Why are you a Purdue fan? Why did you pick Purdue over IU & all the rest?

I'm a life long Purdue fan, & resident of the Hoosier state. I chose Purdue over IU & all the rest because:

1. I'm superstitious, red is my least favorite color, & I've always liked the gold & black colors of Purdue & the Pitsburgh Pirates [& now a triple A affiliate of our Indianapolis Indians], as well as the silver & black of the Oakland Raiders.

2. I like underdogs, & in this state, compared to IU, Purdue is the underdog.

3. When I was young, growing up in central Indiana, if you were into college sports, you saw, read & heard [through the media] a lot about IU, Purdue & ND football & basketball. WTTV, ch. 4, [host] Chuck Marlow, & the Farm Bureau Insurance Network [back in the 70's] would carry [some] IU & Purdue basketball games. My dad was an IU, & Bob Knight fan, I was a Purdue fan, & we'd bet on the IU-Purdue games. Made the games a little more interesting.

4. It's more difficult to support a constant loser, & Purdue has had some fairly successfull teams in the past, especially basketball.

Just curious about the exact year it started, but didn't the Farm Bureau Insurance Network, through WTTV, Channel 4, [Indianapolis-Bloomington/central IN. area] start carrying the IU & Purdue games [& I believe some Indiana Pacer games?] about 1972? The Indiana Pacers were also a great entertainment value for me as a young child as well, many exciting nights watching them on ch. 4, as they won about 3 ABA championships [even though, I don't believe any of the championships were carried on ch. 4?], & always seemed extreemly entertaining & fun to watch. Watching Bobby "Slick" Leonard coach [& usually win with our Pacers] was a real treat to watch as well. Slick is, was, & always will be a real class individual, in every way.

Purdue family - three generations of Purdue grads have tallied 7 total Purdue graduates in our family. Thus, we grew up watching Purdue basketball win big together as a family.

As far as iu and the rest.....they are meaningless to the success of Purdue, so they just don't matter.

I was an IU fan until I met JBC in 78 on a visit to Purdue as a 12 year old. I could also see the hypocrisy of subway alums and bandwagon fans who rooted for IU in basketball and Notre Dane in football. It seemed silly to me and I have very since then seen IU fans who didn't attend the university as bandwagon fans.

I too like an underdog and I liked the hard working mindset that Purdue exemplified.

...and yes I am not a fan of the color red.

My first PU football game and earliest exposure to Purdue was in 1967 against ND when I was 7. Mike Phipps and Leroy Keyes led the Boilers to the win over the hated Irish.

In the area I grew up, if you went to college, you went to Purdue for Ag or Engineering and rooted for Purdue. If you didn't go to college, you rooted for IU.

Process of natural selection.

I have always been grateful that my Dad was a Purdue grad.I became a Purdue fan because of him.I grew up in Indy and I don't recall them broadcasting Pacer games on Chanell 4.But maybe they did and I just don't recall it.

Degree in Math & Comp Sci from Purdue, minors in History and Physics. Who else would I root for?

Kids went to Michigan and MSU, but they are on their own!

Why Purdue and not IU?

1. I have all my teeth
2. I don't live in a trailer
3. I actually WENT to college
4. My sister doesn't interest me ...... romantically.
5. My family tree has many branches to it and not just one
6. When I reverse my jacket, it still says Purdue and not some other college
7. I have bigger career aspirations than working at McDonalds

Okay .. okay .. so all joking aside, my entire bloodline went to Purdue dating back for as long as I can remember. I also grew up in South Bend so got to see the reversible jacket/subway-alumns give my family grief "in jest" when Purdue lost to either IU/ND first hand, so that only reinforced my Boiler blood.

Now here is the kicker, my life long friend, who I consider to be like a brother to me, is an IU grad. We often will be seen out together wearing Purdue/IU stuff and shock people that we are so close. And what makes him unique you might ask? He is like me and doesn't take the sporting events seriously and best part ..... he hates ND as much as I do.

My childhood, hometown hero was former Purdue player, Drake Morris. His high school played in the Indiana semi-state finals at Mackey Arena. While attending the semi-final games I saw the Purdue campus and Mackey Arena. Then when he chose to play for Purdue, I came an instant fan. Then, when it was time for me to pick a college, I only applied at Purdue; luckily I got accepted by the way. Then, I enjoyed first hand watching the Troy Lewis, Everette Stephens, Todd Mitchell era. The Big Ten was so competitive in those years.

My dad was an IU fan. Howver, I never gave IU a second look. I never cared much for the school or the teams. My hate did not start until I went to Purdue. I am a casual fan of Notre Dame until they play the Boilers in something of course. I was born, raised, and currently live in northwest Indiana and we are in the Chicago television viewing area. The way Chicago covers Notre Dame, if you did not know any better you would think Notre Dame is in Chicago. The sports newscast will lead with Notre Dame football highlights before U of I or even Northwestern from the north suburbs. That may be the reason I can tolerate Notre Dame compared to other Purdue fans.

1. Those sweet gold unis they wore back in the 80s during national TV games.

2. I noticed that, as a 5 year old, I was more mature than IU's coach.

3. Both parents, 1 grandparent, as well as my wife and I are all Purdue grads.

4. Mackey is a way better venue than Ass. Hall.

5. The Three Amigos

6. Southern Indiana

7. Steve Alford's center-part, feathered back 80s hair.

When I entered Purdue I was a 17-year-old kid. When I left at 21 I can't say that I was a man yet, but I was a lot closer to it! Lots of growing up during those years - lots of great memories. Went to Penn State after that, then to Wisconsin, and got my first job as a professor at USC. Through the years in State College, Madison, and LA, I was always a Purdue fan. (Well, I did root for the Badgers in hockey.)

I'm not saying Ch. 4 [as WTTV] carred every game, but yes, they [I believe it was early to mid 70's] carried some Pacer games. Not non Pacer ABA games, just Pacers playing other ABA teams. I don't think it was sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance, [but could have been?] but I'm 90% sure ch. 4 carried [some] Pacer games back then. How old are you? If you were too young back then, you might not remember it. I believe ch. 4 also [back in the early to mid 70's] carried professional wrestling [WWF]. I think it was taped, & on Sat. morning? They also has Cowboy Bob & Janie [Frickie] on Sat. mornings [cartoons], I think? They had Sammy Terry on Sat. night, if I recall correctly? Back then, they carried many Cincinnatti Reds games, The 700 Club, with Bob Braun. Ch. 4 programming was quite different from all the other local stations, & was very successfull for a period up until the early 80's, then big changes came.

Hate to admit it now, but if my older brother hadn't entered PU in fall of 1972, I prob would not have followed suit 7 years later. However, what cemented the deal was attending the 1975 PU-Minny basketball game on campus. Actually got to sleep and eat in a dorm, see the smokestack for the first time...oh the memories! Incidentally, Purdue destroyed the Gophers with a 2nd half blitz. For those who remember, Mychal Thompson was just a frosh---three years removed from NCAA POY---and Bruce Parkinson set the Big 10 single game assist record (still standing?) with18 helpers.

I wanted an education.

Seriously, Purdue had a more highly rated science department. My dad didn't go to college, but he was always a Purdue fan. I didn't get caught up in it until I was on campus.

1. Born and raised in West Lafayette.
2. Father was Purdue faculty member from 1966 - 1988 in Krannert School.
3. Earliest childhood memories were made on Purdue campus.
4. Spent more time on Purdue campus during my first 20 years of life than probably anyone else other than an employee.
5. Impressed by Coach Keady's passion, professionalism, respect, and overall attitude towards collegiate basketball.
6. Disgust over Coach Knight's behavior, especially when things are going his way. I can never support a school or team that praises such behavior.

Go Purdue!

I am 63 and remember that Ch,4 carried Popeye on weekday afternoon from the late 1950s onward for many years. All Star Championship Wrestling was a ch,4 staple for many years, and Chuck Marlowe was the announcer for the matches for a long time ,and took a lot of abuse from the wrestling villians.I guess this prepared Chuck for his job as the host of the Bob Knight show.Sam Menacker started announcing the matches in the early 1970s and had more BS than anyone ever on TV except for Lee Corso. If you say the Pacers were on Channel 4,they probably were.I recall watching them on local tv in the ABA days.I was a big Pacer fan then, but I would only go see them now if someone else bought my ticket, drove me to the game, and bought my concessions.Sammy Terry was great, wasnt He?I know that Bob Carter passed a few years ago,but his son Mark occasionally dresses as Sammy and entertains locally. If they brought Sammy back on tv,I would watch him,but I don't think young people would care for him too much.We only had 4 stations in the Indy market in the pre cable era,but tv was just as good.
