Wisconsin at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Today, the #16-ranked Wisconsin Badgers (19-5; 9-4) visit Mackey Arena to take on the #7-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (19-6; 11-3) in a key conference clash. Tip is scheduled for approximately 1:00 pm (Eastern time) with television coverage on CBS. This is the only regular season match-up between the teams.

Projected Starting Line-ups:

Wisconsin - Nolan Winter, Steven Crowl, John Blackwell, Max Klesmit, and John Tonje

Purdue - Trey Kaufman-Renn, Caleb Furst, CJ Cox, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith

Wisconsin has won four of its last five games and eight of ten overall. The Badgers overcame a two-point halftime deficit at Iowa over the weekend, outscoring the Hawkeyes 37-24 in the second half. Both teams shot under 40 percent, but Wisconsin added 14 points at the FT line - where they lead the NCAA at 84.1% overall, which is outstanding.

Senior guard John Tonje paces the Badgers in scoring, averaging 18.6 points with 4.8 rebounds per game. Purdue will also focus on sophomore guard John Blackwell (15.3 PPG and 4.7 RPG), who has an inside-outside game, senior guard Max Klesmit (10.1 PPG and 2.9 APG) and sophomore forward Nolan Winter (10.0 PPG and 5.7 RPG), who has emerged as a significant threat from long-range.

Wisconsin is 11th overall in the KenPom ratings, 10th in offensive efficiency and 35th in defensive efficiency. The Badgers are around average in pace at 1834th in adjusted tempo. The Badgers score 81.0 points per game (36th) on 46.0 percent shooting (114th), while their opponents average 70.0 points per game (129th) with a 41.3 field goal percentage (67th).

Purdue is currently 8th overall in KenPom ratings, 8th offensively and 29th defensively. The Boilers still have a much slower pace than most teams at 269th in adjusted tempo.

These are two very evenly matched teams and two of the better offenses in the country, both capable of scoring in bunches when their shooting gets hot. Wisconsin is balanced inside/outside and maybe has a few more consistent threats from long-range. Purdue also cannot afford its front line to get in foul trouble again, as Wisconsin is more than capable of taking advantage in the paint and hitting the offensive glass.

Look for Purdue to have a concentrated focus on Tonje and Blackwell, but Matt Painter also knows that Klesmit is very capable of having a big game. Also Crowl can hurt them, along with Winter. Purdue will have to force them into tough shots and be on point with its rotations, or this could be a disappointing afternoon for the Boilers.

On offense, Purdue must execute very well and also make a better percentage from long-range than in recent contests. They have generally been pretty solid with turnovers, and in a closely matched game, it's even more paramount. Plus, Wisconsin is capable of making runs with transition opportunities.

Some thoughts from Coach Matt Painter on the Wisconsin match up:

"One of the best offenses in the country.....to go along with a really good defense.....good coach......experience, not just in years but together.....They have a skilled team......make 10 threes a game, they can drive the basketball. They're not the kind of team that just sits out there and wants threes.....they're not going to hunt for them unless you're going to give it to them. You gotta really break their rhythm."

"So that is a big key for us. If you allow them to get in transition, you allow them to freely move the basketball.....they will eventually get you......and they've also had the ability to just take somebody out right off the get go....."

"Defensively, they are well schooled....they're in position......they get into the basketball; they make it tough for you to score off of cuts.....they bottle up the paint. They have active hands. They have guys with experience that understand rotations."

On the critical match-up with Tonje and Blackwell:

"Both can shoot it, so they make you get up on them to break their rhythm, but then they're good at driving and getting to the rim. Tonje is fabulous at getting to the FT line.......you gotta make both of those guys make tough shots."

On his team after the Michigan loss and also some shooting struggles:

"You just have to push on. It's part of competition, and you have to move on. Watch tape, be honest about it, and that's how you correct things. We have to have better concentration on defense. The other night [at Michigan], we allowed the officials to be part of the game because our defensive concentration wasn't good......You gotta be above it and play better."

"I'm process based - not results based, because the right process will get you better results.....you just gotta keep putting in the work.....be efficient......but they gotta feel good about themselves and have that belief..."

On Braden Smith and what he saw in recruiting him -

"Very high level instincts.....on both sides of the ball...."

This is a critical game for both teams to be in contention for the conference championship. Expect a battle for 40 minutes. Can the Boilers get back on track after a tough loss on the road earlier in the week?

We shall see, coming up in a little over an hour.

Boiler up, my friends.

Is it sad everytime I see basically anyone on our bench handling the ball or defending the guy with the ball, all I can do is cringe.

Our offense sure looks easy to stop at times, and Wisconsin's looks like a well oiled machine

I think last year the Edey centric offense didn’t miss a beat when the bench came in, if anything it made it easier for them to get open.

We bring in the bench now and the flow is just completely off
