Just a few of many reasons....

Took our programs from the dumps to respectability in about one season.
Put together what I feel was the best team in the country in 2009-2010 before losing one of our top players to an unfortunate injury.
Recruits players that mostly represent the university very well.
In cases of player discipline, he appears to me to be consistent and fair with the punishment.
Used leverage to force athletic department to loosen purse strings a bit.
Recovered from mistake in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 to get program back on track.
8 NCAA tournaments in the last 10 years.
Big Ten Championship.
Big Ten Tournament Championship.
2 Sweet Sixteens.
3 times Big Ten Coach of the Year.

I love that my coach isn't a freak show on the sidelines. He acts like the professional that he is (I'm looking at you Crean and Izzo).

He holds the players accountable on the court and off.

He treats the media and fellow coaches with respect.

Bump.[/QUOT

And to add to that thought, he's a grown ass man that doesn't phugging start crying in front of 17-18 year old recruits.

There's a lot to like about Coach Painter for sure. That being said, given his current salary, I think it's fair that a little heat is being thrown his way after the recent flame-outs in the tourney and the just-good-enough recruiting. Im still a Painter supporter at this point despite some of the struggles. Im going to see how this season goes and how he closes out the 2017 recruiting class before getting too rash with my judgements. He definitely has work to do but I think he can get there.

Overall, I think he's done a nice job in his first 11 years. And let's face it, he looks even better when you contrast him with the clown show going on across the street.

I will say tho, the next 12 months are going to be huge for him. 2017 class is going to be light, now he's got to go deep in the NCAAs then capitalize next summer with the 2018 class.

Yes. He also has averaged a conference record of 11-7 over the past 10 years.

that 2009 coulda/woulda team gets way too much credit. We probably would have flamed out in the NCAAT.
CMP is a very good coach.
F4 is not happening under him, ever!

His salary is fine for what he delivers. At worst, he is slightly overpaid. But he works hard for that money.

Hey Dumbass. I think you intended to post on the why I hate Painter thread.

Why the name-calling? I don't hate CMP. sorry. I just am not delusional about his ceiling. You will never find me among those who want him gone.

seriously though, how old are you? I am boilermaker to the core. BS, MS. That I don't share your delusions about Painter's celing after 11 years of solid evidence, doesn't make me a "freaking idiot". CMP is welcome to prove me wrong anytime!

Bullshit. You ignore the real facts that have been proven on here time and time again so yeah, it does make you a freakin idiot.

Izzo just cried out of guilt that he can barely suppress anymore because he knows that Jaren Jackson Jr.'s signing with State drastically increases the odds that he will one day be processed at Ingham County Jail.

what proven facts am I ignoring? that he hasn't ever come close to making a F4 in 11 years? Why should I suddenly believe he is capable?
You are a delusional idiot.

The thread is why I like CMP and you derailed it. There is a thread, or make that multiple threads, where you can express your displeasure with him. I will refrain from the name calling and just ask that you post your negative comments in those threads and leave this one alone.

Relax. There's another thread on the board for you haters.

I am not displeased with him. I don't dislike him. That other thread is not appropriate either. I jjust point out there's no basis for some of the super optimistic claims I am reading here.

Well thanks for trying to solve the problem of fans being too optimistic. You don't want to let that slide.

fine bring on the kool aid. Pour me a gallon. End of the day, i just want success for my boilers. There are lots of things I like about CMP (great basketball mind, hard worker, excellent game prep usually, outstanding identifier of talent and runs a clean program)

Thank you for doing that, there aren't enough of you realist on here. Without you coming into this thread we would have been left with our unrealistic expectations and hopes. Again, thanks.

Good post. I've tapered my optimism to a "wait and see" of sorts, but what you posted here is still true about CMP.

Plenty of coaches that have made the final four with out coming close before. Your imaginary ceiling is bs. It wouldn't be very easy to get a coach with a proven final four track record to replace Painter and I can think of a few coaches that have final four experience that would be clear downgrades from painter.

I don't think Painter hasn't had any final four capable teams make it intact into the tournament. He's had some that were probably one star player away, and that can be blamed somewhat on recruiting and some on bad luck. Anyway you don't fire a coach just because they aren't meeting your (mostly delusional) expectations, you only replace them if you have a clearly superior replacement.

The ceiling reference is just an analogy.
It's not meant to represent an actual physical barrier that's constructed above CMP's head.
I mean if a real physical ceiling , you know constructed of 2x4s and drywall ,were a detriment to coaching success then it would affect all coaches.
Clearly that is not the case, so don't get fixated on a ceiling to CMP's success.
I say that Painter's limitations are mostly self inflicted .
He could correct them if he were able to recognize them and be willing to correct them.
I'm still waiting, 11 years and counting, to see those changes.
