of a pre-requisite at West Laffy which would hamper his ability to bring in those stellar two star recruits he's bringing in to Western. I'm not the least bit impressed by "just another MAC coach".

I don't know who is a better coach, but Hazell's resume at the time of his hire is better than Fleck's.

Actually, I dropped Fleck in my wish list. I got Brohm, Calhoun, Fleck. I think Brohm will flip PU quicker, we don't get the kind of linemen needed for Fleck;s O, with a passing attack, can get away w/ less proven linemen just recruit speed and QB's. Look at psu this year w/ the addition of Morehead's spread O, they are a helluva lot better. Also would probably keep CJ Hayes here.

Can you elaborate on this? Fleck's HC experience >>>> Hazell. Fleck recruited the team he's coaching and they've gone from 1-11 to undefeated in that timeframe.

I get the concern over the MAC background but it's not fair to call him Hazell 2.0. The question is how much better he is.

Hazell made his run with a team he inherited. Look at the drop off for Kent State after those players left and it was just Hazell's players. Fleck inherited a horrible team, built it up and after 4 years is making the run with primarily all his players.

Hazell can apparently coach a team primed for a run, he can't build or sustain, of course that Kent State team might've put together that season with pretty much anyone at the helm aside from John Shoop. Fleck has shown he can build a team.

Hazell - age 52

1986–1987 Oberlin (RB)
1988 Eastern Illinois (RB/WR)
1989–1991 Oberlin (OC)
1992–1994 Penn (RB)
1995–1996 Western Michigan (WR)
1997–1998 Army (WR/TE)
1999–2000 West Virginia (RB)
2001–2002 Rutgers (WR)
2003 Rutgers (AHC)
2004 Ohio State (WR/KR)
2005–2010 Ohio State (AHC/WR)
2011–2012 Kent State
2013–2016 Purdue

Fleck - age 35

2006 Ohio State (GA)
2007–2008 Northern Illinois (WR)
2009 Northern Illinois (WR/RC)
2010–2011 Rutgers (WR)
2012 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (WR)
2013–present Western Michigan

Hazell was on the OSU staff for 7 years including Associate Head Coach for 6 years plus 2 years head coaching experience. Fleck has never been more than a WR coach beyond his current head coaching gig. Just saying that his resume is not any better than Hazell. It doesn't mean he won't be a good coach.

Fleck would have you competing for a Big Ten West title within year 3. Him and Hazell cant even be compared, not even in the same class. Fleck is top notch in everything he does, on and off the field. I believe its Purdue's best option for success, just my Western Michigan Bronco opinion.

Hazell tried to bring that Tressell style of coaching over to Purdue and didn't translate at all. Admittedly, I thought the pedigree would benefit our program especially after some of Hope's antics, but reality is he was a bad fit here and in over his head in general. At least with Fleck, you've see him build his resume as a HC from the ground up at WMU. Hazell just took a well built roster and made them competitive.

Thanks for input. Fleck is very impressive. What's your guess on where Fleck is coaching next year?

BoilerBF,

The word around town is WMU boosters and the university are putting together a compensation package of 1.5-2 million( currently is the highest paid coach in the MAC by a long shot at 800,000/yr) a year for 2 years, all guaranteed to try to keep him for a little longer. Will that work in retaining him? I honestly don't think so but he certainly loves this place and his wife's family is from here, so who knows. Purdue could obviously out pay Western Michigan but I think the key is getting the job done quickly before some big boy jobs open up. If Oregon offers there is NO way he turns that down. Nike, the Facilities they have and Eugene as a college town is one of the best I have been to, that game day atmosphere is just electric ! If there is one thing Purdue has in its favor like you mentioned he loves rebuilding things.

When I was at WMU we had some pretty good football teams and went to three bowl games in five years but this is on a whole different level. If I had to put my money on a destination of where Fleck winds up its Oregon but I want to see him stay in the Midwest therefore I'm hoping for Purdue if he does leave.

I hope he stays at WMU so bad but that's unlikely to happen and if you have any doubts about him being at Purdue watch his press conference and I promise you wont at the end of this. He is going to be big time wherever he goes after WMU

It's hard to predict future success in such situations. Especially with such a short track-record of success. I remember an EKU reporter used to frequent these boards after Danny Hope was hired, and similarly guaranteed championships sooner rather than later. Unfortunately for us that wasn't to be.

Purdue swung for the fences once already and struck out with Hazell. Seemingly they want to take that chance once again with PJ Fleck. I hope it works, as a Purdue fan, but looking at it objectively, Purdue should hire someone with a track record of successful rebuilds (Craig Bohl, Matt Rhule, Montgomery, et al) or success as an innovative P5 coordinator (Aranda, Riley, et al).

How is going from 1-11 to undefeated not a successful rebuild?

Who is your first choice? And what successful P5 coach doesn't have a huge ego?
First of all, Fleck isn't a P5 coach...never has been. Secondly, I've been very forthcoming in my support of Miles, who may have that ego, but he's earned it. Unlike Fleck, he's been that P5 coach who's backed it up with a National title and who I believe could come in running. But, it appears as if MB2 has other ideas and will risk PU's future with an unproven. Hope I'm wrong.

So you have it on good authority MB2 hasn't contacted Miles? I'd be happy with Miles and MB2 would have to be an idiot to not reach out to him. But either his price is too high or he's clear that we aren't what he's looking for. I believe if Miles really wanted to coach Purdue, we've had signed him by now.

I think MB2 has moved on.

Where did I say "MB2 hasn't contacted Miles?" And I've said he should have been hired immediately and put on the recruiting trail.

Rumor is that Fleck would much prefer to stay in Midwest for now due to his children. You hearing that at all? Oregon is a long long way away...
Also not convinced Fleck is Oregon's first choice

Devil's Advocate: and IU fans were convinced Brad would be their next coach because he'd not leave the state due to his wife's career. Money talks, I guess. Not saying he'd have ever taken that job though. ;)

True.. However Fleck situation is a little different... He's divorced and they have three kids together
